Royal Bank Cup: Yorkton 2 Dauphin 1 (Overtime)

For anyone who could not attend or watch today’s RBC Cup game here are my thoughts and views from today’s game. You may agree or disagree but we all have our own view and opinion on any game we watch. This is my opinion and my thoughts on how I saw today’s game. I try to be unbiased and give a fare recap on both sides. Thanks for stopping by & visiting my blog.

I was at this afternoon's RBC Cup game as Yorkton defeated Dauphin 2-1 in overtime at Kal Tire Place.

Starting Goaltenders:

Yorkton: Kale Thomson
Dauphin: Michael Stiliadis

1st Period: The Terriers would get into penalty trouble early and give Dauphin three powerplays in the opening period but the Kings couldnt capitalize going 0-2 with the man advantage.  Not alot of great scoring opportunities in the period.  The Kings had a great chance early to start the game but Kale Thomson come up with a huge save, while the Terriers with a great chance late in the period couldnt beat former Vernon Vipers goaltender Michael Stiliadis.  Some good flow at both ends of the rink but neither team could generate much offence in a tight checking game.  It was scoreless after 20 minutes of play.  Dauphin outshot Yorkton 11-9.

2nd Period: The Kings started the period still on the powerplay that was carried over from the 1st period would open the scoring early with the man advantage.  Dylan Butler setup Brent Wold for the perfect pass in front put Dauphin up 1-0 at 0:46 The Kings with a strong period carried the better of the play and were the more dominate team outplaying the Terriers most of the period. Kale Thomson was very good between the pipes making atleast five or six big saves keeping the Terriers in the game.  The Kings would get into penalty trouble as Yorkton would get three second period powerplays but couldnt capitalize.  It was 1-0 Dauphin after 40 minutes of play.  The Kings outshot the Terriers 16-11.

3rd Period: Yorkton come out strong to start the final frame, with lots of pressure the Terriers were buzzing and would eventually tie the game after a seeing shot found the back of the net at 8:10  The Kings back on their heels couldnt seem to generate much offence.  Tyler Giebel's seeing eye shot somehow got through a ton of traffic and bodies on the way to the goal found the back of the cage on a goal Stiliadis I dont think even saw the puck.  Dauphin would slowly come back as both teams were again going back and fourth but again not alot of great looks or opportunities at both ends.  Both teams playing a tight checking game, didnt give one another alot of room out there late in the game.  It was tied 1-1 after 60 minutes of play.  Yorkton outshot Dauphin 12-7.

Overtime: The Kings with a strong start to overtime come out hard, getting some pressure attacked early and often had the early edge in play but didnt get any real good chances before the Terriers come close to putting the game away early after Michael Stiliadis was caught outside of his crease but Yorkton couldnt get to the loose puck fast enough for a shot at the open net.  This play seemed to cause some troubles for the Kings while the Terriers got possesion of the puck, moved the puck around before Brett Boehm setup Derek Falloon in front for the game winner at 2:40 Dauphin outshot Yorkton 2-1.

Top Players: (Yorkton)

Devon McMullen like he has all tournament played another solid game on the Terriers blueline.  Very smooth skater and good with and without the puck, sees a ton of ice.

Chase Norrish (1 assist) another Yorkton defenceman that has looked good and played very well at the RBC Cup.  Had a strong game this afternoon.

Brett Boehm (2 assists) Also has played very well for the Terriers at the National Championship.

Tyler Giebel (1 goal) Played very well today, was good up front.

Kale Thomson (35 saves) Didnt look all that great at the start of the tournament but has really come on and played very well the last two games for Yorkton.  Was at his best in the second period (15 saves) made some big saves kept the Terriers in the game, when the Kings were mounting some good pressure, generating some good opportunities.

Game Thought's: (Yorkton)

In a must win situation the Yorkton Terriers at 1-3 pulled out a win this afternoon coming from behind a goal heading into the 3rd rallied pulled out a huge 2-1 overtime victory to advance to Saturday's semi-finals.  A loss by Yorkton today and the season was over, a win this afternoon and now Vernon & Toronto Lakeshore will play tonight as both teams need a win to advance to the semi-finals, with the loser going home.  I thought Yorkton played well in the 1st and 3rd, there down fall was the 2nd period.  Kale Thomson made some big saves keeping his club in the game and giving them a chance to win.  I thought the Terriers played well defensively, kept the Kings to the outside and limited their chances.  Both teams played a tight checking game with not alot of chances.

Top Players: (Dauphin)

Chandler Irwin I thought was one of Dauphin's better players this afternoon.  Played a solid game on the Kings backend.

Justin Valentino played well, seemed to be all over the ice today.

Brayden Cuthbert has really looked good at the RBC Cup, played well again today.

Michael Stiliadis (31 saves) Made a few real huge saves for the Kings, I didnt think was as busy as Kale Thomson but played well today.  I think Stiliadis is the top goaltender at the tournament and has played very well all RBC Cup.

Game Thought's: (Dauphin)

Heading into today's game the Kings were atop the RBC Cup standings at 3-0 and in a mean nothing game other then team pride the Kings didnt have much to lose.  I thought both teams were fairly evenly matched in a tight checking game with a few big hits but not overly a very physical hockey game.  I thought both teams were fairly even in the 1st while the Kings were the better of the teams in the 2nd.  In the 3rd Yorkton carried the play early with lots of pressure, were able to tie the game but as the period went on I thought both teams were matched well.  Both teams kept each other to the outside for most of the afternoon, not alot of great opportunities in a game that went back and fourth but with not alot of action.
