Persley assigned to Penticton

It was a case of too much depth up front and not enough minutes for Brendan Persley.
The Vernon Vipers assigned the gritty 16-year-old forward to the Penticton Lakers of the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League this week so he could earn a regular shift.
He had been a healthy scratch in half of the Snakes’ first 12 B.C. Hockey League games.
“Brendan needs to play every night and we couldn’t guarantee that,” said Vipers’ head coach Mark Ferner. “Being a 16-year-old, it doesn’t do him any good sitting in the stands every other night.”
The 6-foot-1, 205 pounder recorded 13 penalty minutes in six games with the Snakes. The Kelowna product quickly earned a reputation for playing with an edge, always looking to rattle the opposition by finishing his checks.
The Vipers began a three-game road swing Thursday night in Quesnel versus the Mills. Vernon faces the Timberwolves tonight in Williams Lake and battle the Prince George Spruce Kings in a Sunday matinee.
Former Viper Sahir Gill, who bolted to the U.S. Hockey League Chicago Steel after a great rookie season in Vernon, leads the Steel with 2-7-9 in four games. The Steel have two sons of retired NHLers on their roster – Alex Krushelnyski (Mike) and Jake Chelios (Chris).
