Royal Bank Cup: Carleton Place 4 Toronto Lakeshore 2

For anyone who could not attend or watch today’s RBC Cup game here are my thoughts and views from today’s game. You may agree or disagree but we all have our own view and opinion on any game we watch. This is my opinion and my thoughts on how I saw today’s game. I try to be unbiased and give a fare recap on both sides. Thanks for stopping by & visiting my blog.

I was at this afternoon's RBC Cup game as Carleton Place defeated Toronto Lakeshore 4-2 in front of a small crowd at Kal Tire Place.

Starting Goaltenders:

Carleton Place: Guillaume Therien
Toronto Lakeshore: Evan Buitenhuis

1st Period: The Canadians opened the scoring just 1:18 into the contest.  Vinny Post scored on a play in front of the net.  Carleton Place had a strong start as the Canadians were all over the Patriots.  The Canadians didnt get alot of opportunities but carried most of the play.  Toronto Lakeshore couldnt get the puck out of their own end or through the neutral zone come back late with a few good shifts in a pretty dull opening period with not alot of action.  Carleton Place was the better team outplayed Toronto Lakeshore for most of the 1st.  The Canadians had a 1-0 lead after 40 minutes of play.  Carleton Place outshot Toronto Lakeshore 13-9.

2nd Period: The Pats played a much better 2nd period as both teams were more evenly matched.  Again not alot of intensity or hitting through out the game.  Guillaume Therien made atleast two big saves in the middle frame keeping this a 1-0 game.  Both teams didnt really generate alot of great scoring chances as the puck was mostly kept to the outside.  Vinny Post looked to get hurt during the period, was slow to get off the ice returned later before neededing help off the ice and to the Canadians dressing room.  Post didnt return.  Andreas Tsogkas tied the game at 17:32 before the Canadians would come right back with two quick goals of their own.  Anthony Latina a minute later at 18:31 re-gained Carleton Place's lead before Brett D'Andrea replied on the powerplay giving the Canadians a 3-1 lead at 19:41 Both teams were fairly even as Carleton Place had a 3-1 lead after 40 minutes of play.  The Canadians outshot the Pats 12-10.

3rd Period: The Patriots come out hard and strong, attacking early Toronto Lakeshore with a ton of pressure early was really forcing the play and attack.  The Pats with several nice passing plays couldnt hit the net missing on some great opportunities.  It was all Toronto Lakeshore early and often but the Patriots couldnt hit the net.  Carleton Place looked to be back on their heels a bit couldnt get out of their own end.  The Patriots went atleast ten minutes without a shot on goal before finally getting three or four quick shots in on goal all at once.  The Canadians who didnt generate or create much offence in the 3rd would basically get their first real offensive chance and capitalize.  Luke Edwards put the Canadians up 4-1 at 12:19 This goal seemed to give Carleton Place some life as the Canadians would get their game going and finally get some pressure in the Pats zone.  The Patriots would get one late on the powerplay after Marcus Rose cut the Canadians lead to within two at 17:07 Toronto Lakeshore with a ton of pressure late for some reason didnt pull the goaltender for the extra attacker couldnt find the back of the net ran out of time.  Carleton Place would improve to 2-1 while Toronto Lakeshore fell to 1-2.  Carleton Place outshot Toronto Lakeshore 8-7.

Top Players: (Toronto Lakeshore)

Tyler Currie I thought played very well on the Patriots blueline.  This kid can skate, move the puck well and gets involved in the play.

Andreas Tsogkas (1 goal) Was very good this afternoon, one of the better Toronto Lakeshore players.  Hard to contain, moves quick, good stick handler.

Jacob Hayhurst (1 assist) Has really impressed me all tournament.  Another one of the Pats better players.  Very quick, can really skate, move the puck and create opportunities.

Marcus Rose (1 goal)  Reminds me alot of Jacob Hayhurst.  The two look and play alike, if it wasnt for the different numbers on there jerseys you would think there the same player.  Very quick, can move the puck and create and generate chances.

Game Thought's: (Toronto Lakeshore)

Didnt get off to a good start.  The Pats were outplayed and outskated most of the 1st period, gave up an early goal just 1:18 into the game just couldnt seem to get their legs going in the opening period.  I thought Toronto Lakeshore improved a bit in the second period and slowly started skating and moving their legs managed to tie the game late but gave up back to back goals also late in the frame.  In the third it was all Patriots, getting a ton of good looks and opportunities the Pats just couldnt hit the net missing on some great chances.  Toronto Lakeshore went atleast ten minutes without a shot on goal, carried the play in the period but couldnt hit the net.  I was very surprised down by two the Pats would get the play in deep, had some real good pressure for a few minutes in the Canadians zone didnt pull the goaltender for the extra attacker.  The Patriots didnt look or play as good as they did in the teams opening two games.

Top Players: (Carleton Place)

Elias Ghantous played very well on defence today.

Luke Edwards (1 goal & 1 assist) I thought played very well for the Canadians.  Played hard all afternoon, always seemed to be in and around the net.

Brett D'Andrea (1 goal & 2 assists) Had a strong game up front for the Canadians.

Vinny Post (1 goal) I thought looked good until he was injured and had to leave the game.

Game Thought's: (Carleton Place)

The Canadians with a great start to the game this afternoon, were all over the Patriots.  Scored early to start the game didnt get alot of great chances but carried most of the play in the opening frame.  Carleton Place allowed the Pats to come back in the 2nd but held their own before getting back on their heels in the 3rd.  The Canadians couldnt get out of their own end were lucky Toronto Lakeshore couldnt hit the net.  I thought Carleton Place played well at times si now 2-1 in the RBC Cup standings.  The Patriots tied the game late in the 2nd didnt seem to fase the Canadians as they come right back a minute later to re-grab the lead before scoring on the man advantage taking a 3-1 lead heading into the 3rd.  I think two back to back quick goals late in the 2nd period was the turning point.  This was a pretty non-hitting contest with very little intensity wich made for a pretty boring game with not much action at either ends of the rink.

On a side note, Im pretty dissapointed with the little selection of RBC Cup memorbilia at the RBC Cup.  Not a whole lot of selection and not a whole lot of nice looking t-shirts etc.  Its also pretty sad to see they have already sold out of the pucks and pins after just the first day.  I was expecting a much more selected veriety of RBC Cup merchandise to choose from.  Im also very dissapointed in the RBC Cup programs.  For $5 theres not really much inside, other then the team pictures-rosters.  No history on the RBC Cup or any of the Lakers-Vipers six National Championships or even anything on the 1990 Centennial Cup when it was back in Vernon.  Very dissapointed.
