IceGators Announce Two Big Signings!
By: Louisiana IceGators
Louisiana IceGators Head Coach Kevin Kaminski announced Friday, in a live interview on Sports Radio ESPN 1420 am, the signings of forwards Matt Miller and Robert Short. With the addition of Miller and the re-signing of Short, the Louisiana IceGators look like they are putting together what just might be their best line up the since returning in 2009.
Miller, is no stranger to the brass of the IceGator organization. In the 2010-2011 season, he played alongside IceGators General Manager Louis Dumont and under Coach Kevin Kaminski with the Mississippi RiverKings (CHL), before going to the Dayton Gems (CHL) to finish out the year.
At 6’0”, 195 lbs., Miller loves to play with that “greasy, grit” style of hockey Coach Kevin Kaminski loves. A native of Sioux Lookout, Ontario, Matt will come to Louisiana in October with quite a hockey resume. Miller started his junior career in 2001 and played for 4 years between the OJHL (Ontario Junior Hockey League) and the SIJHL (Superior International Junior Hockey League). Since beginning his pro career in 2005, Matt has played in 377 games between the UHL (United Hockey League), CHL, EIHL (Elite Ice Hockey League), and FHL (Federal Hockey League) where he posted 241 points and 879 penalty minutes. Last season Miller played for the New Jersey Outlaws (FHL) along with recent IceGator signee Brett Liscomb where the two won a championship.
“Millsy is a player who is explosive and thrives on his speed,” said Kaminski. “He not only creates so many opportunities with his speed but, it allows him to get on the fore check and punish their D with big hits.” “As he loves to hit,” Kaminski added. “Matt has a great attitude and always has a smile on his face. He loves the game and leads his team by example with his work ethic.”
Returning to the IceGators for his third season will be Coldstream, British Columbia native Robert Short. Coach Kaminski feels Short’s signing will add depth up front for the team. “He’s a big power forward with deceptive speed, a quick release, and has a knack to score big goals,” stated Coach Kaminski. “Shorty is able to play in any situation you put him in, the only thing he needs is to be a little more consistent in the physical aspect of the game to make more room for himself.”
After playing four years of junior with the Vernon Vipers of the British Columbia Hockey League (BCHL), the 6’, 200lb, forward began his professional career in 2010 with the Pensacola Ice Flyers. He would play 26 games with the Ice Flyers before coming to the IceGators to finish out the season with 8 goals, 16 assists for 24 points on the season. This past season (2011-2012) was an impressive one for Short as he would almost double his points from the previous year by netting 26 goals and assisting on 21, for 47 points on the year.
