EDITORIAL: Support the RBC Cup in Vernon

It’s finally here.
The Royal Bank Cup Canadian Junior A hockey championship tournament Saturday through to May 18 at Kal Tire Place, that is.
And featuring our very own Vernon Vipers, six-time champions to boot, it should be a rollicking good time for all involved.
After months, indeed years, of planning the curtain finally draws open on the action at 2 p.m. Saturday when the Dauphin Kings and Toronto Lakeshore Patriots hit the ice for the first of 13 games over eight days.
The Vipers play the Carleton Place Canadians at 7 p.m. Saturday. The home team, then the Lakers, last hosted the national championship at the iconic Civic Arena in 1990. And if you believe in omens, it’s a good sign that 24 years ago Vernon staged a dramatic comeback to beat the heavily favoured New Westminster Royals 6-5 in an overtime thriller.
This year’s version of the championship is set to deliver its own memorable moments and we encourage all North Okanagan residents to take advantage of this opportunity to witness hockey history.
We congratulate RBC Cup chair Mike Lane and event manager Don Klepp, along with the Vipers hockey club, on successfully setting the stage for ‘The Excitement Returns.’
Now it’s time for the five teams to take to the ice and help put the North Okanagan in the sporting spotlight for the next eight days, including national television coverage of the final on TSN Sunday, May 18.
It’s also time for residents to do their part in welcoming teams and visitors to town and showing their support of the RBC Cup by attending a game or two, or three or 13, and help cheer the home team to victory.
Go Vipers Go!
