For anyone who could not attend or watch today’s RBC Cup game here are my thoughts and views from today’s game. You may agree or disagree but we all have our own view and opinion on any game we watch. This is my opinion and my thoughts on how I saw today’s game. I try to be unbiased and give a fare recap on both sides. Thanks for stopping by & visiting my blog.
I was at this afternoon's RBC Cup game as Toronto Lakeshore defeated Yorkton 5-1 in front of a decent size crowd at Kal Tire Place.
Starting Goaltenders:
Toronto Lakeshore: Evan Buitenhuis
Yorkton: Kale Thomson
1st Period: The Terriers got on the board first and early, just 1:18 into the contest Yorkton caught Evan Buitenhuis out of position and out of the blue paint were able to get the loose puck into the open cage for their only goal of the game. The Patriots responded quickly tying the game just twenty two seconds later before taking over the game. Just over three minutes later Toronto Lakeshore took a 2-1 lead and even though either team didnt get alot of pucks to the net the Patriots were the better of the two teams, carried most of the play. The Terriers didnt have alot of puck possesion most of the afternoon was in their own end most of the game. Toronto Lakeshore was up 2-1 after 20 minutes of play. Shots were even 6-6.
2nd Period: The Patriots with two goals in the middle frame really took over the game outplayed Yorkton in the 2nd period. The Terriers got into penalty trouble were down three goals looked rattled and come unglued at times getting involved in the after the whistle activities getting off their game. The Patriots again were the better team, carried the play and looked good. Yorkton with very little puck possesion had troubles all afternoon generating any kind of offensive attack. The Terriers had troubles getting into the Toronto Lakeshore zone, and getting any kind of forecheck or pressure going. The puck would get into the Patriots zone before coming right back out. Kale Thomson made two big saves late in the period to keep this game from getting away on Yorkton. The Pats were up 4-1 after 40 minutes of play. Toronto Lakeshore outshot Yorkton 13-7.
3rd Period: With a three goal lead heading into the third, the Pats slowed the game down, carried the better of the play at times but did a good job at winding down the clock without giving up any real scoring chances, and did a great job at not allowing the Terriers back in the game. A pretty slow period with not alot of action in a period where it looked like both teams just wanted to wind the clock down and call it a game. The Patriots would score once more for a 5-1 lead. Toronto Lakeshore outshot Yorkton 13-10.
Top Players: (Tornonto Lakeshore)
Cory Lauer I thought played well on Toronto Lakeshore's backend. Was steady, not too flashy but played well through out the game.
Matt Marchese looked good for the Patriots today. Quick on his feet, moves the puck well and seems to always be involved in the play.
Jacob Hayhurst Is by far Toronto Lakeshore's best player. Stood out in yesterday's afternoon tilt vs Dauphin was very strong again today. Very quick, moves the puck well and skilled.
Game Thought's: (Toronto Lakeshore)
I wouldnt say today was a must win but the Pats didnt want to go down 0-2 in their first two games at the RBC Cup. After a 2-1 loss yesterday to the Dauphin Kings in a game the Patriots should have won, Toronto Lakeshore has really impressed me so far in the tournament. This team I would say is the smallest club at the 2014 Royal Bank Cup but one of if not the fastest-quickest team I have seen and Ive been at all the games so far. The Patriots are quick, they move the puck well, good on their feet, not that physical or really play the body but more of a puck moving team that is skilled and can put the puck in the net. There defence so far has looked pretty good. In the two games they have played its been hard to get a read on there goaltending, as I dont think Evan Buitenhuis has been overly tested yet in the first two games. Hes looked good at times making some good saves.
Top Players: (Yorkton)
Joshua Ellis impressed me today, this kid played with alot of jump and energy. Laid out some big hits this afternoon, plays strong, works hard and always involved in the play. A gritty-grinder type of player.
Brett Boehm saw alot of ice for the Terriers, I would say was one of there more consistant players today. In a 5-1 game was one of the better Yorkton players.
Kale Thomson (27 saves) I dont know if you could blame Thomson on any of the five goals but early on it didnt look good for the Yorkton goaltender who gave up four goals on just twelve shots. Thomson seemed to get stronger as the game went along and come up with some big saves for the Terriers, otherwise this could have been a 7-1 or 8-1 final. Thomson didnt stand on his head or steal the show but kept the Terriers in the contest as the game went along and played well.
Game Thought's: (Yorkton)
It looked good early as the Terriers scored 1:18 into the game before giving up five straight falling 5-1 to Toronto Lakeshore in the teams first game of the RBC Cup. I wasnt overly impressed with Yorkton much of the afternoon. The Terriers had trouble all day getting the puck-play into the Pats zone and if they did couldnt generate much of a forecheck or pressure generating very little offence all afternoon. Yorkton kind of like the Vipers last night took too many penalties and seemed to get off their game in the 2nd period. The Terriers were outplayed and outworked most of the afternoon will play the Vipers tomorrow night.
