Penticton 3 Vernon 2
For anyone who could not attend or watch tonight’s Vipers game here are my thoughts and views from tonight’s game. You may agree or disagree but we all have our own view and opinion on any game we watch. This is my opinion and my thoughts on how I saw tonight’s game. I try to be unbiased and give a fare recap on both sides. Thanks for stopping by & visiting my blog.
I was at tonight's Vipers-Vees game as Penticton defeated Vernon 3-2 in front of 3,326 fans at the South Okanagan Events Centre.
Starting Goaltenders:
Vernon: Danny Todosychuk
Penticton: Hunter Miska
1st Period: The Vees come out with good jump, good off to a quick start. A minute into the opening frame, Jack Ramsey setup Tyson Jost in front couldnt beat Danny Todosychuk on a great opportunity in the opening minute. Penticton with good pressure early, were moving the puck, getting pucks to the net creating chances in the early goings. Patrick Sexton jumped into the play, couldnt beat Todosychuk from the slot as the Vees were buzzing early. Almost three minutes in Colton McCarthy would get Vernon's best chance after being tripped on a parcial breakaway giving the Vipers the games first powerplay just minutes into the game. TJ Dumonceaux with a good look at the net, wired a hard low shot from the top of the circle in the dying minute of the man advantage couldnt beat Hunter Miska as the Vees would kill off the minor. Less then two minutes later Vernon would get their second look with the man advantage. Getting pressure and four shots on goal, Hunter Miska was sharp making some key saves as the Vipers were 0-2 with the PP. Just over eight minutes into the 1st period and Vernon was outshooting Penticton 7-3 at this point. After killing off back to back Vernon powerplays, two and a half minutes later the Vees would get their first look with the PP. Getting a few good shots but not alot of puck possession the Vipers with a good penalty kill killed off the penalty. On the following shift Thomas Aldworth was sprung for the parcial breakaway couldnt beat Miska who was ready to play tonight. Both teams were very evenly matched from here on in until the buzzer as the play was fairly even going back and fourth. Each club was able to generate some zone time in each others end. With five minutes remaining Matt Serratore ripped a quick shot from the left circle forcing Danny Todosychuk to make a quick snag with the leather keeping this game scoreless. A minute later Dakota Conroy who was acquired from the Vipers for Liam Finlay walked in untouched from the high slot before wiring a shot from in close couldnt beat the Vipers goaltender who made tow big saves late in the period. Penticton gained some momentum late and finished the 1st with a good attack in the final few minutes. The Vipers back on their heels a little were caught admiring the Vees passing plays as Penticton was pressing in the final minute. Pat Newell setup Tyson Jost who was able to walk in beat Danny Todosychuk in close giving Penticton a 1-0 lead at 19:34 Newell & Jack Ramsey picked up the assists. It was 1-0 Penticton after 20 minutes of play. The Vees with a good start, had good pressure, got two or three good chances in the opening few minutes before the Vipers would get back to back powerplays couldnt capitalize. Both goaltenders played well as both teams played well in a fairly even played opening period. Penticton outshot Vernon 16-15.
2nd Period: In the opening minutes Jagger Williamson and Mackenzie Bauer with two good chances in close couldnt beat Vees starting goaltender Hunter Miska who was down and out. The Vees come right back with a strong push back. With a strong forecheck Connor Chartier couldnt beat Vipers starting goaltender Danny Todosychuk with a backhand from in close, making a big pad save keeping this a one goal game. Vernon couldnt clear the zone, turned over the puck twice inside the defensive zone before Dakota Conroy gave Penticton a 2-0 lead at 2:36 Dante Fabbro and Lewis Zerter-Gossage with the helpers. Three minutes later the Vees would get their second chance with the PP, the first of the 2nd period. Former Vernon Vipers forward Demico Hannoun alone in front, was stopped by Todosychuk. The Vipers with a good PK killed off the minor. It was all Vees early and often as Vernon couldnt get much of anything going as Penticton really using their speed and skill had all kinds of puck possession and zone time carried the majority of the play. The Vipers with very little puck possession werent in the offensive zone much in the first half. Danny Todosychuk had to be sharp kept the Vipers in the game were still down two goals. Just before the midway mark Liam Finlay on an odd man rush beat Hunter Miska but couldnt beat the post. Brandon Egli joined the attack, pounced on the rebound couldnt beat the Vees goaltender who come up with a huge save off Finlay's shot keeping the Vipers off the scoreboard. Two and a half minutes later Penticton would get a four minute powerplay after Liam Coughlin's double minor. Vernon with a very good penalty kill, once again got some key saves from Danny Todosychuk were able to excape and kill off the double minor. This was huge and a turning point in the game as now still down two goals and not three or four Vernon seemed to build off this PK slowly worked their way back into this hockey game. The Vipers now in the offensive zone were coming on in the second half, looked much better as the period went on. Vernon with good pressure had some looks at the net before getting a late powerplay. Moving the puck around, Viper captain Riley Guenther setup Thomas Aldworth who ripped a wicked shot high past Miska getting Vernon on the board at 17:39 cutting the Vees lead to just a goal. Guenther and former Penticton Vees forward Liam Finlay collected the assists. Less then a minute later the Vees would get a late man advantage that lasted all of five seconds before taking a minor penalty of their own sending both teams to four on four to finish the 2nd period. It was 2-1 Penticton after 40 minutes of play. The Vipers had two real good opportunities in the opening minute couldnt get the puck past Hunter Miska who played very well this evening. Miska with two big saves in the opening minute before a Viper turnover put Penticton up by two goals. The Vees gained momentum carried the better of the play for most of the first half before the Vipers turned the table, getting some life and momentum after two big penalty kills were able to get a PP goal late to climb within a goal. Shots were even 11-11.
3rd Period: The Vipers come out with good jump off the opening faceoff. Liam Coughlin with a strong shift battled his way through the offensive zone in the opening minute put a shot through traffic couldnt beat Hunter Miska who somehow saw the puck, making a big save. Off the following shift a long dump in play from inside centre ice fooled Danny Todosychuk who went to make the routine glove save had the puck graize off the top of his glove going into the corner on a close play. The Vipers would get an early PP to start the 3rd had some good looks couldnt get any real sustained pressure as the Vees killed off the minor. Less then two minutes later Anthony Latina with a dump in forced Hunter Miska to come way out of his crease to play the puck, Latina pounced on the rebound firing a quick shot towards the net forced the Vees goaltender to react in a hurry made a huge pad save off Latina just got back between the pipes on time to make the big save. With the puck still in play, Penticton having troubles couldnt clear the zone on two different opportunities before coughing up the puck right to Latina who beat Miska tied the game 2-2 at 8:50 Latina with all the hard work on that shift forced the Vees into several turnovers tied the game. Latina's goal was unassisted. On the following play Demico Hannoun tried setting up Riley Alferd going to the net on an odd man rush couldnt connect on the pass. Just two minutes after Vernon's game tying goal Penticton would get a big powerplay couldnt capitalize after another solid penalty kill by the Vipers. Just thirty four seconds after killing the minor the Vipers couldnt clear the zone, turning over the puck allowed Lewis Zerter-Gossage to walk in went forehand, backhand beat Danny Todosychuk in close gave Penticton a 3-2 lead at 13:23 Steen Cooper & Mike Lee with the helpers. Todosychuk made a nice glove save off Jarod Hilderman keeping this a one goal game. Vernon with a good push back had several opportunities couldnt beat Hunter Miska who was on his game tonight. Miska with several big stops kept this a one goal game. The Vipers with lots of pressure late couldnt get one past the Vees netminder. Miska made a huge save off Brandon Egli from the point and Thomas Aldworth from the circle. Mark Ferner would call a late timeout before getting Todosychuk to the bench for the extra attacker with 1:09 remaining. Penticton was able to clear the zone three or four times didnt come close at a chance at the empty net would hang on for the 3-2 victory winning the season series 6-1. The Vees come off the bench to congratulate Hunter Miska before several players got a little carried away with several high fives doing some showboating at the end of the game. I thought the Vipers played a much better 3rd responded well had some good chances, were able to battle back down two goals tied the game at two couldnt hold off the Vees before a late charge to finish the game. Vernon carried the play at times this period, had a bit of a slight edge in play. A very entertaining period with chances at both ends. Hunter Miska was the difference. Vernon outshot Penticton 15-6.
Top Player's: (Vernon)
Mitch Meek played very well defensively, played a very smart but defensive game.
Riley Guenther (1 assist) Was another Vernon defenceman that I thought played well this evening. Guenther looked calm and cool on the backend all night.
Anthony Latina (1 goal) Had lots of jump in his game, scored the game tying goal in the 3rd played with alot of intensity, showed alot of emotion at times, worked hard and competed.
TJ Dumonceaux playing in his final regular season BCHL game in his final season with the Vipers played a strong, physical game, was skating hard all night, played with lots of jump and energy.
Thomas Aldworth (1 goal) Has really struggled as of late hasnt looked or been the same player the last month or so. Tonight I thought Aldworth showed signs of his former self, played a hard, intense game, really skated hard, outskated several Vees players for the puck, looked to be in the zone. Had some good looks-chances through out the game, didnt see much icetime in the 3rd until the final few minutes.
Liam Finlay (1 assist) One of three finalists up for the BCHL Rookie of the Year was another Viper that stood out for me. Really skating hard, played with alot of intensity, was going all night.
Danny Todosychuk (30 saves) Making his second straight start in his final season with Vernon played very well has suffered back to back losses to finish the regular season. Made some big saves through out the game, was good on the PK gave his team a chance to win.
Game Thought's: (Vernon)
The Vernon Vipers finish the BCHL regular season on a two game losing streak finish the season with a 36-18-1-3 record good enough for 2nd place in the Interior Division and currently tied with Chilliwack for 3rd overall in the league. With Vernon locking up 2nd place a while back, the Vipers have been basically playing the last month or so with none of these games meaning much other then team pride-stats etc. Where as teams below the Vipers have been fighting for their playoff lives. I thought Vernon played very well in a game that didnt mean much in the standings. Other then the first ten minutes of the 2nd period this was a very hard fought, entertaining hockey game. The Vipers fell down 2-0 but didnt quit, battled back tying the game before giving up the winner with just over six minutes to go. A few turning points I look back on, Vernon would get two early powerplays to start the game couldnt capitalize went 0-2 allowed the Vees to hang around, & give Penticton some momentum. If the Vipers score once or even twice on those two powerplays, this could be a different game. The second turning point was killing off the double minor in the 2nd period. With Penticton up 2-0 the Vees score once or twice and this game is basically over or else a long fight back. The Vipers kill off the double minor, get some life and momentum before scoring a late powerplay goal to end the period are now within a goal heading into the 3rd. I like Vernon's compete level, thought they played hard, battled and got lots of pucks to the net. I really liked the Vipers PK, was very good. A few turnovers in the defenzive zone cost them two goals. I thought the Vipers did a good job at containing some of the Vees more offensive threats. This was anybody's game. Nice to see the Vipers get out a fan bus to both Salmon Arm & Penticton for te final two regular season games. With a 5-1 Merritt win in Salmon Arm tonight, the Centennials clinch 3rd place meaning the Vipers & Cents will meet in the opening round of the playoffs.
Top Player's: (Penticton)
Gabe Bast played well on the Vees blueline. Was physical at times, good down low and in and around the net.
Demico Hannoun had a strong game vs his former team. Was going hard all night, created and generated offensive chances.
Dakota Conroy (1 goal) A bigger body was involved in the play, played well up front, had some looks at the net.
Tyson Jost (1 goal) I thought was dangerous at times, seemed to be in and around the Vernon goal often. Seems to know where the puck is. Really sees and reads the ice well.
Hunter Miska (39 saves) Improved to 6-1 vs Vernon this season was the difference. Miska made several key-big saves through out the game keeping his team in the game at times. Miska was the bussier of the two netminders saw alot more action. Has a very good-quick glove, quick on his feet, reads the plays well, plays his position well, was fighting pucks through traffic, made some big saves.
Game Thought's: (Penticton)
The Vees like Vernon are also basically playing with pride dont have alot of meaning in their games the last month or so standings wise will finish the regular season vs Salmon Arm tomorrow night. Penticton who has owned the Vipers all season finish with a 6-1 record over Vernon this season had to battle and fight hard for the win tonight. The Vees may have won six out of seven games over the Vipers this season but in all but maybe one game every game was down to the final buzzer. Other then the first half of the 2nd period this was a very evenly matched game with chances at both ends of the rink. Both goaltenders played very well. A bounce or call here or there and this game could have gone the other way. I thought the Vees capitalized on their chances, were very oportunistic tonight. Went out to a 2-0 lead before having to re-gain their lead and then hold onto the one goal game for the winner. Penticton just like Vernon broke down mentally in their own end a few times, cost them the game tying goal but managed to rally late scoring the winner with just over six minutes to go. A huge crowd on hand for the Vees second last regular season home game. With the Silverbacks loss tonight, the Vees are still awaiting their playoff opponent. West Kelowna & Salmon Arm are tied in points for the final playoff spot with both teams playing their final games of the regular season tomorrow night.

Fraser Rodgers Penticton Vees Blog,
https://pentictonvees.wordpress.com/

Ex Vernon Vipers Goaltender Hammond Records Back To Back Shutouts:
Former Vernon Vipers goaltender Andrew Hammond recorded his second straight shutout in back to back games as Hammond & the Ottawa Senators made 35 saves shutout the LA Kings 1-0 Thursday snapping the Kings eight game winning streak.
Hammond recorded his first career NHL victory in a 4-2 win over the Montreal Canadiens February 18th recorded his first career NHL shutout Wednesday in Anaheim. Hammond is now 4-0 in five games with Ottawa this season.
The Ottawa Senators recalled Hammond from the American Hockey League (AHL) Binghamton Senators on January 29th 2015. Hammond was in his second season with the Binghamton Senators before being called up to Ottawa where he attended the Senators development camp in July before being released from the Sens Training camp.
Hammond played parts of two years in Vernon (2007-2009) after coming over in a trade with the Surrey Eagles during the 2007-08 season. In 52 regular season games with the Vipers Hammond posted a (33-15-1) record recording 6 shutouts.

Hammond shutouts defending Champs
Thursday February 26th 2015
LOS ANGELES -- Andrew Hammond stood in front of the scrum of reporters and stated what everybody was thinking regarding his meteoric rise.
"It's obviously pretty crazy what's going on right now," Hammond said.
The first-year goalie made 35 saves for his second shutout in as many nights, Mike Hoffman scored in the third period and the Ottawa Senators ended the Los Angeles Kings' eight-game winning streak with a 1-0 victory at Staples Center on Thursday.
Hammond outdueled Jonathan Quick of the Kings, who made 27 saves. The 27-year-old has won all four of his NHL starts and stopped 131 of 136 shots since being called up because of injuries to starter Craig Anderson and backup Robin Lehner.
Hammond shut out the Anaheim Ducks and Kings on consecutive nights, and his win against Quick prompted another good one-liner.
"I don't think too many people expected a goalie battle between Quick and the Hamburglar tonight," Hammond said in reference to his nickname. "When you're playing someone like that and someone that you kind of watch; obviously he's close in age to me, but he's someone you look up to as an NHL goalie. He's won two Stanley Cups now. Whenever you can play a guy like that, it's obviously a pretty cool feeling."
The Senators (26-23-10) completed a back-to-back sweep of the Kings and Ducks by a combined score of 4-0. They have won five of six, moved within five points of the Boston Bruins, who hold the second wild-card playoff position in the Eastern Conference, and have a game in hand.
Hammond has quickly become a great story. His parents saw him play in person for the first time at Honda Center and they were in attendance in L.A. Will they make the trip for the game against the San Jose Sharks on Saturday?
"They weren't planning on it, but they might have to now," he said. "They seem to be pretty good luck charms."
The Kings (29-19-12) were attempting to tie a franchise record with their ninth consecutive victory, accomplished from Jan. 21-Feb. 6, 2010. They got a 6-on-4 advantage in the final two minutes and Hammond made a left pad save on Tyler Toffoli's shot in the slot off Marian Gaborik's pass.
Mika Zibanejad took an offensive zone hooking penalty to give the Kings the power play and, with an extra attacker, the two-man advantage.
"I wasn't very happy with that," Zibanejad said. "Scared. I mean, it's never a good thing. They have a good power play."
Ottawa ended Quick's shutout streak at 142:44 when Hoffman scored his 21st goal 1:40 into the third period. Zibanejad slipped behind the Kings defense on the right side and made cross-ice pass to Hoffman, who lifted the puck past an outstretched Quick. The goal was Hoffman's 21st, tying him with Filip Forsberg of the Nashville Predators for the most among rookies.
Ottawa coach Dave Cameron said he wasn't nervous during the final minute and was matter-of-fact about not being surprised by Hammond's play.
"No, I've been around a long time," Cameron said. "You know there's going to be push back. When you have a team sitting here at home that's an elite team, and you're on your back-to-back, you're going to be back on your heels at different times. That's why Hammond's performance was huge tonight."
On Wednesday, Hammond became the second goalie in Ottawa history to win each of his first three NHL starts and the first to do so in three straight starts when he shut out the Ducks 3-0. He more than held his own with Quick. Hammond made saves on Jeff Carter and Dwight King on a rush, and Quick stopped Cody Ceci in the second period.
The Kings went scoreless on four power plays but couldn't get a puck past Hammond. The Dwight King-Jeff Carter-Toffoli line combined for 13 shots.
It was a surprising loss considering the Kings have rounded into Stanley Cup form during their streak. They scored 26 goals during the eight-game streak.
"Tonight we had our fair share of looks," King said. "Their goalie was up to the task. We just have to find ways to get to the rebounds. Tonight that was a probably the big thing. There was quite a few kicking around and we couldn't get them in."
Ottawa had Curtis Lazar and Jean-Gabriel Pageau hit the post in the second, and the Kings had a goal waved off early in the period.
The Kings killed their 17th, 18th and 19th consecutive penalties.
Newly acquired defenseman Andrej Sekera did not play. He is expected to make his Kings debut against the Ducks in Anaheim on Friday.
Kings coach Darryl Sutter faulted his defense and cited a need for better offensive balance going into an important Pacific Division game.
"I thought our defense was really slow moving pucks and in the second we passed the puck to them," Sutter said. "It probably should have been 2-1 them after that and then in the third we just couldn't get the goal.
"Jeff Carter's line was really good, but I think that after that, it was pretty much zero."
Ottawa beat the Kings at Staples Center for the first time since Jan. 11, 2000. The Kings were 12-1 with one tie all-time against Ottawa at home.
Hammond recorded his first career NHL victory in a 4-2 win over the Montreal Canadiens February 18th recorded his first career NHL shutout Wednesday in Anaheim. Hammond is now 4-0 in five games with Ottawa this season.

Shiplo Commits To Quinnipiac:
This is in todays Morning Star Newspaper:
Shiplo commits to Quinnipiac
by Kevin Mitchell - Vernon Morning Star
Feb 27, 2015
Vernon Viper defenceman Luke Shiplo has verbally committed to play for the Quinnipiac University Bobcats beginning next NCAA hockey season.
“I flew down Sunday night and got a tour of the school Monday and it’s incredible,” said Shiplo, who de-committed from the Western Michigan Broncos last week. “The campus is beautiful with lots of green space and the school and facilities are high-tech. The rink reminds me of Vernon’s so it had a nice feel to it.”
Head coach Rand Pecknold picked Shiplo up at the airport and defensive coach Reid Cashman showed the Viper around the campus.
“I had meals with the players and got to meet them all,” said Shiplo, 19. “It was an awesome experience. It’s real exciting. I have to stay focused on the playoffs, but this is a real boost for my confidence.”
Shiplo leads all Viper blueliners in points with 44, including five goals. The Oakville, Ont. product was named Viper Defenceman of the Year at the awards night Friday at Kal Tire Place. He will sign a letter of intent with the Bobcats in April.
“Coming to Vernon was the best decision I ever made, for sure,” he said. “I’m having a great year so far and the team’s doing well so I couldn’t ask for anything more. You need to be given opportunties to gain confidence and that’s what the coaches have done with me. They strive for excellence every night; they’re an excellent coaching staff.”
Shiplo had one goal and eight points with the USHL Lincoln Stars last year and was recruited by former Viper head coach/GM Jason Williamson.
Meanwhile, Viper forward Liam Finlay is a finalist for Top Rookie in the BCHL, He, Brett Supinski of the Coquitlam Express and Brett Gruber of the Victoria Grizzlies are up for the Bruce Allison Memorial Trophy.
Finlay, who leads Vernon with 23 goals and 63 points, was named Viper Rookie of the Year last Friday.
“It could have gone to a few other guys, but it’s an honour,” said the Kelowna phenom. “There are a lot of great guys on this team and without them, I’d be nothing. The vets welcomed me here and the trade (from Penticton Vees) worked out great.”

Former Vipers Goaltender Hammond Records First Career NHL Shutout:
Former Vernon Vipers goaltender Andrew Hammond made 25 saves for his first career NHL shutout Wednesday in a 3-0 victory over the Anaheim Ducks. Hammond made his first career NHL start a week ago Wednesday vs the Montreal Canadians recorded 42 saves in a 4-2 win over the Habs for his first career NHL victory. Hammond has now played in four games this season with Ottawa is now 3-0 with wins over Montreal, Florida & Anaheim.
After four seasons with Bowling Green University Hammond signed his first pro contract with the Ottawa Senators on March 20th 2013. Hammond played last year as a rookie with the American Hockey League (AHL) Binghamton Senators. In 48 games with Binghamton Hammond went 25-19-3 with one shutout and a 2.81 GAA.
Hammond made his NHL debut last season was called up to the Ottawa Senators on February 27th 2014 vs the Detroit Red Wings. Hammond was the backup for Senators starting goaltender Robin Lehner that night but made his NHL debut after Lehner was pulled late in the 2nd period giving up six goals on fifteen Detroit shots. Hammond would finish the game playing just over thirty four minutes stopping all eleven Red Wing shots in a 6-1 loss to Detroit. Hammond attended the Chicago Blackhawks 2012 development camp and attended the Ottawa Senators 2013 development camp playing in a few exhibition games with the Senators last season. (no stats)
Hammond played parts of two years in Vernon (2007-2009) after coming over in a trade with the Surrey Eagles during the 2007-08 season. In 52 regular season games with the Vipers Hammond posted a (33-15-1) record recording 6 shutouts.

Hammond shuts down Ducks for another keepsake puck
Wayne Scanlan, Ottawa Citizen
Published on: February 26, 2015
ANAHEIM – Andrew Hammond has another puck for his trophy case.
This one for his first NHL shutout. To go with last week’s, for his first NHL win. Which is more special?
“I don’t know, ask me in the summer,” said Hammond, beaming in the visitors’ dressing room at the Honda Center. “I’m just trying to have fun with this.”
The Senators, led by their plucky new goalie, are having a ton of fun. And they’re less than awed by the better teams in the NHL.
That was apparent again on Wednesday as the Senators handled the Pacific Division-leading Ducks for the second time this season. After a 6-2 beat down in Ottawa in December, the Senators have outscored the Ducks by a combined 9-2 in the two games.
With the win, the never-say-never Senators pull to within seven points of the Boston Bruins for the final wild card spot in the east. Ottawa has two games in hand on Boston. The Senators have won three games in a row for the first time since Oct. 18, when they polished off a four-game winning streak in the second week of the season.
The mild-mannered Hammond continues to write a remarkable twist to a story that had been one of disappointment when he was in the American Hockey League, just another Binghamton Senators player enjoying a less than spectacular 2014-15 season.
Thrown into an emergency NHL start last week when Robin Lehner suffered a concussion, with No. 1 goalie Craig Anderson still out with a hand injury, Hammond has inexplicably reeled off three straight victories. In the process he has become the first goalie in Senators history to win three straight games in his first three NHL starts.
Hammond’s parents, Sandie and Marshall, drove in from Arizona for the game, and will also be in the stands when the Senators face the L.A. Kings Thursday.
“To have that happen tonight with them here makes it even more special,” Hammond said.
After beating the Montreal Canadiens and Florida Panthers, Hammond was sharp again here in Anaheim, although he was also well insulated by a Senators team that understands they don’t have Anderson back there to bail them out as he did earlier in the season.
“We’re trying to limit the prime scoring chances, and it’s giving us a chance to win,” said winger Mark Stone, who stole two pucks with his takeaway wizardry. Stone says the team is playing a more “clean” game in the neutral and defensive zones.
Hammond stopped all 25 shots and the visitors outshot the hosts 34-25 in a game they controlled for the most part. Hammond has given up just three goals in his three starts. Time to pick him up for your office fantasy pool?
The Senators seized a two-goal lead in the second period as they continued their solid road game, protecting Hammond and putting pucks into the Ducks zone. From the far wall, Mike Hoffman fired a quick shot that goaltender John Gibson kicked out, but Mika Zibanejad was right there to tap it home.
In the dying seconds of the third, Kyle Turris added an empty net goal.
Hammond didn’t have to wait long to get into the game. The Ducks buzzed around him on the opening shifts, and he had to turn back Getzlaf and Perry early on.
Later in the period, on an Anaheim power play, Hammond sprawled to his left to make a glove off Ryan Kesler, who had seemed to have a ton of space, albeit on a sharp angle.
It was the visitors who struck first, though. An Eric Gryba point shot nicked winger Erik Condra and tucked inside the far post past Gibson in the Ducks net. That was at 10:57 of the first period. Jean-Gabriel Pageau drew the second assist.
“We forechecked them really well, made it hard for them to come out of their zone,” Turris said, noting the play in front of both nets. “We’re trying to get screens in front of their goalies, make it hard on him to see the puck, but it also creates rebounds.
“We’re trying to collapse in front of Hammond to make sure there are no second and third chances.
“Every game we’re trying to build momentum and confidence. Back to back with L.A. is really tough. This gets the trip off to a good start.”

Silverbacks Stop Vipers In Drive For Playoff Spot:

Silverbacks stop Vipers in drive for playoff spot
Feb 25, 2015
Morning Star Staff
Check-till-ya-drop and look to Angus Redmond for big saves.
It’s a strategy working wonders for the Salmon Arm Silverbacks as they try and secure a playoff berth in the Interior Division of the B.C. Hockey League.
The Silverbacks, Merritt Centennials and West Kelowna Warriors shared third place with 62 points apiece after weekend play. Salmon Arm visited the Langley Rivermen Tuesday night in a highly winnable game.
Salmon Arm grounded the Vernon Vipers 4-2 before 1,700 fans Saturday night at the Shaw Centre.
Redmond pocketed 19 saves and has allowed just four goals in his last four games against the Snakes, who will finish second in the Interior and are waiting to see who places third and becomes their playoff partner.
Vernon opens the playoffs Tuesday night at home. Game 2 in the best-of-seven series goes the following night, also at Kal Tire Place. Games 3 and 4 will be Friday and Saturday night somewhere else in the Interior.
Veteran defenceman Jordan Burns, of Vernon, says the Gorillas are a calm bunch despite what’s on the line over the next five days.
“I think it’s (mindset) excitement rather than nervous,” said Burns. “The guys have confidence and we’re obvously anxious to play these final games and see what happens. We’re just concerned about what we’re doing; we’re not looking at who Merritt and West Kelowna have left.”
Salmon Arm, who barely missed the post-season dance last year, entertain the Cents Friday night at the Shaw Centre and finish the regular season Saturday night at the No. 6 nationally-ranked Penticton Vees.
The Cents host two last-place teams in the Surrey Eagles (tonight) and the Trail Smoke Eaters (Saturday). West Kelowna tangled with the visiting Smokies Tuesday night and then battle Surrey Saturday at Royal LePage Place.
The Silverbacks and Coquitlam Express are the hottest teams in the BCHL, going 8-2 in their last 10 tilts.
Redmond, who played just nine games two years ago as Adam Clark’s caddy, got in 29 games last season and is the definite go-to-guy with 47 appearances this campaign.
“We’ve got great defence,” said Burns, chosen second star in a 4-3 win over Alberni Valley Bulldogs Saturday night.
“If it’s not a powerplay goal, we don’t give up too many. Angus is playing unreal. He hasn’t let in any soft ones and he’s been really solid. The goals that do beat him are back door or two-on-ones where they make a nice pass. We have a lot of trust in him.”

Admirals Assign Ex Viper Noonan To Cincinnati Cyclones:
The American Hockey League (AHL) Milwaukee Admirals
have assigned former Vernon Vipers defenceman Garrett Noonan to the East Coast Hockey League (ECHL) Cincinnati Cyclones.
The Admirals assigned Noonan to Cincinnati on January 1st 2015 before sending Noonan back to Milwaukee on January 3rd 2015. In five games this season with the Cyclones Noonan is pointless.
Noonan attended the Nashville Predators development camp in July, before being released from the Predators Training Camp in October. In 33 games this season with Milwaukee Noonan has collected (4-goals-4-assists-8-points).
Noonan finished his fourth and final season at Boston University last year, signed a Entry-Level Deal with the Nashville Predators on April 22nd 2014 also signed an amateur try-out contract (ATO) with the American Hockey League (AHL) Milwaukee Admirals in April. Noonan was drafted by Nashville in Round 4 #112 overall in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft. In 34 games last season Noonan collected (4-goals-16-assists-20-points). Noonan played one season in Vernon (2009-2010) in 58 regular season games with the Vipers Noonan collected (2-goals-16-assists-18-points).

Admirals Reassign Three to Cincinnati

There were plenty of bodies in Admirals camp the day I attended practice on Tuesday. So much so there was an extra forward line plus an added forward and defenseman. Today the Admirals have cleared some of that up by reassigning Joe Pendenza, Frédérick Gaudreau, and Garrett Noonan to the Cincinnati Cyclones of the ECHL.
This move was sure to come when Kevin Fiala and Viktor StÃ¥lberg rolled into town. It’s the second stint down for Pendenza who has only played in one game for the Cyclones this season. It’s the first reassignment for Gaudreau who has been a healthy scratch for thirteen of the Admirals forty games played this season. As for Mr. Noonan, it is his second stint with the Cyclones. Similar to Pendenza, Noonan only logged one game before getting brought right back up.
I find it interesting to see that Pendenza and Gaudreau have been given the reassignment today over the likes of Zach Budish. It would appear the Minnesota native’s recent play has kept him around the AHL for a little bit. Though, for how the forward lines operate, Budish effectively is competing with Rich Clune, Triston Grant, and Mike Liambas for playing time at the moment.
Last night’s injury update on Johan Alm shed some light as to his current recovery. He is back to skating after missing the last nineteen games due to an “upper body” injury. There is no projected time table for Alm’s return, but the fact that he is back on the ice skating is a step in the right direction. Jonathan Diaby has really filled his role alongside Joe Piskula since Alm left the lineup and it has pushed Noonan on the outside looking in for minutes.

This is in todays Morning Star Newspaper:
Vipers honour Dumonceaux with MVP
by Kevin Mitchell - Vernon Morning Star
Feb 21, 2015
Their leading goal scorer didn’t get on the scoresheet. Their MVP earned one measly assist.
It was all fun and games Friday night as the Vernon Vipers torched the Trail Smoke Eaters 11-3 before a season-high 2,689 B.C. Hockey League fans at Kal Tire Place.
Rookie Jagger Williamson pocketed 2+3 and received the team’s Most Improved Player trophy in an on-ice awards ceremony following the Vipers’ final regular-season home tilt.
Thomas Aldworth, who has 36 snipes, and linemate TJ Dumonceaux – named MVP – didn’t have to do much as the Vipers showed their extreme depth against the last-place Smokies.
It was 3-3 when Jake Lucchini fired his second of the game and 33rd of the season for the Smokies at 7:56 of the second period, going top shelf on Jarrod Schamerhorn.
The Vipers then reeled off eight unanswered goals, including the winner by Williamson with 90 seconds left in the middle frame.
Williamson and fellow freshman Blaine Caton supplied snipes 31 seconds apart early in the third and the Vipers kept pressing, getting powerplay goals from Linden Hora, Michael Roberts and Colton McCarthy.
The fans went bonkers as Hora’s top-cheese snipe was announced. It was the popular rookie’s first goal, in his 50th game of the season. The Viper coaches put Hora on the top line with Dumonceaux and Aldworth, and had a designed play from practice to get him off the snide.
Anthony Latina fed a wide-open Hora in the low slot and he found nothing but net.
“It felt really good, getting the monkey off my back.,” said Hora, 18. “He (head coach Mark Ferner) just pretty much told me to stand in front of the net and just shoot.”
Said Viper captain Riley Guenther on Hora’s marker: “It was awesome. They were working on it in morning skate, talking to him before the game, just trying to get him excited so he could get his first one and it happened. That actually wasn’t the play. We had a five-on-three there. We set him up in the slot, Lats found him and he put it home. That’s a big one for him.”
Latina, with 2+2, McCarthy with 2+1, Riley Brandt and d-man Brandon Egli completed the attack as the Vipers stretched their win streak to five games. Vernon outshot the last-place Smokies 50-23 with rookie goalie Brett Clark having little chance on most Viper goals.
Vernon product Harlan Orr registered his 17th of the season for the Smokies just 72 seconds after Latina had given the Snakes a 1-0 lead 2:09 after the anthem.
McCarthy reached the 10-goal plateau with a pair of beauties in the third period. He redirected a slap pass from Brandt in front of the Smokie net, three minutes after a sweet coast-to-coast rush and deke on Clark’s doorstep.
Vernon improved to 36-16-1-3, 35 points in front of the Smokies, who had 10 just 10 forwards due to injuries and suspension.
The Snakes visited the Salmon Arm Silverbacks Saturday night and battle the first-place Vees next Friday night in Penticton to close the regular season. Vernon has clinched second place and will tangle with either Salmon Arm, West Kelowna Warriors or Merritt Centennials in the Division semifinal series.
Vernon product Colton Thibault scored once as Salmon Arm held off the visiting Alberni Valley Bulldogs 4-3, while Penticton iced the Cents 4-1 and West Kelowna stopped the Chilliwack Chiefs 6-3.
The Silverbacks, Cents and Warriors all had 60 points as of Saturday morning as they chase the fourth and final Interior playoff berth.
Dumonceaux, a 20-year-old Kelowna product, has 26 goals and 45 points in his third year with the Vipers. He also received the Wayne Buck Memorial award.
“I was surprised (winning MVP), but I’m happy with it for sure. It’s a big difference from last year and I hope we can keep it rolling for playoffs.”
Veteran goalie Danny Todoyschuk, who won the Community Service Award and the Blueliners Scholarship, loved the MVP selection.
“That would have been my pick too if they asked me,” said Todoyschuk. “He works his bag off on and off the ice and he’s a leader on and off the ice. He works hard every night, banging bodies and scoring goals so it was an easy choice.”
Guenther also liked the pick.
“He’s a huge part of our team, on and off the ice. He’s a great guy, he leads by example, works hard everyday in practice and in the gym. I can’t say enough about the steps he’s taken this year from last year have been huge.”
Ontario’s Luke Shiplo was named the Top Defenceman. He has 5-37-42.
“I’m his roommate and he’s just a great guy,” said Guenther, chosen Unsung Hero. “He came in here and really helped out our powerplay. He’s a great puck mover, moves his feet and really jumps into the play. He really rounds out our dee.”
Dynamo forward Liam Finlay took the Top Rookie trophy, while Brandt was Fan Favourite, Aldworth Most Sportsmanlike and d-man Mitchell Oliver Scholastic Player of the Year.

Salmon Arm 4 Vernon 2
For anyone who could not attend or watch tonight’s Vipers game here are my thoughts and views from tonight’s game. You may agree or disagree but we all have our own view and opinion on any game we watch. This is my opinion and my thoughts on how I saw tonight’s game. I try to be unbiased and give a fare recap on both sides. Thanks for stopping by & visiting my blog.
I was at tonight's Vipers-Silverbacks game as Salmon Arm defeated Vernon 4-2 in front of 1,697 fans at the Shaw Centre.
Starting Goaltenders:
Vernon: Danny Todosychuk
Salmon Arm: Angus Redmond
1st Period: Mackenzie Bauer off the opening faceoff would get a great look at the net, get a quick shot off from in close but couldnt beat Angus Redmond who made a big save off the opening draw. Just over a minute later Jagger Williamson on the Viper attack ripped a hard shot from the circle forced Redmond to make a big pad save as the Vipers with two good quality chances in the opening minute and a half. Vernon couldnt continue the pressure allowed the Silverbacks to get going as Salmon Arm slowly took over the play. Three minutes later Joshua Laframboise with a shot from the circle was stopped by Danny Todosychuk who made a big save off the rush, two minutes later Todosychuk was forced into making a quick glove save as both goaltenders were busy in the opening minutes. Vernon would get the games first two shots on goal before SA responded with four straight before the Vipers would go almost nine minutes without a shot on net. The Backs skating hard really moving the puck in a hurry were carrying the play. The Vipers with several turnovers inside their own end had troubles clearing the zone and getting through the neutral zone. The Silverbacks were doing a great job at shutting down Vernon's offence clogging up the neutral zone. The Vipers would get the games first powerplay just before the midway mark, getting pressure got off four good shots but couldnt capitalize as Angus Redmond was good on the penalty kill as Salmon Arm killed off the minor. Just as the penalty expired Brandon Egli with a brutal turnover in front of Danny Todosychuk allowed Carson Bolduc to scoop up the loose puck before missing an open cage as the Backs come very close to opening the scoring on a Vernon turnover. The Vipers went back on the powerplay, this time only managed one shot were now 0-2 with the man advantage as the Silverbacks come up with a good penalty kill. Taylor Maruya with a great opportunity with a minute to go in the opening period couldnt beat Todosychuk before the Vipers would get a scramble in front of the Backs crease were banging away at the loose puck had several cracks down low couldnt jam one home before the buzzer. It was 0-0 after 20 minutes of play. The Vipers with a good start to the game, had two good chances in the first minute and a half couldnt generate much until the final few seconds on a scramble in front of the Silverbacks net. Salmon Arm was really flying, skating hard, were strong on the puck, forced Vernon into several turnovers inside their own zone carried the better of the play and were the better of the two teams. The Backs with some good chances also couldnt cash in. Vernon outshot Salmon Arm 8-5.
2nd Period: Just sixteen seconds into the frame SA would get the games first goal. Off the opening draw Carson Bolduc setup Taro Hirose who ripped a low hard shot was stopped by Danny Todosychuk who kicked out a big rebound to a wide open Joshua Laframboise who spotted the back of the net giving Salmon Arm an early 1-0 lead at 0:16 Hirose & Bolduc collected the helpers. The Vipers a little slow to start the middle frame looked a little lackadaisical as the Backs jumped on Vernon early. The Vipers would catch a break and get an early PP their third of the night. The Vipers needed just over three minutes to get their first shot of the period before a shot from the point beat Angus Redmond but hit the post. Salmon Arm with another good penalty kill killed off the penalty. Less then two minutes later the Silverbacks would get their first shot with the man advantage. Phil Midleton's point shot went off a Salmon Arm player before bouncing off a Vernon d-man in front forced Vipers starting goaltender Danny Todosychuk to react quickly making a tough save with his shoulder. Still on the PP Thomas Plese spotted Taylor Maruya who was able to walk in untouched beat Todosychuk giving Salmon Arm a 2-0 lead at 7:55 Plese and Colton Thibault with the assists. Just past the halfway mark Shane Danyluk gave Luke Shiplo a shot to the head, as Shiplo went down was down for several minutes before slowly leaving the ice going straight to the Vipers dressing room and not returning. Danyluk was given two minutes for checking to the head and a ten minute misconduct. On the PP TJ Dumonceaux on a second opportunity down low went high glove over Silverbacks starting goaltender Angus Redmond getting Vernon on the board were down 2-1 at 13:09 Liam Finlay and Thomas Aldworth picked up the helpers. Less then a minute later tempers heated up in a hurry as a major scrum formed inside the Viper blueline as almost everyone on the ice minus the goaltenders got involved. Lots of pushing and shoving, punches were thrown and lots of chirpping exchanged between both teams. SA would come away with their second powerplay of the night-period but a good penalty kill by Vernon and the Vipers were able to kill off the minor. It was 2-1 Salmon Arm after 40 minutes of play. The Backs got the all important first goal and jumped on the Vipers early. Scoring just sixteen seconds into the frame gave the Silverbacks a 1-0 lead before jumping out to a two goal lead. Vernon slow and not showing alot of energy were outplayed for a second straight period. Both teams didnt generate or create much for chances before the Vipers would get on the scoreboard. Vernon with one powerplay goal struggling with the man advantage. The Vipers had some good looks at the net, but couldnt hit the net missing on several shots from in close. Salmon Arm playing with alot more jump and energy played with alot more grit and edge. Shots were even 5-5.
3rd Period: The Vipers come out with alot of jump and energy as Jagger Williamson with a great opportunity in the first minute and a half couldnt beat Angus Redmond who flashed the leather made a nice glove save from in tight. Vernon playing with alot more energy, was finally skating in the opening few minutes. The Backs would get an early PP and capitalize. Taylor Maruya's shot missed the goal come off the back boards right to Thomas Plese who beat Danny Todosychuk who come across the crease tried making the save couldnt stop Plese as Salmon Arm jumped out to a 3-1 lead at 7:06 Maruya and Phil Midleton with the assists. Less then two minutes later (AP) Ninoi Tetteh with a brutal turnover allowed Ross Heidt to setup Carson Bolduc giving Salmon Arm a 4-2 lead at 8:54 Heidt with the lone assist. This really took the life out of Vernon who now down by two couldnt seem to get much of anything going. SA playing a very physical game were really hitting the Vipers on every chance, were finishing their checks. With five minutes remaining Vernon would get another powerplay and get their second powerplay goal of the night. Colton McCarthy setup Jagger Williamson with a nice cross crease pass got Vernon within two were down 4-2 at 16:14 the intensity level raised as both teams got away with some ugly plays behind the play. Several high sticking calls were missed on both sides as both teams were doing alot of chirpping between the benches. Thomas Aldworth and Anthony Latina were doing alot of yapping back and fourth between the two benches as the Backs got under Vernon's skin. Williamson's goal seemed to give some life into the Vipers as Vernon responded with a good push for the final few minutes. With good pressure the Vipers had some good looks couldnt hit the net or beat Angus Redmond. Thomas Aldworth come very close to making this a one goal game couldnt beat Redmond down low after making a huge pad save with 1:41 to go before Riley Brandt alone inside the circle went high but just over the top bar missing the net. Tempers would once again heat up with just six seconds remaining as again lots of pushing and shoving, lots of trash talking on the ice and between both benches as these two teams dont like one another. Riley Brandy and Colton McCarthy were both tossed from the game before the final buzzer. Salmon Arm would come away with a hard fought victory 4-2 taking the regular season series 4-3-1 The Vipers showed their most energy played with some jump off the start of the period but couldnt hold off the Backs as Salmon Arm with two quick back to back goals basically put the game away. Vernon couldnt seem to respond-recover until the final few minutes, but by then it was too late. Salmon Arm with a physical, hard hitting, fiesty game totally earned the win. Salmon Arm outshot Vernon 9-8.
Top Players: (Vernon)
Liam Finlay (1 assist) Was really skating, moving the puck and creating chances was the only Viper that really showed anything tonight. Finlay looked to have lots of jump in his game couldnt do it all picked up one assist.
Danny Todosychuk (15 saves) Didnt see alot of action but did make atleast three big saves in the opening period with the game still scoreless. Todosychuk may want to have the Silverbacks first goal of the game back, after kicking out a huge rebound to a wide open Joshua Laframboise. Played well in a game where there wasnt alot of activity-shots at both ends of the rink.
Game Thought's: (Vernon)
The Vipers didnt play very well in a game where they were outhit, outworked at times and out muscled. Both teams didnt generate a whole lot of offensive chances but the Vipers didnt play with alot of jump or energy for most of the game. The Vipers struggled in their own end defensively, giving up way too many pucks, coughing up the puck in and around the net, had troubles getting out of their own end. I thought Vernon come out to start the 3rd with some jump and energy looked a little too laid back and played pretty soft for most of the night. Being outplayed for most of the night, they had two back to back powerplays in the 1st were being outplayed at the time really needed a powerplay goal to get some momentum-spark. The Vipers actually would get the games first three powerplays but couldnt capitalize, allowed the Backs to hang around before Salmon Arm jumped out to the two goal lead. The Vipers four game winning streak was snapped are basically playing for pride and also trying to catch the Nanaimo Clippers for the second best record in the BCHL needed to play with a little more gritt, as this could easily be a first round playoff matchup. The Vipers stayed away from the physical game, didnt go to the grey areas didnt step up their game and try and match Salmon Arm's high tempo-physical style of game. Vernon actually did get some good looks at the net but had troubles hitting the net. A once long time rivarly, you could feel the emotion and intensity on the ice between these two teams as the hatred got very heated through out tonight's game. Several scrums-altercations after the whistle. The Vipers seemed to be more involved in chirpping after the whistle, as the Backs got under the Vipers skin tonight and it showed. Vernon needed to respond to the physical play and they didnt. Vernon with one game remaining in the regular season will play in Penticton Friday.
Top Players: (Salmon Arm)
Phil Midleton (1 assist) With the loss to defenceman Andrew Farny Midleton will be leaned on for that top defensive role. Has played very well vs Vernon this season played very well again tonight. Picking up an assist likes to get pucks to the net in a hurry, has a hard shot from the point, good skater, moves the puck well likes to engage in the play at the same time.
Carson Bolduc (1 goal & 1 assist) Was involved in the play through out the game, was skating hard, getting involved had a great chance to open the scoring in the 1st period couldnt find the back of the open net on a Viper turnover.
Thomas Plese (1 goal & 1 assist) Played a huge role in getting under the skin of several Vipers. Was involved in alot of the after the whistle activities played with an edge.
Bryden Marsh was really flying, skating hard, played well up front for the Silverbacks.
Taylor Maruya (1 goal & 1 assist) I thought was Salmon Arm's best player this evening. Another kid who has played very well vs the Vipers this year was all over the ice. A good strong skater, can move the puck, create offensice chances, is dangerous with and without the puck.
Joshua Laframboise (1 goal) Was another Salmon Arm forward who was involved in the play, played hard and competed. Had a few opportunities.
Game Thought's: (Salmon Arm)
Salmon Arm has been one of if not the hottest team since the Christmas break and its showed, as the Silverbacks have climbed up the standings now sits 3rd in the Division tied in points with West Kelowna. The Backs have now won three of the last four meetings with Vernon seem to have the Vipers number as of late. SA fighting for their playoff lives come ready to play and it showed. The Silverbacks with a strong night all around was by far the better of the two teams. Salmon Arm cant take a night off needs all the wins they can get just to get into the playoffs, while Vernon on the other hand has basically been playing for pride the last few weeks with 2nd place already locked up just waiting to see who they will face in the opening rounds of the playoffs. The Backs carried most of the play through out all three periods were really skating, played with alot of jump and energy, were laying the body on the Vipers every chance they could, finishing their checks. SA getting under the skin of the Vipers played with an edge. Salmon Arm with a good penalty kill, did give up two powerplay goals but the first three powerplays went to Vernon. The Backs got the key saves from Angus Redmond when needed and killed off all three minors with it still scoreless. The Vipers get a PP goal or two and this is a different hockey game. I really like the Backs intensity, played very well defensively, limited Vernon's shots and chances gave the Vipers all kinds of troubles defensively forcing the Vipers into several turnovers. The Backs did a great job at shutting down Vernon's offensive players clogging up the neutral zone.
