The Vernon Vipers are excited to announce that Connor and Kellen Jones will be playing for Team Canada West at the World Junior A Challenge. The Jones twins went to the evaluation camp in Okotoks back in September and found out earlier this week that they were selected to the Canada West roster. When asked about how they felt about when they heard the news Connor said “We were very excited and happy and we both feel very honoured to play for Team Canada West”

The 2009 World Junior A Challenge takes place in Summerside, P.E.I. from November 1-8 at Credit Union Centre and will follow the same format as previous years – two Canadian entries will be joined by four international teams. Canada West captured the silver medal in 2008, the first time since the tournament started in 2006 that it failed to capture the gold medal. Kellen commented on what they plan on bring to the team, “We saw the game last year on T.V. and we definitely want to help Team West win gold and we just want to help out offensively and defensively just like we do here in Vernon”

Jason Williamson, Vipers Assistant Coach, commented that “Connor and Kellen are very deserving to be on this team. They are two of the hardest working players and have had great success in there junior careers.” When asked about how it will affect the team as they will miss six BCHL games while they are in Summerside, Williamson said, “Obviously when you lose two of your best players its tough, but I think we have a deep enough team that we will be fine when they are gone. It will be a great opportunity for some other players to step up their play.” He also added that “It’s great for the team to have two players selected. We know they will represent our organization extremely well. We are very proud or Connor and Kellen.”

The Vernon Vipers would like to congratulate Connor and Kellen and look forward to watching them play at the 2009 World Junior A Challenge.

Canada West will play in Group A at the 2009 World Junior A Challenge, joined by Russia and Sweden, while Canada East, Belarus and the United States will comprise Group B. Round-robin play will run until Thursday, November 3, with both semi-finals taking place on Saturday, November 7. The gold medal game, which will be shown nationally on TSN/RDS, the official broadcasters of Hockey Canada, is set for Sunday, November 8 (check your local listings)
