Castlegar Crunchers Create Viper Win

Two long-time buddies from Castlegar, Ryan Renz and Aaron Hadley, were instrumental in a Viper 4-3 overtime win over the visiting West Kelowna Warriors on Saturday.

Renz scored the winner at 2:35 of the first overtime period and Hadley twice tied the game in the third period. Their heroics offset a strong performance by David Pope, who figured in all three Warrior scores.

After Adam Tambellini had opened the scoring at 10:04 of the first period on a crisp feed from Aaron Hadley, Pope notched his first goal at 18:14. He one-timed a rocket into the top corner following a decisive faceoff win by Shawn Hochhausen during a Warrior power play.

Pope scored an identical goal from another Hochhausen crisp draw at 3:12 of the third period to give the visitors a 2-1 lead. He then contributed an assist on Seb Lloyd's power play marker at 7:34 of the third. Lloyd was left alone to the right of Danny Todosychuk's crease.

However, in between the two Warrior third period goals Aaron Hadley tipped in Brett Corkey's point shot for a power play score at 5:42.

Hadley was again a force at 15:59. He intercepted a pass at centre ice, cut wide right, beat two Warrior defenders to the net and put the puck over Tyler Briggs's right shoulder.

Like Hadley, Ryan Renz would not be denied on the OT winner. He corralled a loose puck at the top of the left faceoff circle, bulled his way to the net and jammed a backhand through Briggs's pads.

In a well played game that saw the Vipers lead in shots (37-31) and in scoring chances (20-12), the Warriors were opportunistic on the power play.  Despite giving up a combined seven goals, Tyler Briggs and Danny Todosychuk played well in their respective nets.

On the next shift after the Tambellini opening goal, the Vipers scored again. However, Logan Mick, who had been checked into the Warrior goal, was still behind Briggs when TJ Dumonceaux's shot entered the net. After consulting with his linesmen, referee Dexter Rasmussen disallowed the goal.
