The Cowichan Valley Capitals have made a coaching change.
President Dr. Ron Smith announced Saturday the Caps have relieved Scott Robinson of his duties with the B.C. Hockey League club. He is being replaced by former National Hockey League player Dale Purinton for the remainder of the season.
Robinson was into his seventh season behind the Caps' bench.
"We felt the organization needed a change,'' stated Smith in a press release. "We just felt the team was not responding the way they should be.
"This is a very difficult decision, one of the toughest in our history. Scott is a true professional and has given our club great service. We appreciate all that Scott has done for the organization, applaud him for his successes and wish him nothing but the best with his future.”
The Caps recently suffered their worst loss in club history, falling 14-0 to the Vipers in Vernon during their Interior Conference road trip.
The Caps only had three returning forwards, with the recent addition of Anthony Perdicaro from Wheeling of the ECHL, and started the season 4-9-1.
Purinton, 33, played four years in the NHL with the New York Rangers and was most recently a member of the ECHL's Victoria Salmon Kings. Known as an enforcer during his playing days, Purinton was coaching the Cowichan Valley Midget Capitals to start the 2009-10 season.
"I think the measure of a coach is getting the most out of your players and preparing them for a chance to win every night,'' noted Smith in his statement. "We are confident that Dale is more than capable.''
