Kane's hat-trick smothers Smoke Eaters

Kory Kane marked his birthday week by pulling a hat-trick Friday night as the Vernon Vipers ambushed the Trail Smoke Eaters 7-1 in B.C. Hockey League action before 1,030 fans at the Cominco Arena.
Kane, 19, scored three times in the first period, once shorthanded, as the Vipers improved to 3-0. The same two teams played Saturday night at Wesbild Centre.
“He just moved his feet and shot the puck,” said Vipers’ head coach Mark Ferner. “He needed that. He loves scoring goals and that will certainly boost his confidence.”
Kane, a Californian who had the dream job Friday of playing with Connor and Kellen Jones, recorded 20 goals last season. He opened the offence 3:44 in from the Jones twins and then got what proved to be the winner on an unassisted shorthanded goal 10 minutes later. Jonathan Milhouse and Stevie Weinstein, on the powerplay, completed Vernon’s first-period offence.
Braden Pimm and Bryce Kakoske supplied second-period goals for the Snakes, while Travis St. Denis replied for the 0-2 Smokies at 8:43 of the third period.
“We were moving our feet really well and we scored some goals by getting some pucks to the net,” said Ferner. “We wanted to get the puck down low behind their young defence and we did that.”
Graeme Gordon recorded 25 saves for the win, while starter Devon Murtagh, who went one period, and Garrett Beckwith, combined for 35 stops.
“It’s pretty tough when it’s 5-0 after one period, but no excuses, we need to be better,” said Trail coach Jim Ingram. “When your tender makes 12 saves on 17 shots, it’s pretty tough to win against anybody, let alone against Vernon.”
Ingram, who wasn’t about to rip his youthful troops after the loss, said the Vipers’ skill set didn’t surprise him.
“They’re an unbelievable team. We knew that going in. I saw a ton of good things so hopefully, we learned something last night.”
Asked if his club had suffered any injuries, Ingram chuckled and replied: “Just hearts and egos.”
The Vipers entertain the Quesnel Millionaires and Williams Lake Timberwolves next weekend.
