University of North Dakota head men’s hockey coach Dave Hakstol announced today that senior defenseman Chay Genoway has been named team captain for the 2009-10 season. Hakstol also announced that senior forwards Chris VandeVelde and Darcy Zajac have been named assistant captains.
“We have a high-impact, quality senior class,” said Hakstol. “Those three will be our captains, they will be our leaders and they will be the ones pointing the team in the right direction.”
Genoway was an American Hockey Coaches Association (AHCA) second-team All-American last season after scoring three goals and 29 assists for 32 points in 42 games. The Morden, Manitoba, native was named the Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) Defensive Player of the Year and earned All-WCHA first team honors. Genoway was also named to his second straight All-College Hockey News second team and was an ESPN the Magazine Academic All-America third team honoree, joining Karl Goehring as the only Academic All-Americans in program history.
Zajac is UND’s active leader in career games played with 125 and the Sioux are 13-0-2 all-time when the Winnipeg, Manitoba, native scores a goal. Last season Zajac played in all 43 games and reached career highs in points (17) and assists (12). He was also named to his second consecutive All-WCHA Academic team.
The Sioux open the 2009-10 season with an exhibition game on Oct. 4 against Manitoba at Ralph Engelstad Arena. The regular season gets underway with a non-conference home series against Merrimack Oct. 9-10.
