At least Vernon Vipers’ forward Connor Jones knows who one of his linemates will be at the World Junior A Hockey Challenge, Nov. 1-8 in Summerside, P.E.I. He and twin brother Kellen were named to the 22-man Canada West roster for the six-team tournament.
They’ll learn the identity of their other linemate after Canada West flies east on Oct. 26 for a pre-tournament camp, including a pair of exhibition games against Belarus and U.S. on Oct. 29 and 30 respectively. Canada East, Sweden and Russia round out the competition.
The Joneses are two of 11 B.C. Hockey League players named to the team. Alberta and Manitoba each have four players, with Saskatchewan (2) and Ontario-based SIJHL completing the roster.
After collecting a combined 13 points in their first 10 BCHL games – the Jones boys traditionally take a few weeks to get going – Connor (7+4) and Kellen (2+8) have exploded for 21 points in the four games since.
“They weren’t putting up the numbers they would have liked to, but they work so hard it was just a matter of time,” said Vipers’ head coach Ferner.
“I’ve talked with Rylan (Ferster, Canada West head coach) a number of times, and he’s seen them play and knows what they can do. They’ll represent Canada West and the Vernon Vipers very well.”
Ferster, also the GM of the BCHL Salmon Arm SilverBacks, knows the effect the Jones brothers can have on a game. The speedy duo played a crucial role as the Vipers ushered the SilverBacks out of the Interior Conference final last season.
“They come from a great program and they’re both character guys,” said Ferster. “I can’t ever remember playing a game against Vernon and thinking they had a bad game. They are difference makers.
“The way they play forces them to be leaders. I don’t know if they are raw-raw guys in the dressing room, but when your two best players are working that hard – blocking shots, making hits – that’s going to be infectious.
“We’re really hoping we’ll be a team that’s eager to sacrifice for one another...a hardworking group that is willing to pay the price.”
While disappointed to be missing at least five B.C. Hockey League games, Connor says it is a great opportunity to represent Canada and compete on an international stage.
“They expect big things from us and expect us to be leaders on the team...the same as we do in Vernon. He (Ferster) wants his guys to work hard and they brought us in for a reason.”
