Exhibition: West Kelowna 5 Vernon 4

I was at tonight's exhibition game as West Kelowna defeated Vernon 5-4 at Royal le Page Place.

Starting Goaltenders:

Vernon:  Austin Smith
West Kelowna:  Steven Myland

1st Period:  The Warriors would get the games first powerplay early, recording just two shots on goal with not alot of sustained pressure the Vipers were able to kill off the man advantage.  Not long after Vernon would get their first powerplay and capitalize after Brendan Persley setup Jason Bird who ripped a hard high shot that beat Steven Myland going crossbar and in giving the Vipers the early 1-0 lead at 4:09 Persley with the lone assist.  A very rough and physical game with both teams hitting, laying out some good hard checks.  Josh Bryan would drop the gloves with Warriors captain Matt Anholt as both players were tossed from the game.  The Vipers slowly started to get rolling and after being outshot 3-0 early and needing almost three minutes to record their first shot on goal were now outshooting the Warriors 5-3 and again later on 8-5 as Vernon was carrying the edge in play.  Shortly after a mini scrum formed in front of the West Kelowna goal as TJ Dumonceaux was mixing it up right in the middle of the pushing and shoving as the Vipers come out of the scrum with their second powerplay of the night.  Vernon couldnt get much going as West Kelowna was able to kill off the penalty.  Just after another mini altercation broke loose again in the Warriors zone as more pushing and shoving occured.  Tempers were really heating up as both teams were showing alot of anger and frustration towards one another.  The Vipers come out with a third powerplay, this time it was the Warriors who would get a great chance on a parcial three on two bt Austin Smith made a nice save as Vernon struggled with the man advantage.  The Warriors would kill off the penalty.  Late in the period another mini scrum broke out but this time in front of the Vernon net.  Several players throwing punches as West Kelowna come out of the melay with a five minute powerplay.  Mark Hamilton was tossed from the contest after given five minutes for crosschecking.  Vernon was now down to just four defencemen.  With both teams four on four to start the Warriors would eventually get the man advantage going.  Adam Plant with a long dump in from the neutral zone took a funny bounce off the end glass-boards coming right out front where Ambrose Firkus hit the empty cage and a diving Austin Smith who was caught out of position as West Kelowna tied the game 1-1 at 15:02 Plant with the only helper.  The Vipers would kill off the remainder of the five minute major.  Just as the penalty expired Brendan Persley took the puck from centre going in for the breakaway but couldnt beat Steven Myland with two and a half minutes remaining on a great chance.  Not alot of great chances for either team as Vernon had a slight edge in play.  At the buzzer Braxton Bilous and Brendan Persley dropped the gloves as both players were tossed from the game.  It was 1-1 after 20 minutes of play.  Shots were even 13-13.

2nd Period:  Just thirty six seconds into the middle frame TJ Dumonceaux stepped over centre and wired a hard slap shot from just inside the West Kelowna blueline that beat Steven Myland but went off the post.  Dumonceaux with a ton of hustle gathered up the rebound and tried beating Myland down low on a second opportunity as Vernon with two good chances in the opening few seconds.  On the same play Taylor Graham setup Brennan Clark who was able to walk in from the slot and beat Austin Smith fivehole giving West Kelowna a 2-1 lead just fifty seven seconds into the 2nd Graham with the lone assist.  Not alot of room for either team as far as offence goes as both teams were playing a very physical, tight checking game.  Vernon would tie the game at 6:03 after Dexter Dancs setup Liam Coughlin in front who beat Myland on a nice play in front.  Dancs and Michael Statchuk collected the assists.  This is where the wheels sorta fell off as shortly after West Kelowna turned it up a notch and slowly took over the play.  The Warriors with some good pressure had three real good scoring chances.  Taylor Graham from the slot beat Smith but hit the post.  Morgan Johnston and Carl Hesler both had real good opportunities in close but couldnt beat Austin Smith.  The Vipers defence started running around and got caught on a few plays leaving a few West Kelowna players open and it cost them.  Ambrose Firkus went high on Smith at 9:47 giving West Kelowna a 3-2 lead, Mac Ferner with the assist.  Just under two minutes later Liam Blackburn on a parcial two on one beat Smith at 11:31 giving the Warriors a two goal lead.  David Pope and Brennan Clark with the assists.  The Vipers couldnt get much offence going as West Kelowna was outplaying Vernon at this point.  The next four or five minutes there wasnt much action at all as both teams just moving the puck with not alot of room.  Both teams went several minutes without a shot on goal.  Late in the period TJ Dumonceaux setup Logan Mick who got the Vipers to within a goal at 19:31 on a two on one.  Dumonceaux with the assist on a nice pass.  The Warriors with three in the second grabbed a 4-3 lead after 40 minutes of play as the Warriors were the better of the two teams in the middle frame.  West Kelowna outshot Vernon 11-7.

3rd Period:  The Vipers come out ready to go for the final period getting some good pressure early creating and generating a few real good quality chances.  Just three minutes into the third Liam Coughlin setup Jason Bird who jumped up into the rush on a two on one just hit the bottom of the post on a great chance to tie the game.  Just a shift or two later Colton Sparrow broke free from his man for the breakaway but was stopped in close by Warriors starting goaltender Steven Myland.  The Vipers with all kinds of pressure and quality chances couldnt tie the game.  West Kelowna without a shot in the first four minues of action.  Vernon would get a two man advantage and capitalize on the second powerplay tying the game.  With some good pressure and puck movement the Vipers with a hard working shift allowed Michael McNicholas with a nice pass setup Jason Bird for his second of the night at 8:55 McNicholas and Mason Blacklock with the assists.  But shortly after the Vipers would get into some penalty trouble.  West Kelowna with a shot with the powerplay didnt generate much offence as Vernon's penalty kill was pretty good killing off the minor.  Once again the Vipers would take another powerplay, this time the Warriors with a double man advantage.  But another strong penalty kill by the Vipers as Vernon would excape with the game still tied 4-4.  West Kelowna would get a late powerplay, Brennan Clark was stopped on a great chance in front before seconds later Ambrose Firkus went high beating Smith for his third goal of the night giving the Warriors the 5-4 lead at 16:28 David Pope with the assist.  The Vipers would get Austin Smith to the bench for the extra attacker with 1:30 remaining but would take a penalty sending Smith back to the crease.  With Vernon shorthanded it was the Vipers with all kinds of pressure and forecheck as the Vipers with two good chances down low couldnt convert.  With under a minute left Dallas Calvin with a nice indvidual pass setup Craig Martin on a two on one but Martin was robbed by Myland at the side of the net.  The Vipers with all kinds of pressure late couldnt find the back of the net for a wild finish as West Kelowna would sweep the home and home series with a 5-4 victory.

Top Players:  (Vernon)

Kenny Citron I thought played a heck of a first and second period until getting into penalty trouble in the third.  With the Vipers down to just four d-men Citron played very strong in the first two periods.  Was playing physical, jumping up into the play & blocking shots.

Liam Coughlin (1 goal)  Playing in just his second game with the Vipers had a strong game up front tonight.  This kid can skate, puck handle and read the ice well.  I think Coughlin is going to be a real play maker with the Vipers.

TJ Dumonceaux (1 assist)  Was this kid flying all night.  Played with a ton of jump, was showing alot of hustle, speed and determination all game long.  Dumonceaux played a heck of a game, was hitting, battling down low, working hard and giving it his all all night.

Colton Sparrow played a heck of a game for the second night in a row.  I thought Sparrow was one of the better Vipers this weekend.  Another kid that showed alot of hustled, battled hard, worked hard and played with alot of jump.

Game Thoughts:  (Vernon)

I thought the Vipers played well but struggled in different areas tonight.  Vernon didnt get as many offensive chances as they did last night in a tight checking, physical game tonight with not lot of room out there.  I thought in the 2nd period especially the Vipers left a few players open and it cost them giving up two quick back to back goals.  I was very pleased with the penalty kill, I thought other then giving up two goals Vernon was very good with the penalty kill tonight.  Give the Vipers credit they were down by two and battled back.  They battled, competed and fought very hard in the 3rd but just couldnt come up with the game tying goal on a few real good chances late shorthanded.  They also played with just four d-men after losing Josh Bryan and Mark Hamilton.  With the loss the Vipers finished the pre-season with a 2-3 record will open the regular season next Saturday vs Surrey at the BCHL Showcase.

Top Players:  (West Kelowna)

Ben Tegtmeyer I thought was the Warriors best defenceman tonight.  Jumped up into the play, was involved in the play, got some quick shots off from the point and overall was very solid on the blueline.

Adam Plant (1 assist)  Also played very well on the backend.

Carl Hesler played well up front for West Kelowna.  This kid was hustling all night, involved in the play and had a good chance in the 2nd.

Ambrose Firkus (3 goals)  Had a very strong game.  Was really skating, seemed like everything he through at the net went in.  Two real nice goals and had an easy empty netter on the game tying goal on the lucky bounce off the end wall-glass.

Brennan Clark (1 goal & 1 assist) also played very well.  Was involved in the play, made some nice plays to creat and generate chances.

Steven Myland played very well between the pipes making some big saves at key times through out the game.

Game Thoughts:  (West Kelowna)

A very physical game that could have gotten out of hand after a wild first period with atleast three scrums and two fights.  Overall both teams with not alot of chances in a very tight checking game.  Not alot of room for either team to get moving out there.  Overall I thought both teams outplayed each other at times or for a period or so but both teams were pretty even through out the entire game.  Both teams battled, competed and worked hard all night in a game with alot of emotion and intensity.  With the win the Warriors finish the pre-season at 2-1-1.

Exhibition: West Kelowna 3 Vernon 1

I was at tonight's exhibition game as West Kelowna defeated Vernon 3-1 at Kal Tire Place.

Starting Goaltenders:

Vernon:  Danny Todosychuk
West Kelowna:  Andy Desautels

1st Period:  The Vipers come out strong off the opening whitsle, just over a minute into the frame Michael McNicholas with a shot from in the slot was stopped by Warriors starting goaltender Andy Desautels before Desautels stopped Mason Blacklock at the side of the net on the rebound as Vernon with two good chances early.  The Vipers with lots of jump, skating hard and moving the puck well carried the play early and often before the Warriors would open the scoring on there first shot on goal.  Will Perterson setup Captain Matt Anholt in front who beat Vipers starting goaltender Danny Todosychuk at 4:20 Petereson and Liam Blackburn collected the assists.  The Vipers come right back and again controlled the edge in play.  Liam Coughlin made his Vipers debut tonight with a nice individual effort in the slot was stopped in close on the backhand by Andy Desautels.  Vernon carried the play in the first half and was the better of the two teams.  In the second half TJ Dumonceaux with a hard working shift showed his speed by winning the battle for the loose puck before ripping a hard shot from just inside the West Kelowna blueline but Desautels made a nice save just getting a peice of the puck with his goal stick back the other way David Pope lead the way getting a good chance in front but was stopped by Todosychuk.  The Vipers would get a late powerplay but with just one shot on goal couldnt get much pressure as the Warriors would kill off the penalty.  West Kelowna would finally get their legs going and turn things around as the Warriors with some pressure late come back with several shots, creating and generating some chances in the final four or five minutes.  West Kelowna with a strong finish was outplayed for most of the period.  The Warriors with a 1-0 lead after 20 minutes of play.  West Kelowna outshot Vernon 11-10.

2nd Period:  The Warriors started the middle frame right from where they left off the final few minutes of the 1st.  West Kelowna with a good start to the 2nd period come out with lots of pressure.  The Warriors who battled hard and competed in the battles down low and in front were right on top of Vernon winning all the battles.  The Vipers who quit skating were back on their heels as West Kelowna had Vernon pinned in their own end as it was all Warriors early.  Connor Bucsis with a chance at the side of the net tried to go high on Danny Todosychuk but the third year Viper was there to make a quick glove save.  The Warriors would get their first shot with the man advantage early and capitalized.  Liam Blackburn fed David Pope with a nice goal giving West Kelowna a 2-0 lead at 5:28 Blackburn with the lone assist.  The Vipers struggled most of the period needed almost four minutes to record their first shot of the period.  The Vipers with just three shots in the first ten minutes of play.  The Warriors carried the better of the play in the first half outplaying Vernon but didnt get alot of real good quality chances.  Danny Todosychuk did have to be sharp making several saves.  Vernon did finally put together a real hard working few shifts just before the midway point, getting some pressure in the Warriors zone for a few minutes but couldnt get any shots towards the net as West Kelowna's defence played very well most of the night.  The Warriors did a great job at blocking shots, getting in the shooting lanes not giving the Vipers any time or space.  At the halfway mark Steven Myland replaced Andy Desautels who saved all thirteen Vernon shots.  The Vipers would get two powerplays pretty close together but again struggled with the man advantage.  The Warriors who were very solid man on man were attacking the Vipers not giving them any time or space all period as the Warriors would kill off both minors.  Late in the second a minor scrum broke out in front of the Vipers net with Josh Bryan and Connor Bucsis wrestling to the ice as both players were given minors.  West Kelowna would get a late powerplay that would go into the third period.  The Warriors outplayed the Vipers with very little quality scoring chances but were up 2-0 after 40 minutes of play.  West Kelowna outshot Vernon 15-6.

3rd Period:  The Warriors would start the final frame with the man advantage that was carried over from the end of the 2nd period.  Colton Sparrow shorthanded off the opening faceoff with a great individual effort tried splitting the defence got off a backhand but couldnt beat Steven Myland in close as the final few seconds of the powerplay would come to an end as Vernon would kill off the penalty.  Vernon would get on the scoreboard early after some nice passing.  Michael McNicholas would setup Dexter Dancs in front who went high on Myland making this a one goal game at 1:09 McNicholas and Mason Blacklock with the helpers.  This goal gave the Vipers some life as Vernon come out with a strong effort and looked good early.  Vernon was skating hard, making some nice crisp passes and playing like a team as the Vipers with the early edge in play.  Seven minutes into the period Michael McNicholas with a chance at the side of the goal couldnt hit the net just missing on a close call in front.  The Vipers with several good opportunities but once again West Kelowna getting in the shooting lanes, blocking shots and being right on top of the Vernon players made it difficult for the Vipers to get any quality shots towards the net.  David Pope with a three on two lead the rush but was stopped by Todosychuk who played very well tonight.  Kenny Citron with a quick low shot from the point was tipped in front but Steven Myland made a nice save keeping this a one goal game.  At one point both teams went several minutes without a shot but it was Vernon who was the better of the two teams in the third outplaying the Warriors.  Logan Mick tried sending Craig Martin in for the breakaway but missed on the pass.  The Vipers would get a late powerplay but with just two shots and a solid penalty kill, West Kelowna would kill off the minor.  With time winding down the Vipers couldnt get out of their own end, West Kelowna with good pressure down low in the final three minutes pinned the Vipers deep not allowing Vernon a chance to pull Todosychuk for the extra man.  Feeling the pressure the Warriors would get a late powerplay with just over a minute remaining.  The Vipers needed some time to setup before finally getting Danny Todosychuk to the bench for the extra attacker with only thirty seconds remaining.  With no real pressure Liam Blackburn put the game away with an empty netter at 19:46 Blackburn's goal was unassisted.  The Vipers outplayed the Warriors but ended up falling short 3-1 as West Kelowna picks up their first win of the pre-season snapping Vernon's two game winning streak.  Shots were even at 9-9.

Top Players:  (Vernon)

Josh Bryan played a strong game on Vernon's blueline.  I really like the looks of Bryan all through out Training Camp and into the pre-season.  A big kid is solid on the backend, moves the puck well and isnt afraid of the physical play or rough stuff.

Colton Sparrow played a heck of a game up front for the Vipers.  The Vernon product played with alot of jump, was skating hard and battled all night.

Michael McNicholas (1 assist)  Had atleast three good scoring opportunities played well tonight.

Danny Todosychuk (33 saves)  Made his second straight start of the exhibition season didnt have to make alot of out standing saves but played very well between the pipes tonight.  Was very good on his rebound control as well.

Game Thoughts:  (Vernon)

I thought Vernon got off to a great start, two back to back chances in the opening minute and a bit played very well early before giving up the first goal on the Warriors first shot on net.  I thought the Vipers played verll well for two out of the three periods and were the better of the two teams in the 1st and 3rd periods.  I was impressed with the Vipers crisp passing tonight, and how they stepped up there play after a terrible second period.  I wasnt too pleased with the powerplay, needs some work.  I thought the Vipers had several good chances tonight but also didnt have alot of puck luck.  Overall for a pre-season game this was a pretty entertaining game.  Vernon worked hard especially in the 1st and 3rd periods and deserved a better ending.  I thought the Vipers played very well in the 3rd, battled and worked very hard getting some good chances but couldnt capitalize or get any puck luck.

Top Players:  (West Kelowna)

David Pope (1 goal)  Played very well for West Kelowna tonight.  The veteran forward played hard and well all game.  Very strong, good skater, good with the puck and really sees and reads the ice-play well.

Connor Bucsis played very well for the Warriors.  Had a few good chances as well as competed all night.  Was always in and around the net.

Liam Blackburn (1 goal & 2 assists)  Was also very good for West Kelowna tonight.  Very quick, crafty in and around the net, battles hard, isnt afraid to go into the corners or grey area's for the puck.

Braxton Bilous played very well on the blueline.

Andy Desautels (13 saves)  Recently aquired from the AJHL Desautels played very well between the pipes.

Game Thoughts:  (West Kelowna)

I thought the Warriors got off to a bit of a slow start.  Opened the scoring early but still couldnt seem to turn the tables before finally getting their legs going and played much better the final four or five minutes of the first period.  This play continued into the 2nd as West Kelowna looked hungry and was very good really outplaying the Vipers.  This team dosnt give you alot of time or space, they block alot of shots, get in the shooting lanes as well as attack who ever has the puck, making the Vipers turn over the puck or make the first mistake.  The Warriors with a gutsy effort on defence tonight, played very well on the backend all night.  A good penalty kill, keeping the shots against to a minimum.  Played the body most of the night and won alot of the battles down low.  I didnt think West Kelowna generated alot of scoring chances, sure they got a decent amount of shots but not alot of real great opportunities.  I noticed the Warriors changed logos on their home jerseys.  West Kelowna was wearing their home uniforms tonight, now having there previous third set logo on the home jerseys.  Both these two teams will wrap up the pre-season with a re-match tomorrow night in West Kelowna.

Vipers Narrowing In On Final 22-Man Roster:

This is in todays Morning Star Newspaper:

Vipers narrowing in on final 22-man roster

Published: August 30, 2013

The Vernon Vipers have two more games and two more cuts to finalize their roster for the coming B.C. Hockey League season.

Vernon head coach/GM Jason Williamson trimmed his roster to 24 players following the Vipers’ 3-1 exhibition win over the Prince George Spruce Kings Wednesday night at 100 Mile House.

He released goaltenders Harrison Whitlock and Gunnar Neilson, along with 1996-born defenceman Matt Halvorson, who played last season with the Vernon Midget Tier 1 Vipers.

Halvorson is expected to join the North Okanagan Junior B Knights, who relied on him as a call-up throughout their run to the KIJHL final last year.

With two goalies, seven d-men and 15 forwards remaining at camp, Williamson will have to make two more cuts up front. He will further evaluate his players tonight as the Vipers entertain the West Kelowna Warriors in the first game of a home-and-home set. The Snakes wrap up the preseason Saturday at Royal LePage Place.

Vernon begins the regular season at the second annual BCHL Showcase Tournament at Prospera Centre in Chilliwack. The Snakes battle the defending Fred Page Cup champion Surrey Eagles on Saturday, Sept. 7 (11:30 a.m.), followed by the Chilliwack Chiefs on Sunday, Sept. 8 (6 p.m.).

“I’ve got some tough decisions to make,” said Williamson, who is impressed with how the team has come together so far in the preseason.

“Our dee was good. Simple. Our forwards were physical. We were good pretty much from start to finish.”

He also praised netminder Danny Todosychuk, who made his preseason debut in 100 Mile House after missing the last week to a muscle tweak.

“He played well for not playing in a while. He made some unbelievable saves. He looked like a veteran in there.”

Williamson noted 20-year-old netminder Austin Smith, who is also nursing a muscle pull, is close to returning to action.

“He’s been on the ice and skating,” said Williamson. “He did good work over the summer and from what we did see, it’s standard Smitty.”

Tyler Povelovskie, playing close to his native Williams Lake, tipped a Mark Hamilton point shot to open Vernon’s account midway through the first period.

Matty Saharchuk made it 2-0 before the intermission as he one-timed a gorgeous saucer pass courtesy of Michael McNicholas.

D-man Jason Bird earned his second assist of the night as he set up forward Mike Iovanna down low on a second-period powerplay. With space to move, Iovanna walked in on net and beat Alex Murray high, gloveside, with a backhand.

Justin Rai answered for the Spruce Kings in the third period, assisted by Caleb Thompson and Chad Staley.

The Vipers’ Dexter Dancs scrapped Lucas Formica in a long, spirited fight in the second period.

Meanwhile, the Vipers and Save-On-Foods are hosting a tailgate party barbecue in the Kal Tire Place parking lot before tonight’s game.

The fan appreciation event starts at 4:30 p.m. and will include entertainment by Kiss-FM, an inflatable bouncy castle and a meet-and-greet with the Vipers. The host RBC Cup committee will also be on hand to promote the 2014 national junior A hockey championship being held in Vernon next May.

Calvin Collects Four Points As Vipers Outlast SilverBacks:

This is in todays Morning Star Newspaper:

Calvin collects four points as Vipers outlast SilverBacks

By Graeme Corbett - Vernon Morning Star

Published: August 28, 2013

Competing for a job tends to bring the best out in an athlete. Add in the built-in rivalry of a B.C. Hockey League tilt between the Vernon Vipers and Salmon Arm SilverBacks, and even the exhibition season can offer a thrill a minute.

The Snakes and ‘Backs combined for five powerplay goals and a couple scraps, with the host Vipers eking out a 7-5 preseason win Saturday night at Kal Tire Place.

Rookie forward Dallas Calvin led Vernon’s attack with two goals and two assists, including the opening snipe on a backdoor feed from linemate Demico Hannoun.

“He set me up pretty nicely for an open net, so I didn’t have to do much for that one,” smiled the 6-foot-5 Kootenay product, who racked up 31-43-74 in 40 games last season with the Beaver Valley Nitehawks.

“It’s always nice to get points, but it’s even better when you’re helping the team win.”

Second-year forward Logan Mick made it 2-0 early in the second period as he drove to the net and chipped the puck over netminder Adam Clark’s pad going across the crease.

Mick got into a third-period scrap with the SilverBacks’ Jack Berezin, not long after the Vipers’ Adam Nanji and Salmon Arm’s Joey Colatarci dropped the mitts.

A pair of Vernon products – Harlan Orr and Colton Thibault – replied for the SilverBacks later in the second period. Orr capitalized on a Calvin turnover at the sidewall at 6:04, while Thibault one-timed a Thomas Plese feed on the powerplay at 7:40.

Thibault, who helped the North Okanagan Knights reach the KIJHL final last season, said the calibre of play in the BCHL is noticeable, even in preseason.

“It’s a lot less time and space. There’s guys on you in a split second. In Junior B, I had to move around and think what I was going to do. With this, I’ve got to think quicker and move faster.”

Thibault texted Matty Saharchuk after Saturday’s game to check in on his former Knights’ teammate. Thibault earned a misconduct for a hit to the head as the two raced for a puck in the corner.

“He looked back at me and gave me a little smirk from it,” said Thibault.

Hannoun, on a partial breakaway, and Plese, on a scramble in front of netminder Harrison Whitlock during a Salmon Arm man advantage, exchanged second-period goals.

Taro Hirose showed great hands in going top shelf on second-half tender Gunnar Neilson for the Gorillas’ third-straight powerplay marker, early in the third frame.

Vernon’s man advantage then came to life as Calvin set up Mason Blacklock for a one-timer, followed by a Jason Bird bomb from the point to put the Vipers back in front.

Vernon got a two-goal cushion when forwards Cole Golka and Tyler Povolovskie pressured a Salmon Arm defender into a turnover, which resulted in a Dean Allison snipe from the high slot.

Hirose set up Jordan Levesque to bring the visitors back within a goal, but Calvin added an empty-netter with five seconds to play.

Assistant coaches Kevin Kraus of the SilverBacks and Dave Robinson of the Vipers, who were teammates for Vernon’s 2010 RBC Cup run, weren’t surprised by the level of intensity Saturday night.

“We’ve got seven more games against them in the regular season and I anticipate every game is going to be that way,” said Kraus. “Good hockey, at the same time, a lot of emotion.

“There’s fire brewing already. It’s part of the sport. It doesn’t matter who you’re playing, or if you played for them before. I’m a Salmon Arm SilverBack now and the emotion is there. It makes for a better game.”

Added Robinson: “It’s exhibition, but I was feeling the intensity behind the bench and I’m sure it was magnified on the ice. I’m sure they don’t like those guys after one game.”

The Vipers released forwards Steven Fehr, Nanji and Cole Golka following weekend action, leaving them with 15 forwards, eight d-men and four goalies.

Danny Todosychuk is expected to start tonight as the Vipers battle the Prince George Spruce Kings in 100 Mile House. Vernon concludes the preseason with a home-and-home series with the West Kelowna Warriors starting Friday at Kal Tire Place.

SNAKE BITES: Ex-Viper Dylan Walchuk, entering his first season with the University of Calgary Dinos, had a dream assignment filling in for Joe Thornton during Team Canada’s walk-through at its Olympic orientation camp Monday in Calgary. The 21-year-old had a stall between Boston Bruins’ winger Brad Marchand and Pittsburgh Penguins’ captain Sidney Crosby. “I think I can be first line with Sid,” Walchuk joked with The Calgary Herald. “I need a good start. I need to have a pretty solid season.”

Vipers Drive For KidSport:

Vipers drive for KidSport

By Kevin Mitchell - Vernon Morning Star

 Published: August 28, 2013

With KidSport as the major fundraising benefactor, the penthouse teams in the second annual Vernon Vipers Charity Golf Tournament turned their prizes over to the Telus-sponsored juniors at The Rise.

It was all about the kids Sunday afternoon as 19 foursomes tackled fast greens and firm fairways on a course blessed with jaw-dropping scenery.

Logan Stockley’s entry, who carded a scorching 14-under 58 to claim first place, donated golf bags to juniors Dexter Weiten and Christian Lacasse, both of Vernon, and Ryan Moon and Ethan Hunt, both of Kelowna.

The Vipers’ coaching staff, who bolstered their roster with long-ball hitter Bryce Kakoske, a former Viper, also shot 58 and handed over Nike 60-degree wedges to the juniors.

Lee Ranger, head pro at The Rise, said proceeds from the scramble would easily surpass last year’s total of $5,000 for KidSport. The local Royal Bank Cup committee will also gain some monies.

Logan, his father, Derek Stockley (one of the 21 Rise founding members), Brent Dorion and Mike Prokopetz used a big birdie binge for glory and some sweet Viper clothing and hats.

“It was pretty much a streak of 10 straight birdies starting on the third hole,” said Logan. “It was pretty much two guys making the putts. Brent was making all the short putts, from five to 10 feet in, and Mike Prokopetz was making all the long putts so he was making it easy for us. I think I made two putts all day. They carried the team for us. I hit the fairways and they hit the greens.”

Jason Williamson, Kris Mallette and Dave Robinson could have shared one bag as they nicely combined with Kakoske, who got engaged to Lori Adams just hours before tee off. They carded three eagles.

“It was good out there,” said Mallette, the team’s new associate coach. “I drained a bunch of long, long putts and Kakoske bombed one 420 today on 10 or 11. I think each of us used three clubs all day, so it was either a pitching wedge, driver or putter. It was a real good time.”

The coaches laughed when Robinson won a dozen balls as a door prize.

“He lost a lot of balls today so he really needed those,” chuckled Mallette.

Weiten, 13, wrote a short essay to Ranger, earning him a free spot in the tournament on Telus.

“I wrote about how I used to play high-level hockey but I got one major concussion and two minor so I switched to soccer for a year and this is now my third year of golf,” said Weiten, entering Grade 8 at Kalamalka Secondary.

Weiten, a 12 handicap, practises at Hillview and plays at Vernon Golf & Country Club. He was with Viper defencemen Michael Statchuk and Jason Bird, along with Rick Christensen of Buy-Low Foods.

“We hit every green in regulation and we hit all the par fives in two and two-putted for birdie,” shrugged Weiten, whose family is billeting Statchuk.

Doug Ross of KidSport addressed the golfers at dinner, announcing that the organization has shelled out almost $250,000 on 2,000 local athletes since 2001.

The third-place entry of firefighters Chris Robinson, Doug Imrich, John Doorman and Darren Cecchini received $100 Boston Pizza gift cards.

Lacasse, Eric Gombrich and Kris Vandooyeweert claimed KISS-FM closest-to-the-pin prizes.

Viper grad Aaron Volpatti, of the Washington Capitals, and NHL free agent Jerred Smithson, were the guest celebrities.

Sports editor Kevin Mitchell joined Viper d-man Josh Bryan, Scott Simpson of Valley Marine and Moon on The Morning Star entry, which finished 10th at seven-under.

Former Viper Walchuk Fills In For Joe Thornton At Team Canada's Orientation Camp:

Former Vernon Vipers forward Dylan Walchuk filled in for
Joe Thornton during Hockey Canada's walk-through at Olympic orientation camp.  Walchuk played parts of three seasons in Vernon (2009-2012) is now entering his first year at the University of Calgary.  Walkchuk left Vernon after two seasons for the University of Northern Michigan before returning to the Vipers in December of 2011 after playing in just 19 games at Northern Michigan.  After just six games with the Vipers Walchuk left Vernon for the WHL Spokane Cheifs where he would finish his junior hockey career (2012-2013).  In 117 games with the Vipers Walchuk collected (44-65-109).

Dino Walchuk gets dream call to fill in at Team Canada orientation camp

Former Spokane Chiefs forward ends up on a line with Taylor Hall and Jordan Staal

 By Kristen Odland, Calgary Herald

August 26, 2013

Think about this scenario.

You are a 21-year-old hockey player, minding your own business on a Sunday evening when your phone rings. On the other end, it’s your university hockey coach telling you Team Canada needs an extra player.

Oh, and they’ve asked for you.

What do you think a guy is going to say?

“I think I just got lucky,” downplayed University of Calgary forward Dylan Walchuk, grinning and embracing the growing media scrum around him at ice level. “I don’t know. The coaches came out and put our team through a walk-through the other day and I guess someone got sick or someone didn’t show up and they called me to fill in.

“Why not?”

With Philadelphia Flyers forward Claude Giroux already out, recovering from finger surgery, and Joe Thornton, who stayed home to be with his 2-month old baby in the hospital, the men’s Olympic team orientation camp was down to 45 from 47 players on Monday.

So, needing an extra winger and someone who could slide seamlessly into Team Canada’s walk-through/ball hockey practice at Calgary’s Markin McPhail Centre, head coach Mike Babcock contacted U of C head coach Mark Howell to find an able body on his Canadian Interuniversity Sport squad.

And, there you have it — Walchuk, a former Western Hockey League forward with the Spokane Chiefs, actually turned into one of the biggest stars of the day.

“That’s the best story about this whole thing so far,” Babcock said. “Life is about what you make of it. (Coach) Mark Howell and the U of C Dinosaurs helped us out, and they helped us out to get the coaches organized. Their team had a team party, a double-kegger the night before I came in.

“We put them through the paces and that kid was the best kid on the ice by a million miles.”

As they say, when you do good things, good things happen.

Which is how Walchuk ended up sitting in Hockey Canada’s dressing room on Monday morning in a stall beside Boston Bruins winger Brad Marchand and, who else, Sidney Crosby.

“It was like a dream come true,” said the McBride, B.C., native who had only committed to U of C two weeks ago. “It was sweet. To see those guys on TV all the time and then getting to play with them. They’re all good guys and it was an experience I will never forget.

“It will be cool to see myself on television (Monday).”

His highlight package will also include footage of him on a line, playing ball hockey with Carolina Hurricanes forward Jordan Staal and Edmonton Oilers star Taylor Hall.

“It was fun to see him out here,” Hall said. “I’m sure he’s having a blast being around all these guys. He did pretty good. He didn’t mess up any drills, which is more than I can say if I was in his shoes. ... I’m sure he’s making all his buddies jealous.

“He did a good job. He was on my line, and we didn’t get into any trouble from the coach, so it was good.”

Walchuk’s chances of making the 2014 Olympic team are slim despite what he informed the media on Monday.

“I think I can be first line with Sid,” he said jokingly. “I need a good start. I need to have a pretty solid season.”

But, all in all, the experience was enviable and Walchuk was planning to take a lot away from it.

“I want to take these shoes, actually,” he deadpanned, pointing to his black Hockey Canada-issued Nikes. “They’re pretty nice shoes.

“I’m going to hop the glass and get out of here.”

Kings Acquire Keats from Winnipeg

Friday, August 23, 2013 - Submitted by Alex Rawnsley

The Powell River Kings have acquired 1995-born forward Kurt Keats from the Winnipeg Blues in the Manitoba Junior Hockey League. In exchange, the Kings send Jordan Paddock (93-D), Matt Dupont (93-F), Landon Robin (94-F) and future considerations to the Blues.

Keats, from Winnipeg, has played for the Blues the last two years, playing in 106 games, scoring 25 times and adding 71 assists. He also suited up for Team Canada West at the World Junior A Challenge in Nova Scotia in 2012, where he played 4 games and scored 1 goal on route to a silver medal. In Powell River, he will be reunited with his Canada West teammates Luke Ripley and Jonah Imoo.

"It was the experience of a lifetime (playing at the WJAC)" says Keats. The 5'8, 170lb forward who was also a part of Team West for the World Under 17 Championships in 2011/2012 considers himself a setup man.

"I'd say I'm a playmaker, I like to work the puck down low and cycle the puck" says Keats. His near point-per-game performance has been consistant throughout his entire career, and is something he's hoping to continue with in Powell River. "Hopefully it translates over, obviously looking to have a good year and put up some good numbers for the Kings."

The trade came at a high cost for the Kings, who gave up experience, with a pair of 20 year olds heading east, in addition to the 19-year old Robin.

"This was a very difficult decision to make" says Kings Head Coach and GM Kent Lewis. "We are losing some great kids who gave a lot to our organization. However, we felt that we needed to fill a void at the center position and we feel Kurt is exactly the type of player we wanted to add. We would like to welcome Kurt to our orgainzation and are looking forward to his arrival to Powell River."

Keats will make the trip from Winnipeg to Powell River in the coming days, likely in time for exhibition games on the lower mainland during the Labour Day long weekend. He's looking forward to getting settled in a new town for the first time.

"All the guys I've talked to about the Kings just had so many good things to say about the town and the team, they're always a competitive team, always in the playoff hunt and definately a place I want to be."

The Kings would like to thank Jordan, Matt and Landon for all of their work both on and off the ice during their time in Powell River.

Vipers Bow To Salmon Arm SilverBacks In Exhibition Opener:

Vipers bow to Salmon Arm SilverBacks in exhibition opener

Published: August 25, 2013

Evan Anderson pocketed a pair of goals as the host Salmon Arm SilverBacks bounced the Vernon Vipers 5-1 in B.C. Hockey League exhibition play Friday night at the Shaw Centre.

The ‘Backs, who fell 2-1 to the host Merritt Centennials a night earlier, scored in the opening minute. Vernon’s Craig Martin replied for the Snakes shortly after on a one-timer from the slot, assisted by fellow Kootenay product Dallas Calvin.

“Marty (Martin) was terrific,” said Vipers’ head coach Jason Williamson, who dressed only a handful of veterans for the game. “He skated well and had several good scoring chances.”

Williamson went with a young goalie tandem, with Gunnar Neilson and Harrison Whitlock sharing crease duties. Incumbents Austin Smith and Danny Todosychuk both sat out with minor injuries, and were also likely to miss Saturday night’s rematch at Kal Tire Place.

Scoring for the SilverBacks were Evan Anderson, with a pair, Thomas Plese, Jeff Kennedy and Josh Bowes.

Aside from some soft goals, Williamson was pleased with Vernon’s defensive game as the Vipers outshot Salmon Arm 28-20.

“There’s some things that we’ll have to shore up, but overall the effort was there,” he said.

Williamson made two more cuts following Friday’s game – forwards Matt Hill and Kai Cathers – leaving him with 17 forwards, nine dee and four goalies.

The Vipers will meet the Prince George Spruce Kings for a Wednesday-nighter in 100 Mile House, and will conclude the preseason with a home-and-home series with the West Kelowna Warriors starting Friday (7 p.m.) in Vernon.

After one full year at the helm of the SilverBacks, head coach/GM Troy Mick has a much better understanding of what his team can do.

“We have a lot better idea of what are roster is and where we’re coming from,” said Mick, who has had two stints as head coach with the Vipers.

“We were always OK with our size, but this year we’re faster and more skilled. Last year, we had to grind out wins.

“The culture has officially changed in Salmon Arm.”

Vernon minor hockey products Harlan Orr, Alex Gillies, Alex Jewell and Colton Thibault are all with the SilverBacks.
