Moore stifles vipers again

In Salmon Arm Saturday evening, the Silverbacks beat the Vernon Vipers 4-1, the same score as the previous evening.
Kris Moore was steady and occasionally spectacular in goal for the ‘Backs, who were out shot 34-13 by the Vipers. Moore was especially strong in the third period, as the Vipers fired 17 shots at the 20-year-old Camrose Kodiak castoff.
His best save came when Viper defencemen Malcolm Lyles and Elliott Richardson rushed into the Silverback zone with one defender back. Lyles drew the defender to him and dished to Richardson at the left side of the crease. Moore read the play and stacked his pads to deny Richardson a short handed goal.
Other than Moore’s heroics, the Silverbacks won the game because they took advantage of their limited chances. Their first goal came early in the first period, on the power play.
Brett Knowles spotted David Killip alone in the left faceoff circle. Killip one-timed a low shot just inside Blake Voth’s left goal post at 1:39. His goal was identical to many that Mark Zengerle had scored from that same spot many times in the past two years.
Then the Silverbacks got a break 24 seconds after the Killip goal. On the right wing, Bryce Gervais attempted a simple dump in. The puck took a strange bounce and slipped by Blake Voth, who had gone to the side of the net to collect the disk.
At that point, Mark Ferner called a timeout, which allowed his young troops to collect themselves. For much of the remainder of the game, the Vipers had the edge in play. All the stats – faceoff wins, scoring chances, hits, shots on goal – favoured the Vipers, except for the critical stat, goals scored.
Salmon Arm increased the lead to three at 2:30 of the second period. Bryce Gervais dispossessed Philip Patenaude at the Viper blue line and went in with Josh Manson, who stuffed the puck in at the right side of the net.
The fourth goal came late in the third period, just after a Viper penalty had expired. From the low slot, Cody Michelle picked the corner over Voth’s right shoulder at 17:40.
The only Viper goal came at 7:32 of the third, when Aaron Hadley notched his first BCHL marker on a nice feed from Bryce Kakoske. Until that moment, Moore had stymied the Vipers for nearly five straight periods.
Hadley was part of the Vipers’ best line with centre John Knisley and left winger Mike Zalewski, who played together last year with the Syracuse Stars, from the same part of New York State as Mark Zengerle. Zalewski was the game’s second star.
Third star Bryce Gervais is one of four Silverbacks to come from the Prince Albert Mintos AAA midget program. Gervais, Cody Michelle, and Taylor Fauchoux were the Mintos’ top three scorers last year. Josh Manson, the bruising winger, joined Salmon Arm last year. They were all recuited by Rylan Ferster, the native of Prince Albert who left the Silverbacks this year to coach and manage the Revelstoke Grizzlies.
Game Notes:
• First line centre Dylan Walchuk was ejected in the first period for checking from behind.
• Injured Vipers Adam Thompson and Kyle Murphy missed the game, along with healthy scratch, Gus Correale. Colton Sparrow took Correale’s spot.
• The Silverbacks did not dress forwards Morgan Zulinick, Chris Hoe, and Josh McKissock.
• Kris Moore has a sparkling 96.72 save percentage in his two games versus the Vipers.
• The biggest hits of the game were issued by the Silverbacks’ Jayson Reardon and the Vipers’ Malcolm Lyles.
