Komets Name Former Vernon Viper Marino MVP & Mr. Hustle:

The East Coast Hockey League (ECHL) Fort Wayne Komets had their end year banquet with former Vernon Vipers forward Brandon Marino picking up two awards being named the teams Mr. Hustle award & team MVP. Marino was also named to the East Coast Hockey League (ECHL) 2013-14 All-ECHL First Team on April 10th 2014.

Marino is in his second season with the Komets after signing with the team on July, 17th 2012. In 72 games this season Marino collected (30-goals-58-assists-88-points). Marino finished as the ECHL's regular season leading scorer with 88 points.

Marino spent the past three seasons with the Central Hockey League (CHL) Quad City Mallards before signing with the Komets. Marino was named the 2011-12 Central Hockey League Most Valuable Player, as well as took home MVP at the 2012 CHL all-star game. Marino had a breakout season which he led the league with 41 goals and finished second with 90 points. The 5’ 9”, 185-pound Riverside, California native also led the league in power play goals (13), ranked fourth in assists (49) and finished tied for fourth in shorthanded goals (3) and game winning goals (7) while also posting a plus/minus rating of +9. Marino played just two games with the 2002-2003 Vernon Vipers.

Komets announce 2013-14 End of Season Awards

Fort Wayne, IN ---The Komets announced their End-of-Season Player Awards Saturday night following the regular season home finale against the Toledo Walleye at the Memorial Coliseum.  The awards were presented as follows:

• Bud Gallmeier Memorial Trophy/Community Service Award, for community service and dedication to the game of hockey in memory of long-time Komet beat writer Bud Gallmeier.  Winner:  Mike Embach

• The Wiegmann Family “True Komet” Award, exemplifying team spirit and a positive attitude on and off the ice.
Winner:  Kaleigh Schrock

• The NOB Brick Award, for the Stonewall Defensive Forward of the season.  Winner:  Chris Auger

• The Mr. Hustle Award, in honor of the memory of Cliff and Jean Fell, Jim and William Fell, and Pat Curtis, long-time Komet fans.  The award considers a player’s personal statistics (goals, assists and on-ice hits at home) and overall up-tempo style of game.  Winner:  Brandon Marino (second consecutive year)

• The Unsung Hero Award, the Komets’ 5/30 award in tribute to Komet Hall-of-Famers Robbie Irons and Terry Pembroke, given t the player whose hard work, dedication to his teammates and love of the game is in the true spirit of Komet legends Robbie Irons and Terry Pembroke.  Winner:  Mike Embach

• The Komet Kuarters Most Improved Player Award.  Winner:  Shawn Szydlowski

• The Komet Defenseman of the Year Award.  Winner:  Jordon Southorn

• The Komet Rookie of the Year Award.  Winner:  Scott Fleming

• The Komet Most Valuable Player Award, known as the Foss Folk Memorial Trophy sponsored by the Folk family and voted on by the Komet players themselves.  Winner:  Brandon Marino
