Noonan going through rough patch
Written by Tim Healey
Published Jan 22, 2013
On Jan. 10, in the midst of a rough stretch in which the No. 11 Boston University men’s hockey team is still mired, junior assistant captain Garrett Noonan walked into the small coaches’ room for a post-practice, one-on-one meeting with BU coach Jack Parker. Noonan looked nervous.
“He had nothing to be nervous about,” Parker said immediately after the meeting, which came one day after BU (12–9, 9–6 Hockey East) blew a three-goal lead to Harvard University before losing in overtime. “He has a lot of equity in his account. All that good playing from last year and all that great defense from first semester.
“But he’s certainly struggling a little bit,” Parker added.
Two weekends later, the Terriers are still stuck in a slump, most recently losing back-to-back games to Northeastern University Friday and then-No. 15/18 University of Massachusetts-Lowell the next day.
Parker said after Saturday’s 4–3 loss to the River Hawks (13–7–1, 7–6–1 Hockey East) Noonan has been playing better of late, but it was in part his misguided actions late in the game — a five-minute major spearing penalty and game-disqualification — that killed the Terriers’ comeback attempt.
The then-No. 9 Terriers had scored twice in the third to draw within one goal. But after Noonan was ejected 14:13 into the period, BU spent most of that time on the penalty kill.
“I haven’t seen that from him in a while,” Parker said of Noonan letting his emotions get the best of him. “Saw some of that last year once in a while. We’ll figure that out.”
However, Parker didn’t offer any answers as to how, exactly, the team will “figure that out,” and Noonan loosing his cool is not necessarily anything new.
Against Denver on Dec. 29 — BU’s first game after its break, and the first game in this slide — Noonan repeatedly crosschecked a Pioneer late in the game before tag teaming him with junior defenseman Patrick MacGregor. Noonan got away without a penalty, but his frustration boiling over was evident with him playing the body and not the puck.
Friday vs. Northeastern, after BU scored three in a row only to see the Huskies reclaim a 6–5 lead, Noonan capped off the game with a five-minute slashing penalty with four seconds left.
The defenseman followed that up with an embellishment minor — a penalty that Parker abhors — before his spear Saturday.
“There’s no place for it,” said UMass-Lowell coach Norm Bazin of the spear. “And I don’t know why you would take a penalty like that in that juncture of the game.”
Although Parker said Noonan has been “terrific” leadership-wise since being appointed assistant captain at the end of the fall semester, Noonan has admitted to being frustrated with his own performance.
Noonan made a big splash in his sophomore campaign by netting 16 goals, tying him for second on the team, but this year the tallies have not come nearly as easily. Last year’s familiar sight of Noonan flying down the wing to bang home a rebound or cross-slot pass has been much less common this time around, taking away a big part of the offensive defenseman’s game.
Noonan and the Terriers will likely straighten themselves out, particularly with a relatively weak second-half schedule. Noonan has already matched his assist total from last year (11), and with 14 games remaining in BU’s regular season, the Norfolk native has time to make up ground.
That number will be 13 at most for Noonan, though, who will have to sit out as a result of his game-disqualification when his team visits Providence College Friday.
As if anticipating Saturday, a somber Noonan sung a familiar song after Friday’s loss.
“We will be better,” Noonan said. “This team trusts each other and we are going to bounce back and everyone in that room believes.”

Even before Hockey East decided it would suspend Boston University men’s hockey defenseman Garrett Noonan another game for his spear on UMass-Lowell’s Doug Carr, coach Jack Parker had already called the 21-year-old into his office.
“I asked him what he thought I was going to do and his first response was, ‘I don’t know. Whatever you do, I deserve it,’ “ Parker said.
“And then he said, ‘But I would imagine I’m going to get a second game.’ And I said, ‘Why would you say that?’ ‘Because that’s what you did to [Alexx] Privitera.’ “
After calling Noonan into his office, Parker said he called UMass-Lowell coach Norm Bazin to apologize and inform him of Noonan’s additional suspension. It was during that conversation that Bazin mentioned Noonan and Carr were from the same area.
“Then I thought to myself, maybe they have history here. Maybe they got into street fights when they were kids,” Parker said.
“So I got off the phone and I called Garrett and said, ‘I got to ask you something. You know that kid, Carr very well?’ ‘Oh yeah we’re from the same area. He’s a good buddy of mine.’ I said, ‘Did you have a history with him?’ ‘No. We’re buddies. He sold it, you know.’ ”
Not long after that conversation, Parker found out about Hockey East’s decision to also suspend Noonan for an additional game. The veteran coach then called Dan Schachte, Hockey East’s coordinator of officials,
“He sees me calling, he thinks I’m going to be mad so he says, ‘Jack I was waiting for your call,’ “ Parker said. “I said, ‘Well I just want to make one comment to you.’ He said, ‘What’s that?’ I said, ‘Great minds think along the same track.’ “
For his spear, Noonan was handed a five-minute major and a game disqualification in last Saturday’s loss to UMass-Lowell.
Schachte and Parker’s decision means Noonan will miss both games of BU’s home-and-home weekend series against Providence, a team tied with the Terriers (12-9-0, 9-6-0 HEA) in the standings with 18 points.
“It’s good that both of us did it. It lets my guys know that I’m not going to stand for that, it also lets the other teams know the league isn’t going to stand for that,” Parker said.
Noonan, who was named an assistant captain during the midseason break, is tied for scoring by Hockey East defenseman. Parker said he thinks the Norfolk, Mass. native played better in the first half of the season than he did last year.
“I think Garrett Noonan is a great kid. I think Garrett Noonan wants to win as much as anybody in that dressing room. I think Garrett Noonan is teed off he’s missing two games and he knows it’s his fault,” Parker said.
“So I think it’ll do it. I think more importantly than anything else I think he knows he hurt his team. Then and this weekend too. And he doesn’t want to do that.”
After speaking to Parker, Noonan addressed his teammates and apologized to them.
“He apologized in front of the whole team, because we really do need him in the lineup. It’s sad not to have him for two games so we’re going to be hurting back there a little bit, but luckily we got enough guys to step up and fill in for him when he’s out,” assistant captain Ryan Ruikka said.
“I think it was a little bit hard for him but he manned up to it and did what he needed to do and guys respect that.”
The Terriers have dealt with some unwise penalties this season, and earlier defenseman Alexx Privitera was suspended two games after kicking someone while BU was in Denver.
“Coach has implemented some stuff to get us not to take dumb penalties and stick penalties and stuff so we’ve been working that,” Ruikka said. “I think we kind of slipped away from it here and we beat ourselves in these last few games and it’s cost us.”
Parker has been punishing stupid penalties — what Ruikka referred to as all stick penalties — by making players hit the bike for 20 miles.
“[They’re] not fun,” Ruikka said.
“Obviously there’s a high stick and that’s an accident and stuff but it’s up to his discretion. So if it’s a dumb penalty you can tell, there’s video review and he can watch that so he knows.”

Shoots: Right. Born: July 17, 1985, Mississauga, Ontario.
College: Vermont.
PD: You played for a team in Germany for 25 games in 2010-11. Summarize the experience.
DS: I had an injury that forced me to come home early. Other than that, it was fine. I really enjoyed the culture.
PD: Favorite food/drink when in Germany?
DS: Spatzle and Gluhwein.
PD: What is Gluhwein?
DS: A festive drink. It's like hot wine, with some other stuff in there. Tastes great.
PD: Was hockey always your favorite sport?
DS: I didn't really choose until the end of high school. I also played soccer, football and wrestled. And I golfed in the summer.
PD: What positions in football?
DS: Middle linebacker and kicker. I don't even know if I made one field goal, we were so bad.
PD: When did you think you could make a living playing hockey?
DS: Honestly, I didn't think I'd be doing anything with any sport. But if there was one, it was going to be hockey.
PD: Why would you have that mind-set?
DS: I have no idea. I never was a superstar, I just enjoyed playing.
PD: What is it like to play for Monsters coach Dean Chynoweth?
DS: That's a dangerous question, so I'll put together a political answer. He's knowledgeable about the game and great with the players. The guys respect him.
PD: Preferred activities away from ice?
DS: Lots of couch time. Going out for dinner -- even though that doesn't happen very often. I wish I were more exciting.
PD: Favorite athlete?
DS: Tiger Woods.
PD: Super Bowl pick/why?
DS: 49ers. [Colin] Kaepernick has nothing but energy. I think he will propel them through it.
PD: What is one thing about you that even your friends might not know?
DS: When I was 3 or 4, I stuck my right hand into a stationary bike and cut three of my fingers badly. They were able to sew them back on.
PD: Are you serious?
DS: I wouldn't lie about something like that. My cousin, who was about the same age, was on the bike. She didn't know what she was doing. I walked up to it and, like a dummy, stuck my hand in there somewhere. The fingers were hanging and we rushed to the hospital. I've got small scars to remind me.
PD: Any other wild events in your life?
DS: I had a hole-in-one last year.
PD: Elaborate, please.
DS: It was the 12th hole at Vermont National. I used a Mizuno 9-iron. The ball took one bounce and rolled 4, 5 feet and disappeared. I have a witness.
PD: What ball did you use and where is it?
DS: Titleist Pro V1 that I found in the bushes the previous hole. My dad asked for it about six months ago. I figured he was going to do something with it, but nothing's happened yet.

Former Vipers Defenceman Guiltinan Ranked By NHL Central Scouting:
Former Vernon Vipers defenceman Kevin Guiltinan was recently ranked by NHL Central Scouting. Guiltinan was recruited and signed by the Vipers over the summer starting the season with the Vipers before being traded along with future considerations to Prince George on November 22nd for forward Liam Board. In 39 games this season Guiltinan has (0-2-2).

Kevin Guiltinan Ranked by NHL Central Scouting
Wednesday, January 16, 2013
On Tuesday Spruce Kings defenceman Kevin Guiltinan found his name ranked among the top NHL Draft Eligible players for this summer's draft by NHL Central Scouting. An honour to be sure, but one that is deserved for this hard working young man from London Ontario.
Guiltinan came to the Prince George Spruce Kings via the Vernon Vipers after choosing to come to the BCHL to future his hockey career. I should point out that this is a career that is already far ahead of many other players at this point in their lives. Kevin secured a scholarship to Harvard University for the start of the 2014/15 season playing midget hockey for the Hill Academy Prep School in his home town.
This is a player that plays above his years and plays with an edge (that's a theme I've noticed with both Kevin and Jujhar). This is something that the teams and leagues that scour the BCHL looking for their next gem are looking for. Kevin is the first to admit that he isn't the most offensively gifted player on the blue line but his physical play and compete level doesn't allow very many other players to score when he's out there either.
I had a chance to talk to Kevin briefly after learning that the seventeen year old went from a 'C' rating with NHL Central Scouting to his much more prominent positing in the midterm rankings. There is still a long way to go before the NHL Draft and much more that Kevin wants to be able to show on the ice between now and then. Kevin knows this and has been drawing some tips from those on with the team that saw what Jujhar Khaira did last year to get drafted.
My conversation with Kevin demonstrates just how mature this teenager is and how prepared he is to make the sacrifices it is going to take to get to the next level.

PRINCE GEORGE, BC – Prince George Spruce Kings defenceman Kevin Guiltinan has been ranked by NHL Central Scouting in their mid season rankings of North American skaters eligible for 2013 NHL Entry Draft. Guiltinan is ranked 141st on the most recent list placing him as the third highest ranked defenceman and fifth among draft eligible players in the British Columbia Hockey League.
Guiltinan is a big powerful defenceman that has made an impact on the Spruce Kings blue line since being acquired from the Vernon Vipers earlier in the season. From London, Ontario, Guiltinan is a 6’ 03” 205 lbs seventeen year old BCHL rookie who has already secured a scholarship to Harvard University for the 2014-15 season.
"Kevin Guiltinan is a tremendous young man who plays the game the right way," said Spruce Kings General Manager, Mike Hawes. "He is very committed to the game and his team mates and is very deserving of being ranked by Central Scouting."
"It's very exciting for the organization to have another player ranked this season," added Hawes. "After the excitement of having Jujhar Khaira drafted by Edmonton last year, it is equally exciting that we may have a player drafted in back to back years."
"I'm not the most offensive player," admits Kevin Guiltinan. "I think what they like is my old-school style. I'm willing to do the little things, I'll go in front of pucks, I'll battle, I'll do anything for the team and I compete hard every game."
Prince George fans will have an opportunity to see Guiltinan's style once again this weekend when the Spruce Kings host Divisional rival, the Chilliwack Chiefs.

Vees punish Vernon Vipers on powerplay
Published: January 26, 2013
Jedd Soleway sniped the powerplay winner as the Penticton Vees grounded the Vernon Vipers 3-1 in B.C. Hockey League action Friday night at South Okanagan Events Centre.
Soleway, an 18-year-old Vernon product who was traded from the Viper den to Penticton in early December, added an assist on third star Wade Murphy’s insurance marker in the third period to earn first star in front of 2,400 fans.
The Vees (29-11-0-3), tied with the Victoria Grizzlies for first overall, have won five of six regular-season tilts against Vernon.
The Snakes are last in the Interior Division at 14-21-0-7 and trail the Salmon Arm SilverBacks (18-18-2-3) by six points for the final playoff berth.
Four of Vernon’s next five games are at Wesbild Centre, and assistant coach David Robinson says if they want to reach the post season they better start racking up some points.
“It’s very doable, we just have to keep playing hard and believing we can get in,” said Robinson.
“We do have some ground to make up, but they’re starting to believe in themselves. We’re trying to build an identity as a hard-working team. All the guys in the room just want to play.”
The Vipers begin their February schedule against the Coquitlam Express (17-24-1) Friday at Wesbild. The ‘Backs are in Vernon Saturday.
Cody DePourcq (8th goal) opened the scoring late in the first period, beating Austin Smith (28 saves) blocker side at 17:34. The speedy winger earned a free shot at net when Vernon d-man Bryce Eviston tumbled after stepping on a stick that was laying on the ice.
Soleway (11th) put the Vees up 2-0 in the fifth minute of the second period.
Vernon’s Mason Blacklock (12th) continued his hot streak when he buried a slick 2-on-1 feed from Liam Board midway through the frame.
Murphy (18th) sealed the win for Chad Katunar (26 saves) early in the final period.
“It wasn’t a bad effort,” said Robinson. “The game could have gone either way.
“We turned over the puck a few times and if you do that against a team like that it’s going to come back to bite you. Top team in the league; there’s a lot of skill over there.”
SNAKE BITES: Vernon forward Craig Martin returned to the lineup for the first time since breaking his leg in a mid-November game.

Vee Power Play Defeats Vipers:

Vee Power Play Defeats Vipers
Saturday, January 26, 2013 - Submitted by Don Klepp
Despite a solid overall effort in Penticton on Friday, the Vipers surrendered power play goals to Jedd Soleway and Wade Murphy in a 3-1 loss.
The Vipers matched the Vees in total scoring chances and dominated the opening 10 minutes but were unable to solve goalie Chad Katunar in plays around the net. At the other end, Austin Smith had another strong game in the Viper net, especially in a run-and-gun second period.
Diminutive Cody DePourcq opened the scoring at 17:34 of the first period, collecting a puck at centre ice and scooting past Bryce Eviston on the left wing. DePourcq’s shot beat Smith high.
The Vipers did well to kill off two penalties in the first period but Jedd Soleway scored with Geoff Crisfield in the box at 5:25 of the second. After the Vipers failed on three clearing attempts, the ex-Viper swept through the left faceoff circle and unleashed a low shot just inside Smith’s right goal post.
On a similar play in the third period, Wade Murphy got away from TJ Dumonceaux along the left boards, cut into the slot and fired a bullet over Smith’s left shoulder.
Mason Blacklock gave his team reason to hope at 8:49 of the second period when his quick shot from the slot caught Katunar flat footed. Blacklock was set up by Liam Board, who won a race to the puck deep in the Vee zone and flicked a pass right onto Blacklock’s stick.
Several times in the middle frame, the Vipers set up shop in Penticton’s end. They created 9 scoring chances in the 20 minutes but were unable to score the equalizer.
The third period was different as the Vees battened down the hatches. The Vipers were credited with only three shots on goal in the period and none on a late power play.
On balance, the deciding factor in the contest was the Vees’ two power play goals on their third and fourth opportunities with the man advantage. During their two power plays the Vipers generated only one scoring chance.
Snake Bytes:
After a prolonged absence, Craig Martin returned to the Viper lineup. He didn’t get an opportunity to showcase his scoring skills, but he dished out several hits in one of his more physical games as a Viper.
Once again, scoring the first goal proved critical for both teams. The Vipers are 12-4-0-5 when scoring first and 1-17-0-2 when they do not. The Vees are just 9-9-0-1 when they surrender 7he first goal but a whopping 21-0-1-1 when they open the scoring.
Jason Bird and Braedan Russell sat out with injury.

Mike Collins scored two goals and an assist for the Warriors
NORTH ANDOVER, MA - Behind a three-point night from junior Mike Collins (Boston, Mass.), the Merrimack hockey team defeated the #4 UNH Wildcats in front of a sold out Lawler Arena on Friday night by the score of 3-2. With the win, the Merrimack senior class ties last year's senior class for the most wins in school history.
The last time Merrimack defeated a top-five team was October 30, 2010 when the Warriors beat #2 Boston College by the score of 4-2 at Lawler Arena.
Merrimack (10-9-5, 8-5-2 HEA) will travel to Manchester, NH to take on the #4 UNH Wildcats again tomorrow night at the Verizon Wireless Center. Puck drop is set for 5:00 p.m. WGAM will be hosting a Merrimack hockey pregame party from Jillian's, right across the street from the Verizon Wireless Center from 2-4 p.m.
With the win, Merrimack is now tied with Providence for fourth place in the Hockey East standings with one game-in-hand on the Friars and two points behind Boston University for third place in the Hockey East.
The Warriors registered the game-winning goal just seven seconds into the third period as freshman Brian Christie (West Chester, PA) won the opening draw and it ended up on the stick of Jordan Heywood (Regina, SK) who skated in over the line and found Christie in between the circles. Christie took the pass and unleashed a quick wrist shot over the blocker of the UNH goaltender for the winning goal. Heywood and Collins picked up assists on Christie's fourth goal of the season.
Merrimack opened the scoring with one minute to play in the first period as leading scorer, Collins, deposited his first goal of the night and 12th of the season. Collins took a feed from Quinn Gould (Fort McMurray, AB) and beat Jeff Wyer over the shoulder. Christie also picked up an assist on the Collins tally.
The Wildcats scored back-to-back goals early in the second period to take the 2-1 lead just 9:40 into action. Eric Knodel scored the first goal as his bouncing shot from the point beat Sam Marotta (Bridgewater, Mass.) over his left shoulder. A couple minutes later, Casey Thrush found the back of the net after a Connor Hardowa pass.
Collins didn't waste any time to respond with the tying goal as he took the puck behind the net, skated out front looking to the point and fired a shot just inside the post to beat Wyer. The assists on the goal again went to Christie and Gould.
After the quick Merrimack goal in the third, the two teams went back and forth with the Warriors holding the 13-6 advantage in the third in shots on goal. The Wildcats pulled their goalie with just over a minute to play in the game but they were not able to beat Marotta.
Collins added to his team leading 27 points by adding three more tonight while Christie recorded his first-career three point game in the win. Gould also picked up first-career two assist game. Collins now leads the Hockey East in conference points with 25 points in conference action.
Marotta continued to stand tall for the Warriors finishing with 29 saves in his seventh win of the season. Wyer made 32 saves in the losing effort for UNH.
Both teams finished the game going 0-3 on the power play with four shots on goal.
Merrimack improves to 6-2-3 in their last 11 games and 16-2-6 over the last two seasons when leading after one period of play.

Mike Foss, USA TODAY Sports
January 14, 2013
Nyjer Morgan's Twitter account began posting several unflattering tweets around 7 p.m. on Monday night.
The Milwaukee Brewers outfielder's account announced to his following of over 85,000 that he had been unfaithful to his girlfriend.
"I did something horrible today nation I cheated on my girlfriend," the initial tweet began. "I ruined her life and I will pay the price for this I loved her but was bad"
The account fired off two more messages in similar fashion:
"She caught me as much as I loved her I'm just a cheater I'm sorry"
"The truth will come out"
Morgan's account also changed its bio section to read:
"This is dedicated to my x girlfriend that i cheated on and left in the streets this page was changed by me"
Approximately an hour after the first tweet surfaced, Morgan tweeted the following explanation:
"What's good nation? NEWS ALERT! My account was hacked! I'm in the process of changing all my info and starting a new account! AAAAHHHH!"
Morgan fired of two more tweets assuring his followers of his happiness and anticipation for the 2013 MLB season, including his Twitter trademark 'AHHHH GOTTA GO' sign off.
"This is the real T-Plush! You won't see anymore of those nonsense tweets! AHHHH GOTTA GO!!!!"
"My life is fantastic right now! Can't Wait for Baseball Season!"
Regardless of the circumstance, there is no question the entire exchange was uncomfortable and unfortunate. To hopefully insure his account would never been stolen again, Morgan confirmed he changed his password.
"I just changed my password. I hope this works! AAAHHH!"

Vipers Surge On Island:
Vipers surge on Island

Anytime you have three teammates up for B.C. Hockey League’s Gongshow Player of the Week, it usually means good things are happening.
That was the case for the Vernon Vipers, as the
y collected four of six points, narrowly missing a three-game Vancouver Island road sweep after falling 1-0 to the Victoria Grizzlies in a Sunday matinee.
The 14-20-0-7 Snakes brushed back the Cowichan Valley Capitals 3-1 a night earlier in Duncan.
Newcomer Mason Blacklock received POW honours after turning in consecutive first-star efforts, starting with a four-point showing in Friday’s 6-4 win over the Nanaimo Clippers. The White Rock product followed that with a goal and an assist against the Caps.
“He’s only going to get better,” said Vipers’ head coach Jason Williamson. “The character is starting to shine through with that kid. He took a pretty good hit (from Victoria’s Brett Hartscamp) and was still able to bounce back and was pretty good after that.”
POW honourable mentions went to Andrew Tegeler (six points, second star selection), and netminder Austin Smith.
“We’re just trying to keep it simple,” said Blacklock, of his line of Tegeler and Dexter Dancs. “We’re three big, pretty fast guys which helps. I was given a good opportunity and I’m just trying to make the most of it. Things are going well.”
Smith, a Calgary product, backstopped Vernon in the win over Cowichan, and ended the weekend with a .971 save percentage, 1.01 goals-against average and a pair of second star recognitions.
“He was back to his old self,” said Williamson. “He made some great stops early (versus Caps) and gave us some life.”
Myles Fitzgerald, with his 22nd goal, was the lone player to find the scoresheet Sunday, beating Smith with a turn-around slapshot from the slot in the third period. The first-overall Grizz improved to 28-9-0-4.
“We were running on fumes but it was a good hockey game and our guys showed a lot of guts and determination,” said Williamson.
Colton Sparrow (5th goal) and Dexter Dancs (5th) rounded out the scoring against the last-place Capitals (9-25-1-3). Smith had 30 saves for his 10th win.
Jamie Waddington handled Cowichan’s attack as Connor LaCouvee (28 saves) took the loss.
Vernon (14-20-0-7) visits the Interior-leading Penticton Vees (28-11-0-3) for their lone weekend tilt Friday at the South Okanagan Events Centre. They trail the Salmon Arm SilverBacks (18-17-2-3) for the final Interior playoff spot by five points.
“We have two games against Salmon Arm (Feb. 2 and Feb. 22),” said Williamson. “If we win those two, it’s real tight. There’s 30 points still up for grabs and that’s what we have to focus on right now.”
In other BCHL Interior action Saturday night, Vernon’s Alex Gillies scored the equalizer and OT winner as the ‘Backs bounced the host Trail Smoke Eaters 4-3.
Tyler Steel, another Vernon native, netted his fourth shutout with a 26-save performance as the Merritt Centennials slammed the Coquitlam Express 5-0 at Nicola Valley Arena.
Regan Soquila led the Merritt offence with two goals and an assist, while Sean Maktaak chipped in with three helpers.
Merritt (22-12-1-2) and the West Kelowna Warriors (18-11-3-8) are tied for second in the Interior.
SNAKE BITES: Injured Viper forward Craig Martin is back skating with the team and is questionable for Penticton. If not, Williamson said he is likely to play the following weekend...The Grizz were without suspended players Kade Pilton, Keyler Bruce and ex-Viper Turner Lawson Sunday. The trio are serving suspensions for their part in a post-game brawl in a Jan. 12 tilt with the Chilliwack Chiefs.
