Dale Purinton was a winner in his debut as Cowichan Valley Capitals' coach Saturday night.
The former National Hockey League, American Hockey League and ECHL enforcer, who took over when Scott Robinson was fired earlier in the day, led the Caps to a 4-2 B.C. Hockey League victory over the Trail Smoke Eaters at Cowichan Arena.
Fans attending the game expecting to see a match-up between Robinson and his former assistant Jim Ingram, who's in his third season as the head man in Trail, were instead intrigued by the appearance of Purinton behind the bench for the first time.
Caps' president Dr. Ron Smith said the coaching change had only been decided upon earlier that day so fans were caught unawares as they entered the building.
But the news quickly spread around the arena and there was a buzz to see how the Caps would react to the change.
"They came out with a high energy kind of game,'' observed Smith. "The kids played very hard and managed to keep that energy level up for the best part of three periods.''
The Caps were under the gun a bit during the early stages of the third period, but were bailed out by some big saves by Alexandre Peck.
Valley product Sean Nugent tied the scored with only 8:49 remaining for Trail, but two other valley players on either side factored in the final outcome.
Chase Kaiser of the Caps beat Kiefer Smiley in the Trail net for the game-winner with only 4:17 left in regulation time.
Kaiser has two goals for the Caps while singles came from Sanfred King and captain Joey Massingham, who iced the win into an empty net with 45 seconds remaining.
The Caps moved Purinton into Robinson's place from the Cowichan Valley Midget AAA team.
Smith said the team took into account Purinton's checkered past as a player and lack of coaching experience before deciding to give him the job for the remainder of the season.
"We knew this was a little riskier and he certainly came up with all the right answers in the interview,'' said Smith.
The Caps are up against Salmon Arm Sunday at 5 p.m. at Cowichan Arena.
