Royal Bank Cup: Dauphin 2 Toronto Lakeshore 1

For anyone who could not attend or watch today’s RBC Cup game here are my thoughts and views from today’s game. You may agree or disagree but we all have our own view and opinion on any game we watch. This is my opinion and my thoughts on how I saw today’s game. I try to be unbiased and give a fare recap on both sides. Thanks for stopping by & visiting my blog.

The 2014 Royal Bank Cup got underway this afternoon with the MJHL Western Canada Cup Host Dauphin Kings defeating the OJHL and Dudley Hewitt Cup Champion Toronto Lakeshore Patriots 2-1 in the first game of the RBC Cup.

I was at today's first game of the RBC Cup in front of a decent crowd, considering the Vipers werent playing.

Starting Goaltenders:

Toronto Lakeshore:  Evan Buitenhuis
Dauphin:  Michael Stiliadis

1st Period:  The Patriots come out strong, really took it to Dauphin early and often.  Toronto Lakeshore was by far the better team early had several chances couldnt beat former Vernon Vipers goaltender Michael Stiliadis who kept the Kings in the game in the opening period.  The Patriots could have easily been up by two or three goals in the 1st period couldnt beat Stiliadis.  Dauphin slowly started to get into the game and played and looked better in the second half of the period.  Both goaltenders played well in a scoreless period.  Toronto Lakeshore carried the better of the play and was the better of the two teams for most of the period.  The Patriots outshot Dauphin 14-10.

2nd Period:  The Patriots would open the scoring in the middle frame were once again the better of the two clubs, Toronto Lakeshore just like the 1st period carried the play, had some good chances couldnt get more then one goal past Michael Stiliadis.  The Patriots can really skate, move the puck well and it showed through out the game.  It was 1-0 for Toronto Lakeshore after two periods.  The Patriots outshot the Kings 12-8.

3rd Period:  The Kings seemed to settle down and play much better in the final frame.  The play was fairly even early before the game really opened up with some good back and fourth action.  Dauphin would tie the game, seemed to gain some confidence and momentum and then take over the remainder of the game really skating, moving the puck well creating and generating chances.  The Patriots with two great opportunities to take the lead couldnt beat Stiliadis who made two huge game savers late in the period.  One with just over five minutes remaining and then again with just over two minutes left.  Toronto Lakeshore come very close to taking the lead late with a scramble in and around the Kings goal but couldnt get control of the loose puck.  Dauphin with eventually score the game winner late with a minute and a half to go and were able to hold on for the win.  The Patriots outshot Dauphin 16-11.

Game Thought's: (Toronto Lakeshore)

I thought the Patriots were by far the better of the two teams, missed an opportunity to put this game away early couldnt beat Michael Stiliadis who come up with some good saves in the opening period to keep the Kings in the game.  Toronto Lakeshore is quick, really moves the puck well, quick on their feet and dangerous with the puck.  I thought the Patriots didnt use their speed in the 3rd, sagged back, didnt push the pace.  Toronto Lakeshore missed some great opportunities couldnt find the back of the net running into a hot goaltender.  If the Patriots get two or three early goals on Dauphin in that opening period, this would have been a different game with a different outcome.  The Patriots have several players that wear cages.  Is there a rule in Ontario for a certain age of player to be required to wear a facial cage?

Game Thought's: (Dauphin)

The Kings got better as the game went on but didnt get off to a great start.  Taking an early penalty Dauphin was held in their own end of the rink for most of the 1st period.  The Kings with very little puck possesion had troubles clearing the zone, breaking out of the zone and creating chances.  Dauphin slowly started to come along in the second half of the opening period but fell back down in the 2nd period where they were outplayed.  Give the Kings credit, they really stepped up there game in the final frame and took over the game after tying the game at one.  Dauphin used their speed and strong skating.  The Kings also relied heavily on Michael Stiliadis who was huge this afternoon, keeping the Kings in the game and giving them a chance to win.  The Kings need some work on clearing the zone and the front of the net, several times threw the puck up the middle, basically giving Toronto Lakeshore an opportunity with a scoring chance.  This was basically a no hitter with very few hits all game.
