May 04, 2014

The Dauphin Kings are heading to the RBC Cup following a 4-3 victory over the Spruce Grove Saints Sunday evening at the Crescent Point Energy Western Canada Cup.

The story of the game was the loss of Dauphin starting netminder Jordan Piccolino, he was hurt in the first period following a collision. So in came 16 year old Troy Martyniuk. He ended up stopping 24 of 26 shots he faced, some of which were very high quality. At the other end Tanner McCorriston turned aside 20 of 24.

Dauphin had numerous Power Plays, but couldn't score going 0 for 7. Spruce Grove ended the evening 0 for 3. Player of the game nods went to Spruce Grove's Corey Chorneyko while Troy Martyniuk got it for Dauphin

Kings win! Going to RBC Cup

May 4, 2014

Dauphin Kings are going to the RBC Cup. Before an ecstatic home crowd at Credit Union Place, Kings won in thrilling fashion, coming from behind to post a 4-3 victory over Spruce Grove Saints at the Crescent Point Energy Western Canada Cup.

Kings had their backs to the wall, after losing the 1-2 playoff to Yorkton Terriers Saturday night. Sunday’s second-berth game was all or nothing for the boys from Dauphin.

A number of heroes emerged for the Kings in Sunday afternoon’s game, most notably rookie goaltender Troy Martyniuk, who had begun the game as back-up to Jordan Piccolino, who was forced out of the game in the first period with the game deadlocked 1-1.

“It feels awesome,” Martyniuk told CKDM Radio. “It’s good to get the first game out of the way. Got a win for the boys! The crowd was behind me all the way. It was really exciting.”

Martyniuk, 16, played the past season with Winnipeg Thrashers and likely thought he would spend the WCC in the stands munching on popcorn. But the snacks would have to wait when an injury to Michael Stiliadis resulted in Martyniuk dressing on Sunday.

And he saw action. The Winnipeg native was outstanding in the win, keeping the Kings within striking distance. Down 3-1 early in the third period, Kings were energized by a shorthanded goal by Aubrey Chapman.

Kings then scored two goals within 90 seconds to pull ahead 4-3 – the game winner going to Chandler Irwin. Dylan Butler rounded out the Kings’ scoring.

“It feels great,” Irwin exclaimed. “We’re going to the RBC. I can hardly wait. This was a great win.”

Kings’ GM/Head coach Marlin Murray was understandably relieved and thrilled with the victory. The Kings had less than 12 hours to regroup after their disappointing loss to Yorkton, who will also advance to the RBC Cup.

“We knew Troy for a while. He’s a hard worker,” said Murray. “He’s the future of our goaltending. It was a tough spot for him to be in. He hadn’t played for a while; his midget club has been out for a bit. For Troy to come in with that composure, it settled everyone down. He made a couple of huge saves early in the game.

“The magnitude of this game ... for Troy to step in and play so well. I know the guys were trying to rally around him and play better defensively. He’s been to a number of our camps. We knew he was an excellent goaltender. We’re very proud of him.”

EXTRA SHOTS: Martyniuk was named the Kings’ player of the game…Preliminary reports on Piccolino is that he suffered a leg injury….RBC Cup begins Saturday, May 10….Kings last appearance at the RBC Cup was in 2010, losing in the final....Spruce Grove outshot the Kings 35-24.
