Alan Caldwell over at small thoughts at large (WHL Blog) has posted every Western Hockey League team's 2015-16 prospects list. This only include players who were not WHL regulars last year. If a kid played more than 20-30 games or so in the WHL last year, he's not on these lists.
The WHL Vancouver Giants have former Vernon Vipers forward Dexter Dancs as one of fourty four players listed on their 2015-16 prospects list. Dancs was drafted 255th overall by the Giants at the 2010 WHL Bantam Draft.
Dancs played a season and a half with the Vipers (2012-2014) after coming over in a trade with the Penticton Vees. On December 5th 2012 the Vipers traded Jedd Soleway to Penticton for Dexter Dancs. In 44 games with the Vipers Dancs recorded (30-goals-53-assists-83-points). Dancs is in his second year with the University of Michigan.

Edinburgh Capitals have signed 6ft 5" 240lb defenceman Kyle Bigos. The fourth round Edmonton Oliers draft pick played for the Ontario Reign in the ECHL and the Worcester Sharks of the AHL.
Riley Emmerson said, "Adding Kyle as our 4th D signed is huge. He is a fantastic defence man that is going to be great for Edinburgh. He brings everything to our club size, strength, strong in the defensive zone, and a great first pass. He also adds a big shot from the point and even more character to our locker room. He's a man with a big, strong body who enjoys the physical side of the game, he hits hard and he finishes his checks. He's going to be a defensive force. From playing with and against Kyle I know he is going to make our club that much stronger.
Kyle Bigos said, "I am very excited for the opportunity to be apart of the Edinburgh Capitals. I look forward to joining my team mates later this summer and start our journey towards a championship."

Adam will join the rest of his Spruce Kings teammates when the team commences their Main Training Camp on August 24th at the coliseum.
Vees Loaded For Another National Championship Run:
A player’s character is often judged based on how they respond to adversity, so evaluating a coaching staff using the same metric is probably fair. After losing a heartbreaking national championship semi-final in which the referee incorrectly blew the whistle on a winning goal in the first overtime period, how would recruiting be affected? With so much distraction then subsequently materializing for Harbinson (offers to coach at NCAA powers Wisconsin, North Dakota and surely others), would time constraints and uncertainty affect the ability to convince young stars, Tyson Jost & Dante Fabbro to return? With only five other players potentially returning from the 2014-15 season, a lot of recruiting work and negotiation was going to be needed to bring the Vees back to BCHL championship caliber. “Recruiting is an all-year activity for our staff. Every year, we graduate well over 50% of our team to NCAA Division I hockey, so we can never take a day off of recruiting”, explains Harbinson. “I think our first big recruiting win took place during the early rounds of the playoffs, when Minnesota pals Dixon Bowen and Colton Poolman visited us and decided to commit to our program, rather than return to the USHL. The two University of North Dakota committed players will bring character and toughness to our program.” “Having OHA as our neighbor is a massive advantage to our program”, continued Harbinson. “We have a great partnership, and from them, over the course of the year, we were able to draw Okanagan locals Taylor Ward, Griffin Mendel and Sam Jones to the Vees. Along with CSSHL rival, Ben Brar (Yale Academy), we are leaning more and more on the prep school league to re-stock our lineup with quality people.” Added Harbinson, “our import cards are critical (each BCHL team is allowed six American players ) and we believe we added three other quality American players to our roster in Seamus Donohue, Tyler Niven and Easton Brodzinski. Again this season, we have benefitted from our Minnesota-based relationships and strong brand reputation. Donohue was considered the top defenseman in Minnesota high school hockey, mobile Dman Niven is being closely watched by several NCAA hockey programs and big Brodzinski is a power forward with deep family roots in Minnesota hockey.” From other Canadian provinces, the Vees recruited Jason Lavallee from Quebec (transferred from Sorel, RESQ) and Owen Sillinger from Saskatchewan. Through trades, Harbinson added Mitch Brooks from Ontario (signed from Stratford, GOJHL) and Albertan Chris Gerrie (from Olds, AJHL in exchange for former Vee Jarod Hilderman). “Each of these four players are highly regarded and played very key roles for their teams last season. They will all bring considerable experience and talent to the Vees”, said Harbinson. The most important recruiting challenge this off-season for Harbinson was bringing back Jost & Fabbro. Both players are regarded as high 2016 NHL Draft Picks, and the pressure from the WHL to play there must be high. Responded Harbinson, “I believe we demonstrated to both players last season what we have to offer in terms of being a top Canadian developmental junior program. We are adding to that framework this year to give them even more tools to help in their progression. Both players believe that they can fulfill their professional hockey objectives by playing two years in Penticton then going to the NCAA program of their choice. We are very proud to have them back, and expect each to play key leadership roles for us.” Continued Harbinson, “Scott Conway recognizes the NHL exposure that the Vees will attract this year, and I think that played a big part in the former Penn State player deciding to play for us. I expect him to have a massive impact this season. He was named to the Big 10 all rookie team and was one of the top players in the USHL the year before. In total, I believe that we have the potential to have more offensive firepower than we had last season.” With 20 year old veteran goalie Anthony Brodeur and Brendan Barry returning in nets, the Vees have an excellent chance to repeat as the BCHL team with the lowest goals against average. Add in returning Vees and former Team Canada West players Demico Hannoun and Gabe Bast, and the Vees roster certainly looks intimidating on paper. “We do not shy away from publicly stating that our goal is to win the National Championship, emphasized Harbinson. We look great on paper, but our ability to fight together through adversity will determine just how successful we will be.” “I believe our high talent level will make Penticton fans proud and excited to come to the SOEC. I expect this team could field upwards of 6 future NHL draft picks. There’s no question that I believe we will again be a leading contender to deliver a National Championship, back to Penticton, and end the season not feeling cheated, but elated.”
Wild Name Tienda New Trainer:
The Wenatchee Wild, proud members of the BCHL, would like to welcome Jose Tienda to the Wild family. Mr. Tienda has accepted the trainer’s position with the Wild and will relocate to Wenatchee Washington at the end of this week. Jose, earned a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of the Pacific and a Master’s degree from California University of Pennsylvania. Jose has spent the last three springs and summers working with the Oakland Raiders of the NFL. He was also the Head Athletic Trainer for the Stockton Thunder of the ECHL, professional hockey for the 2014-2015 season. Before going to school to become a trainer Mr. Tienda was a Sergeant in the United States Marine Corps from 1999 to 2004. Jose also owns a cross fit athletic training center in Stockton California. “I am excited to work for an organization that puts athlete safety above all else. As the Head Athletic Trainer for the Wild, my goal is to provide the highest quality of medicine and care. I am looking forward to a great season and excitement of Wild Hockey.” “We look forward to having Jose come on board with us for this season. His references spoke very highly of him as well as the coaches he has worked with. I feel our athletes are in good hands again.” said Wild GM Bliss Littler.
Warriors Name Marino Captain:
The West Kelowna Warriors have named their captain for the upcoming season, as Kyle Marino will don the 'C' for the 2015/2016 campaign. Marino, who is returning to West Kelowna for his 2nd season as a Warrior, had 3 goals and 15 assists in his rookie season, which saw him move to a forward role after playing most of the first half on defence. The 20-year-old Niagara Falls, ON native already knows his leadership plan. "It's a big honour being named captain for this year. Being my final season as an older guy on the team I'm just going to lead by example, be vocal in the room like I am and make guys feel comfortable being here." Head coach and General Manager Rylan Ferster says that Marino has everything you look for in a leader. "I think what you want in your captain, is if you take the logo off your jersey and put someones picture there, that's what you want your captain to be," said Ferster on Day 1 of Main Camp. "It's one thing to be a leader in the dressing room, but you want that person to represent your program. Kyle is what a West Kelowna Warrior is all about."

I got a taste of how talented the coaches and players are and got a feel for the support from the community during the tryout camp this past July. I’m excited to play in this passionate hockey town and for the season to start.”
Prince George-Ancaster Trade:
The Prince George Spruce Kings are pleased to announce the acquisition of 19 year old defenseman Adam Burnett from The Ancaster Avalanche of the Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League (GOJHL) in exchange for future considerations. The 6’3” 205lb Burnett is from Waterdown, Ontario and played 35 games last in the Ontario Junior Hockey League (OJHL) split between the Stouffville Spirit and Milton Icehawks. He tallied 3 goals and 14 assists for 17 points plus 62 minutes in penalties in those 35 games. He finished the season with the Ancaster Avalanche where he tallied 2 goals and 11 assists for 13 points plus 14 penalty minutes in 13 games played. “Adam is a big strong veteran defenseman with great leadership abilities. He has played over 130 Junior A games in Ontario. He will play in all situations for us and make an already deep defense group even deeper. A lot of the success we have this season will start with our defensemen and Adam will be a big part of that” said Spruce Kings General Manager Mike Hawes.

Exhibition: Salmon Arm 4 Vernon 3 Overtime
For anyone who could not attend or watch tonight’s Vipers game here are my thoughts and views from tonight’s game. You may agree or disagree but we all have our own view and opinion on any game we watch. This is my opinion and my thoughts on how I saw tonight’s game. I try to be unbiased and give a fare recap on both sides. Thanks for stopping by & visiting my blog.
I was at tonight's Vipers-Silverbacks pre-season game as Salmon Arm defeated Vernon 4-3 in overtime in front of a decent crowd at Kal Tire Place. (They didnt announce tonight's attendance)
Starting Goaltenders:
Vernon: Andrew Shortridge
Salmon Arm: Angus Redmond
1st Period: The Silverbacks would get two good scoring chances early. Just two minutes into the opening period Jake Simons was stopped in close by Andrew Shortridge before Josh Blanchard was stopped on the rebound as Salmon Arm with back to back opportunities couldnt open the scoring. The Vipers who struggled last night come ready to play tonight with a much better performance and it showed as both teams were fairly even through out the 1st period. Vernon had their fare share of offensive zone time was having troubles getting pucks to the net as the Backs defence was solid early and through out the period blocking several Viper shots. The Vipers needed almost six minutes to get their first shot on goal. On the other side the Silverbacks were firing everything on goal, getting lots of pucks to the net on Andrew Shortridge. Seven minutes into the game Griffin James the lone back back on defence made a huge defensive play breaking up a Silverbacks three on one rush. Just before the halway mark Vernon would get the games first powerplay, before getting a shortened two man advantage. Salmon Arm's defence/penalty killers were bang on come up with a great penalty kill would kill off the five on three as the Vipers didnt register a single shot with the two man advantage. Just as the penalties expired back come SA who come very close to scoring at the other end of the rink but Andrew Shortridge made a huge goal line save with traffic crashing the crease. The Backs then come very close to grabing the 1-0 lead shortly after Brody Valette's point shot was redirected in front forcing Shortridge to make a tough save with bodies in front. With just under five minutes to go Tak Anholt would get Vernon's best opportunity of the frame couldnt beat veteran goaltender Angus Redmond who made a huge save in close keeping this game scoreless. Salmon Arm was outshooting the Vipers 16-3 at this point as Vernon was struggling getting shots on net. The Vipers come on strong to finish the 1st had some good strong energy shifts to finish the period as it was tied 0-0 after 20 minutes of play. Salmon Arm outshot Vernon 18-9. A much better opening period by Vernon who looked much better compared to last night's 6-1 loss in Salmon Arm. Both teams played hard, competed and had a few scoring chances. The Backs had the better of the scoring opportunities were firing everything on net didnt play as physical after last night's hard hitting afair. Vernon had the two biggest hits of the period after two monsterous hits by Riley Brandt and Austin Cho. Andrew Shortridge was the busier of the two goaltenders played big made some good saves keeping this game scoreless. Even though the Silverbacks outshot Vernon the play was alot closer then the shot clock.
2nd Period: The Vipers with a strong start carried the edge in play early. Although needing almost four minutes to record their first shot on goal Vernon looked good to start the second period. Joey Cipollone with a great chance in front couldnt beat Silverbacks starting goaltender Angus Redmond who made a big save in close. The Vipers would ,lose Bo Pellah for ten minutes early into the middle frame after picking up a ten minute misconduct but a minute later would get their second powerplay of the evening. The Vipers couldnt capitalize after coming close. Griffin James graized the post as the Vipers come close to opening the scoring, Vernon getting some quality shots on goal were 0-2 with the PP. Just after the penalty expired #21 for SA (wasnt on the lineup-roster sheet) had a great look in front couldnt beat Vipers starting goaltender Andrew Shortridge before Steven Jandric come back the other way was stopped by Redmond as both teams had chances at each end. On the following stoppage in play Joesph McLeod would replace Shortridge with just over eight minutes remaining in the frame. Shortridge stopped all 22 Salmon Arm shots. Up until this point it was all Vernon as the Vipers carried the play for all of the first half of the period before the Silverbacks slowly adjusted and come back with a strong finish to the 2nd. Bo Pellah made a huge defensive play batted the puck down from in the crease after a shot from the point, was very close to bouncing into the open cage. Brett Steward was allowed to walk right in from the point untouched before getting off a quick shot, with a scramble in front Cam Coutre put home the loose puck in front just before the net come off the mourings giving Salmon Arm a 1-0 lead at 14:20 Steward & Josh Blanchard with the assists. Less then a minute later Nick Hutchison on a wrap around gave the Silverbacks a 2-0 lead at 15:07 Brody Valette collected the helper. Just shortly after Aidan Salerno with a rocket of a shot from the circle beat Joesph McLeod but hit the post on a close call. The Backs kept coming and were now the better team as Vernon was back on their heels. Vernon would eventually get on the board after a hard nose shift from Peter Tufto. Tufto skated over the Silverbacks blueline ripped a high shot glove side past Angus Redmond cut the Silverbacks lead to 2-1 at 17:20 Steven Jandric & Austin Cho with the helpers. Salmon Arm come right back with a flurry of shots from in tight, as McLeod had to be alert made a few saves to keep this a two goal game. Late in the frame SA would get their first look with the powerplay but it was the Vipers who come close to tying the game. Michael Roberts lead a two on one shorthanded rush in the final minute tried setting up Riley Brandt who was going to the net but the puck looked to hit the Silverbacks defenceman and stay out as the net come off its mourings. Salmon Arm was up 2-1 after 40 minutes of play. Vernon outshot Salmon Arm 15-11. The Vipers with a great first half looked strong. Vernon carried the better of the play in the first ten to eleven minutes had a few opportunities couldnt find the back of the net. Salmon Arm was back on their heels a bit before re-gaining their composure once Vernon switched goaltenders. This seemed to be a bit of a turning point in the game as once the Vipers switched goaltenders the Backs got some life, scored two quick back to back goals jumped out to a two goal lead and were the better of the two teams in the second half. Salmon Arm with some good chances come close to making it 3-0 were up by one heading into the third.
3rd Period: The Silverbacks would start the third on the PP that was carried over from the 2nd period. Having the Vipers back on their heels, Vernon couldnt clear the zone but SA couldnt capitalize with the man advantage. Liam Finlay tried setting up Peter Tufto on a Viper two on one rush early but it was Brody Valette who come up with the big defensive play to break up the odd man rush. A few minutes later Ryan Cooper was hit from behind, Nicholas Rasovic jumped in dropping the gloves with Aidan Salerno as a minor scrum took place deep in the Backs zone. Rasovic would get tossed from the game for fighting. A few minutes later Austin Cho setup Tak Anholt on a Vernon two on one but Anholt was robbed by Angus Redmond who made a huge game save keeping this a one goal game. A few minutes later the Vipers would get a shot with the PP and capitalize. Jimmy Lambert with a rock of a shot went high glove on Redmond tied the game 2-2 at 11:04 Reece Soukoroff and Bo Pellah with the assists. Salmon Arm having troubles getting shots on goal went the first eleven minutes with just one shot on goal. As the period got into the final ten minutes both teams evened up in play as the play went back and fourth. The play got a little chippy at times as the Silverbacks laid out atleast three cheap shots that went undetected. Some pushing and shoving coming from both clubs as the physical play picked up a bit as the game wore on. With about six minutes to go the Silverbacks stepped up their game come on with several hard shifts getting some great looks at the net-great opportunities. Joesph McLeod made a big stop from in close before quickly getting across to rob Aidan Salerno. Former Viper forward Matty Saharchuk had three good opportunities from in close couldnt beat McLeod. Nick Hutchison, Marcus Mitchell & #21 all with good chances couldnt beat the Viper goaltender who come up big for his team late in the game. Vernon back on their heels late in a tied game relied on their goaltender to keep em in it. Late in the period Peter Tufto with all the work along the boards dodged a check, made a sweet pass out front setup second year Viper Liam Finlay who gave Vernon their first lead of the night at 18:11 Tufto with the lone assist. Late in the game Riley Brandt & Aidan Salerno would both get ten minute misconducts and leave the game. The Vipers would get called for icing the puck with 1:06 remaining. SA would call a timeout got Angus Redmond to the bench for the extra attacker. The Backs would win the draw before Brett Steward tied the game just six seconds after the timeout tying the game 3-3 at 18:58 Nick Hutchison & Phil Middleton picked up the helpers. The game was tied 3-3 after 60 minutes of play. Vernon outshot Salmon Arm 15-13. Both teams battled hard and played hard in a pretty evenly matched period. The Vipers with some great chances early to start the period would eventually tie the game. Salmon Arm responded late with a ton of pressure and opportunities tied the game late forcing overtime. Both goaltenders played very well in the 3rd made for some heroic type saves.
Overtime: Off the opening faceoff the Vipers with three real good chances were stopped by Angus Redmond who was solid tonight. Salmon Arm with just two shots would score the game winner after Marcus Mitchell setup Nick Hutchison who walked into the slot beat Joesph McLeod giving the Backs the 4-3 OT victory as the Silverbacks bench poured onto the ice for the celebration. Marcus Mitchell & Cameron Trott collected the helpers. Vernon outshot Salmon Arm 4-2. The Vipers with the early chances couldnt beat Redmond before Nick Hutchison's second goal of the night proved to be the OT winner as Salmon Arm takes both games of the home and home series.
Top Players: (Vernon)
Andrew Shortridge (22 saves) Stopped all 22 Salmon Arm shots started the game for the Vipers before being replaced by Joesph McLeod just past the midway mark of the 2nd period. Shortridge a 20 yr old goaltender played very well made some good saves in the opening frame. A bigger goaltender covers alot of the net is hard to be in close.
Joesph McLeod (18 saves) I thought looked a little off after replacing Andrew Shortridge. Im not sure if he was nervous or just not comfortable but he looked a little off early but settled down once the game went on. I Didnt get over quick enough to stop Nick Hutchison on the wrap around on Salmon Arm's second goal did get better as the game went on was forced into making some huge saves late in the 3rd with the game tied. McLeod made some game savers in the final six-five minutes, looked vert focused keeping this game tied.
Griffin James played very well on the Vernon backend. A bigger kid plays with an edge was steady all night.
Austin Cho was another defenceman that I thought played very well. Not the quickest skater but has some size, was physical, steady on the blueline and made some nice offensive plays through out the contest. Jumped up into the play, joined the rush on several occasions.
Peter Tufto (1 goal & 1 assist) Started off a little slow but as the game went along picked up his game and was one of Vernon's more dangerous threats with the puck. Not the biggest kid, has some wheels can really move up ice in a hurry, really sees and reads the ice well. Scored the Vipers first goal of the night after a wicked shot from just outside the dots beat Angus Redmond high glove. Then dodged a hit before setting up Liam Finlay on the Vipers 3rd goal.
Nicholas Rasovic caught my eye tonight. Another second year Viper returning to Vernon this season played with an edge, had a bit of a mean streak tonight. Battled and competed hard, went to the corners and the grey areas, didnt back down from the rough stuff before standing up for a teammate after Ryan Cooper was drilled from behind.
Jimmy Lambert was another kid who I didnt really notice until the 2nd period. As the game went on Lambert improved and showed some of his talent. Played very well in the second half of the game.
Game Thought's: (Vernon)
After watching last night's disapointing 6-1 loss in Salmon Arm the Vipers responded with a much better performance and effort tonight. The Vipers fall to 0-2 this pre-season play in Prince George Friday. This was a 360 turn around from last night. Vernon come ready to play, were skating, working and competing all night. The Vipers werent scared of the physical play tonight, unlike last night, stepped up their physical play and worked-played as a team. I know its only the pre-season but the Vipers looked like a different team. Give Vernon credit they fell behind 2-0 but didnt quit, battled back to tie the game before scoring late in the 3rd looked to come away with their first win of the Exhibition season. The Vipers improved defensively, didnt make anywhere near the amount of mistakes-turnovers compared to last night. Vernon was having trouble getting pucks to the net especially early to start the game, give some credit to Salmon Arm's defence but the Vipers looked to pass instead of shoot on several occasions. As the game went on the Vipers seemed to shoot more, getting more pucks on goal. A big goal by Peter Tufto late in the 2nd period gets Vernon on the scoreboard, cuts the SA lead to 2-1. At this point the Silverbacks were coming on and had a few chances come close to grabbing a 3-0 lead. Salmon Arm goes up by three and this may be a different game-final score. Tufto gets the Vipers and the crowd back into the game and gives Vernon some momentum. I thought the Vipers struggled with the man advantage, just like last night. This was a very good yet exciting hockey game even if its only Exhibition. Vernon dressed twenty players for tonight's matchup with eleven players sitting in the stands.
Top Players: (Salmon Arm)
Angus Redmond (40 saves) Wasnt very busy in the opening period (9 shots) made some big saves in the 2nd, 3rd and overtime periods. Remond a 20 yr old returning to Salmon Arm for his final year of Junior hockey has played very well over the years against the Vipers. A bigger goaltender covers alot of the net sees and reads the plays well, has a quick glove and dosnt give up alot of rebounds.
Brody Valette (1 assist) had a heck of a game for the Silverbacks. Was very good at both ends of the rink, was involved in the play, steady on the back end, made one huge defensive play to break up a Vipers odd man rush impressed me through out the game tonight.
Brett Steward (1 goal & 1 assist) Was another d-man that caught my attention. Another defenceman that liked to get involved in the play, found the open ice to jump up into the play. Reads and sees the ice well.
Nick Hutchison (2 goals & 1 assist) I was surprised to see in the linup tonight after picking up an extra game misconduct for being third man in a fight. Hutchison was given a game misconduct last night and then picked up the second game misconduct for third man in. Why was he playing tonight? Moving on... had a strong game for the Backs scored the OT winner collecting three points was very good through out the game.
Marcus Mitchell (1 assist) Also had a strong game up front. Was in and around the play through out tonight's contest.
#21 Wasnt listed on the Silverbacks roster-lineup sheet caught my attention. Played a strong game. Not the biggest kid but played well.
Game Thought's: (Salmon Arm)
The Silverbacks improve to 2-1 in the pre-season won both games of the home & home series with Vernon. Salmon Arm wasnt nearly as physical compared to last night but did still lay out some hits. This was a totally different game compared to last night. Both teams played very well. SA likes to fire everything and anything on goal, had a ton of shots in the opening period couldnt beat Andrew Shortridge. The Backs played with an edge laying out some very close hits that could have deserved penalties but so did the Vipers on occasion. Salmon Arm is quick, can move the puck in a hurry, gets shots off in a hurry and was very good defensively especially in the opening period. The Backs dressed twenty players with eleven players sitting in the stands. Good to see a handful of Silverbacks fans make the trip up from Salmon Arm for tonight's game.

Exhibition: Salmon Arm 6 Vernon 1
For anyone who could not attend or watch tonight’s Vipers game here are my thoughts and views from tonight’s game. You may agree or disagree but we all have our own view and opinion on any game we watch. This is my opinion and my thoughts on how I saw tonight’s game. I try to be unbiased and give a fare recap on both sides. Thanks for stopping by & visiting my blog.
I was at tonight's Vipers-Silverbacks pre-season game as Salmon Arm defeated Vernon 6-1 in front of a pretty good crowd at the Shaw Centre. (Didnt announce tonight's attendance)
Starting Goaltenders:
Vernon: Jarrod Schamerhorn
Salmon Arm: Zach Dyment
1st Period: The Silverbacks playing their second game of the pre-season jumped on the Vipers who were playing their first exhibition game of the season early and often. Salmon Arm got the play deep into the Vernon zone off the opening faceoff, come out hitting early and often. The Backs with a great forecheck early had the Vipers pinned in their own end. Twenty five seconds into the period Aidan Salerno with a quick shot from the point forced Jarrod Scahmerhorn into making a big save less then a minute into the contest. Vernon who struggled off the opening faceoff had all kinds of trouble with the Silverbacks attack and physical play as the Vipers had troubles clearing the zone. It was all SA early and often as the Backs with some good pressure dominated the play early. Just over five minutes into the frame Salmon Arm with two quality chances couldnt open the scoring. Schamerhorn made a big pad save off a shot from the slot before robbing Aidan Salerno in front who had a wide open cage. On the following shift Callum Volpe come up with a huge defensive play breaking up a Backs two on one keeping this game scoreless. The Silverbacks would then get the games first powerplay, come close once again to opening the scoring after a quick shot from the point just missed the far corner. The Backs with some good presure couldnt capitalize. Salmon Arm carried most of the play as Vernon had all kinds of trouble getting into the offensive zone getting just three shots on goal in the first half of the 1st period. The Vipers would eventually get their first scoring chance of the night with about seven minutes to go. Joey Cipollone wheeled from the corner out front couldnt beat former Vipers affiliated goaltender Zach Dyment with a ton of bodies in front made the save keeping this game scoreless. Steven Jandric would wheel into the Backs zone shortly after tried setting up Ryan Cooper in the slot couldnt handle the pass on a missed opportunity. About three minutes later Vernon would get their first look with the man advantage, but the Vipers struggled as SA would kill off the minor. Just after the penalty expired the Vipers couldnt clear the zone, two turnovers inside the blueline allowed veteran forward Josh Blanchard to walk in went high glove beat Vipers starting goaltender Jarrod Schamerhorn giving Salmon Arm a 1-0 lead at 16:24 Taro Hirose with the lone assist. Vernon would get a late PP in the final minute that would carry over into the 2nd period. It was 1-0 Salmon Arm after 20 minutes of play. The Silverbacks outshot the Vipers 14-8. This was not the opening frame the Vipers were looking for as Salmon Arm dominated the first period totally outplayed, outworked and outhit the Vipers in all departments. Jarrod Schamerhorn played very well made some big saves when needed too to keep his hockey club in the game. The Backs move the puck well, play very physical and have a strong forecheck. The Vipers with one quality scoring chance couldnt get through the neutral zone, had very little offensive zone time. SA was winning all the battles along the boards and winning the races to the pucks.
2nd Period: The Vipers started the middle frame on the powerplay that was carried over from the 1st period. SA would kill off the remainder of the PP before jumping out to a two goal lead just as the penalty expired. Aaron Aragon put Salmon Arm up 2-0 at 1:42 with Nick Hutchison & Colton Thibault picked up the helpers. The Silverbacks again looked sharp and carried the play early and often. Sam De Melo with a shot from the point forced Jarrod Schamerhorn into making a big pad save before Vernon product Colton Thibault burried the rebound at the side of the goal giving Salmon Arm a 3-0 lead at 5:39 De Melo and former Vipers defenceman Ryley Booth collected the assists. Joe Sacco would take a shot to the head in his own end needed help from the trainer before getting up slowly and looking a little woozy going to the bench. Sacco would sit out a few shifts but stayed in the game. The Backs would change goaltenders just before the halfway mark. Daniel Toews replaced starting goaltender Zach Dyment who stopped all 15 Vernon shots. On the following play the Silverbacks would get their second look with the man advantage getting a four minute powerplay. Salmon Arm moving the puck around had the Vipers hemmned in their own end for most of the full four minutes as Vernon's penalty killers managed to clear the zone just once in almost three minutes without getting a stoppage in play. Schamerhorn had to be sharp was quick on his feet made some good saves on the PK as the Vipers would excape and kill off the four minute minor. On the following whistle Joesph McLeod would replace Jarrod Schamerhorn who allowed three goals on 31 Salmon Arm shots. The following play the Backs would get back on the powerplay and capitalize. Nick Hutchison put Salmon Arm up 4-0 at 13:32 Ryley Booth with the assist. Joe Sacco would get Vernon's best opportunity of the second period graized the edge of the post on a parcial breakaway couldnt get the Vipers on the scoreboard. Vernon would then get their second PP of the night but it was the Silverbacks who held more control of the puck shorthanded would kill off the minor. Just as the penalty expired Salmon Arm would jump back on the man advantage and make the Vipers pay with a second powerplay goal. Sam De Melo's point shot looked to get redirceted in by Viper defenceman Callum Volpe giving Salmon Arm a 5-0 lead and full control of the hockey game at 19:23 Ross Heidt picked up the helper. It was 5-0 Silverbacks after 40 minutes of play. Salmon Arm outshot Vernon 21-10. Another strong period by the Backs who scored four goals in the second frame to pull away with a comanding five goal lead. For a second straight period the Vipers were outhit, outplayed and outworked. Vernon with very little puck possesion and zone time couldnt get through the neutral zone getting just three shots in the final twelve minutes of the 2nd period. Vernon with very little scoring chances again struggled defensively and getting pucks out of their own end.
3rd Period: Vernon come out of the gates with a little more bite and edge to their game, carried the play in the opening few minutes. The Vipers finally getting the puck into the Backs zone were getting pucks to the net, played with a little more jump. The Vipers with several good strong shifts played their best hockey of the night in the first five minutes of the final frame. Vernon would get an early powerplay just less then five minutes into the period. With not alot of pressure the Silverbacks were able to kill off the penalty. Two minutes later tempers heated up in a hurry after a scrum along the side wall deep inside the Vipers blueline some pushing and shoving occurred before Mitchell Oliver dropped the gloves as several players joined in on the scrum along the boards. The scrum was eventually broken up after Oliver was tossed from the game with a game misconduct. Vernon would come out on top after getting a PP out of the scrum. The Vipers who struggled with the man advantage all game couldnt capitalize before going right back to work with the powerplay as Salmon Arm was getting into penalty trouble. Once again Vernon struggled and couldnt get on the board after the Silverbacks would kill off another Viper powerplay. Just after the penalty expired Nicholas Rasovic would get stopped by Daniel Toews before Callum Volpe riffled a quick shot from the circle went upstairs getting the Vipers on the board at 14:24 Rasovic with the lone helper. But just over a minute later veteran Josh Laframboise put Salmon Arm up 6-1 at 15:27 Ryley Booth with his third helper of the night & Josh Blanchard picked up the assists. A few shifts later tempers boiled over after former West Kelowna Warriors d-man Mac Ferner jumped Josh Laframboise dropping his gloves going after Laframboise who didnt drop his gloves tried skating away from the scrum before Nick Hutchison come flying into the scrum jumped onto Ferner before a small melay broke out with several players getting into the mix. Lots of punches thrown, gloves in the face as well as pushing and shoving before the scrum was broken up. Mac Ferner would get tossed from the game as well as Griffin James who also dropped his gloves getting into a fight. Josh Laframboise and Nick Hutchison were both ejected from the game while Hutchison was given a game misconduct as well as an extra game misconduct for being the third man in. Late in the game Elijiah Barriga would take a high hit from Reece Soukoroff giving the Silverbacks a late powerplay. Salmon Arm couldnt capitalize on the man advantage come away with their first win of the pre-season taking the first game of the home & home series 6-1. Vernon outshot Salmon Arm 10-8. The Vipers with a much better start to the 3rd played a little better but still didnt look very good overall. Vernon looked to fire more pucks towards the net and had alot more zone time didnt give up as many scoring chances like the first two periods. The Backs up 5-0 heading into the 3rd sat back, looked to take their foot off the gas in the teams second exhibition game. Tempers heated up in a hurry in the 3rd with two scrums-altercations. Three fights in all all started by the Vipers in a very physical-fiesty game.
Top Players: (Vernon)
Jarrod Schamerhorn debuting his newly painted Vipers mask allowed three goals on 31 Salmon Arm shots couldnt be faulted for any of the goals played very well this evening. Returning for a second season with the Vipers, Schamerhorn kept his team in the game especially in the 1st period and then come up big in the 2nd making some big saves on a lengthy penalty kill.
Steven Jandric I thought was Vernon's best player tonight. I didnt notice him much in the 3rd but liked his game in the 1st and 2nd periods. A smooth skater, moves the puck up ice in a hurry, is quick and tallented.
Game Thought's: (Vernon)
I dont think the Vipers coaching staff with be too pleased with tonight's 6-1 loss in the first exhibition game of the season. I was very disapointed with the Vipers effort & performance. I thought Vernon was outplayed right from the opening faceoff. The Vipers were hit and hit lots through out the game, looked scared to go into the corners were losing close to almost every race for the puck. I didnt think Vernon worked hard enough, alot of players out their were just out for a skate. I didnt see alot of compete or jump in the Vipers game. The Vipers struggled getting the puck out of their own end, clearing the zone, getting the puck into the offensive zone and creating scoring chances. Didnt play with alot of jump or intensity. I counted maybe three or four scoring opportunities all night. Other then a few good shifts in the 3rd the Vipers struggled offensively to get any kind of offence going tonight. Very limited zone time. The powerplay struggled as well. I didnt think any of the Viper returning players from last season looked good, and a few of the rookies tonight struggled at the Jr A Level. Vernon dressed twenty players for tonight's game. I counted twelve scratches sitting in the stands at the start of the game. The second game of this home and home series goes tomorrow night in Vernon.
Top Players: (Salmon Arm)
Aidan Salerno I thought looked good on the Backs blueline. Was getting pucks to the net, got involved in the play as well as was steady defensively all night.
Ryley Booth (3 assists) The former Vipers d-man picked up three helpers looked good on the backend.
Sam De Melo (1 goal & 1 assist) I thought was another Silverbacks defenceman that played very well.
Josh Laframboise (1 goal) Opened the scoring played well through out the game.
Nick Hutchison (1 goal & 1 assist) I thought played well up front, was working hard all night. Made a poor decission to jump in a fight during the 3rd will now be out for one game.
Ross Heidt (1 assist) Was flying all night, this kid has some wheels and was hard to contain at times.
Game Thought's: (Salmon Arm)
The Backs were coming off a 5-2 loss to the visiting Langley Rivermen Wednesday looked very strong tonight coming away with the 6-1 victory. SA got off to a strong start off the opening faceoff and took it to the Vipers all night. I really liked Salmon Arm's compete level, they worked hard all night, every shift, never quit skating. Had alot of jump and played with alot of intensity through out the game. The Silverbacks looked like a more veteran team, seemed to have some systems in place. Played physical, were hitting the Vipers on almost every chance they had. Have a very strong forecheck, won most of the battles and races for the puck, a very quick team can move the puck up ice in a hurry, they also have some size. The Silverbacks were by far the better of the two teams, outplayed, outworked and outhit Vernon most of the night. The game got chippy-fiesty at times with two scrums-mini brawls in the 3rd to make things interesting for tomorrows rematch.
