For anyone who could not attend or watch tonight’s Vipers game here are my
thoughts and views from tonight’s game. You may agree or disagree but we all
have our own view and opinion on any game we watch. This is my opinion and my
thoughts on how I saw tonight’s game. I try to be unbiased and give a fare recap
on both sides. Thanks for stopping by & visiting my blog.
I was at tonight's BCHL exhibition game as Vernon defeated Salmon Arm 3-1 at the Wesbild Centre.
Starting Goaltenders:
Vernon: Danny Todosychuk
Salmon Arm: Colin Dzijacky
1st Period: The Vipers would open the scoring early after a hard fought battle along the side wall. Colton Sparrow and Adam Tambellini with some hard work got the puck out to Aaron Hadley who walked in from the goal line before going upstairs over the blocker of Colin Dzijacky giving Vernon the 1-0 lead. Tambellini and Sparrow collected the helpers. On the next shift within twenty to thirty seconds later the Vipers had a great chance with a three on one Riley Hunt fed Jedd Soleway who fired a hard low shot that missed the net, back come the Silverbacks on the same play with a nice rush got the play in deep with some good pressure setup Josh Bowes who snapped a quick shot from in close was stopped by Danny Todosychuk who made a quick pad save kicking out a big rebound. Salmon Arm kept up the pressure and it paid off after Travis Stephens assisted on Garrett Hendrickson's goal at 8:26 as the game was tied 1-1 Stephens with the lone assist. The Vipers with another odd man rush come up with another scoring chance as Robin Landon and TJ Dumonceaux on the two on one, Dumonceaux shot but was stopped by Dzijacky who made a nice pad save. Vernon would get the games first powerplay and capitalize after Ryan Renz's point shot was tipped in front by Colton Sparrow at 15:49 giving the Vipers a 2-1 lead. Renz and Brett Corkey with the assists. Just shortly after Colton Sparrow with a bad turnover in his own end gave the Backs two real good scoring opportunties after Jeff Kennedy with a quick snap shot from the circle was stopped by Danny Todosychuk and then Shane Hanna beat Todosychuk but hit the post. The play became fairly scrambly in the last three to four minutes of the period with alot of dull play. Both teams with some good chances made for a fairly even played period. At the buzzer some pushing and shoving occured deep in the Backs zone before the minor altercation was broken up. Vernon was up 2-1 after 20 minutes of play. The Silverbacks outshot the Vipers 15-13.
2nd Period: Salmon Arm got their first powerplay just a few minutes into the middle frame with some pressure the Backs couldnt find the game tying goal as Vernon killed off the minor. Shortly after the Vipers would take a 3-1 lead after Jedd Soleway with some hard work setup Craig Martin in front who beat Colin Dzijacky. Soleway and Brett Corkey with the assists. Just shortly after Vernon would get their second powerplay of the night with some good pressure the Vipers couldnt manage to get any real quality shots through. The Silverbacks would kill off the minor but the Vipers kept the pressure coming and for atleast the next eight to ten minutes took it too Salmon Arm and out played the Backs getting some real good chances. Colton Sparrow with a great chance in close, TJ Dumonceaux with a breakaway was stopped by Colin Dzijacky who made a nice pad save. Mitch McAllister was stopped in close, Adam Tambellini with a good chance all couldnt beat Dzijacky who played very well tonight. Jedd Soleway who had lots of energy and competed hard was battling strong all night also come up with atleast two chances down low. The Silverbacks who couldnt clear the zone were being hemmned in their own end for several minutes before finally clearing the zone. After a few icing calls Troy Mick was forced to call a timeout and settle his team down. The Vipers with all kinds of pressure were unable to capitalize as Salmon Arm was badly outplayed for most of the period. The Backs managed to get a few chances late but it stayed 3-1 Vernon after 40 minutes of play. The Vipers outshot the Silverbacks 10-8.
3rd Period: Both teams were fairly even at the start of the third before the Silverbacks had a few good chances. Danny Todosychuk had to be sharp after making back to back pad saves off Brandon Mistal and Josh Ellis. TJ Dumonceaux with a burst of speed down the left wing ripped a hard shot that was stopped by Dzijacky. Jedd Soleway alone in the slot ripped a hard shot high and just over the crossbar. Salmon Arm would get a powerplay and come close to coming within a goal after Sean Flanagans point shot beat Todosychuk but went off the post. The Silverbacks with some good pressure couldnt find the back of the net. The Backs would get a very late two man advantage with just four seconds remaining on the first powerplay. The Vipers would kill off the first penalty and then kill off the second minor but not after some good pressure from Salmon Arm. Former Vipers defenceman Bennett Hambrook took a hard hit along the side wall and look in a little pain going straight to the Silverbacks bench. I didnt see him return and then late in the game Garrett Hendrickson would leave the ice with wich looked like a ankle or knee injury as he slowly hobbled off the ice. With about two and a half minutes remaining Salmon Arm would get a late powerplay, the Backs would get Colin Dzijacky to the bench for the extra attacker. Again with some good pressure and good goaltending from Danny Todosychuk the Silverbacks couldnt find the back of the net. Colton Sparrow and Aaron Hadley on a two on one, Sparrow decided to shoot and miss the empty cage while the Vipers missed the empty net on atleast three long dump in plays. In the end the Vipers would kill off the minor and wind the clock down before Brendan Kennedy and Kevin Guiltinan exchanged words before taking a swing at one another with each others sticks before the linesmen had to get involved. Both players were tossed from the game as both benches then started exchanging words. In the dying seconds Brayden Sherbinin's point shot was kicked out by Todosychuk who made a nice pad-tow save just before the buzzer as the Vipers would knock off the Silverbacks 3-1. Salmon Arm outshot Vernon 13-7.
Top Players: (Vernon)
Mitch McAllister who has impressed me all Training camp-pre season once again played with alot of energy and competed hard. This kid has some wheels and never gives up, always involved in and around the play. One of the hardest working kids on the Vipers this year so far.
TJ Dumonceaux played well tonight playing with some energy, getting a few good chances tonight.
Jedd Soleway (1 assist) Was the Vipers best player tonight. Soleway who is playing in just his second pre-season game after an injury in Training camp competed and battled hard all night. Created and generated some good scoring chances. Really made things happen tonight.
Danny Todosychuk (35 saves) who is fighting with Joe Young for the backups job played very well tonight. Needs a little more work on his rebound control but come up with a few real nice saves tonight.
Game Thoughts: (Vernon)
The Vipers finish the exhibition season with a 2-1-2 record and now open up the 2012-13 BCHL regular season next Saturday afternoon in Chilliwack vs the Penticton Vees. I dont think either team played there best tonight but I thought the Vipers did show me alot of good signs tonight. I really liked there second period and how they really battled and competed all night. I thought they had several good scoring chances but need to work on there passing, alot of missed passes and a few turnovers in their own end. Overall I thought Vernon was the better of the two teams.
Top Players: (Salmon Arm)
Brendan Kennedy played well on the Backs blueline. Was involved in the play at times and played with an edge, got involved in a few after the whistle activities.
Sean Flanagan also played well for the Salmon Arm defence. Had a good chance in the 3rd with the man advantage to get the Backs within a goal but hit the post.
Shane Hanna also impressed me tonight on the Salmon Arm blueline.
Josh Bowes looked fairly good up front.
Colin Dzijacky (27 saves) Played very well tonight. A big kid that is quick on his feet plays with alot of confidence and looks calm between the pipes. Made several good saves through out tonights game giving his club a chance to win.
Game Thoughts: (Salmon Arm)
The Silverbacks finish the pre-season with a 0-2-1 record. I thought Salmon Arm looked and played much better last night. Yes they did create and generate alot more scoring chances tonight over last night but I didnt think they looked as sharp or play as well defensively tonight. For most of the night the Backs looked out of position and very disorganised. There goaltending kept them in the game and gave them a chance to fight back and stay in the hockey game. At times both teams looked a little scrambled and were maybe clutching their sticks too tight.
