Mitch Andres scored his first BCHL goal and Anthony Yamnitsky was close to perfect stopping 24 of 25 for his 10th win as the Vernon Vipers defeated the Victoria Grizzlies 3-1 at Kal Tire Place.
The first period had a few ups and downs with both teams fighting to get momentum. The Vipers owned the momentum for the first 6 minutes as they got out to a 9-1 shot advantage. That proved important as Mitch Andres was able to score his first BCHL goal to make it 1-0. The Grizzlies responded well after that chipping into the shot deficit and testing Anthony Yamnitsky with a couple of chances. The Vipers settled down after that and really kept the Grizz to the outside. The period would conclude 1-0 Vernon.
The Vipers got a few big saves from Anthony Yamnitsky early in the period and that really seemed to spark the team. Just as a powerplay was expiring Niko Karamanis deflected in his 6th of the year to make it 2-0. Shortly after that Jagger Williamson kept a puck in, walked down the middle and ripped home his 10th of the year to make it 3-0, while the Vipers were up a man. The rest of the period was fairly defensive as the Vipers didn’t allow the Grizzlies much time and space into the zone. Shots finished relatively even, but the Viper PK was very solid killing off all 3 Victoria chances.
In the third, the Grizzlies pushed to cut into the deficit. A few more powerplays for Victoria generated some momentum, but as was the case all night long, the PK was slowing up the breakout of the Grizzlies and when Victoria got in, Anthony Yamnitsky was up to the challenge. On the final man advantage, the Grizzlies finally broke through following a phenomenal save from Yamnitsky, the puck found Justin Michaelian in the slot and he snapped home his 12th of the year. The Vipers snuffed out any more offensive chances and took home a 3-1 win for their 21st of the year.
The Vipers will wrap up the four game homestand on Wednesday when they host Coquitlam at 7pm
