The mass exodus of "return eligible players" continues. The players are clearly voting on what they think of the Vipers organization, or lack of organization!!! What a pathetic situation!!! What elite hockey talent will chose Vernon as a option for their hockey development? If this doesn't get the attention of Tom Glen there is something drastically wrong. For heavens sake Tom, get the broom out and start using it. It is unbelievable how a "supposedly" successful business man allows this business to be run into the ground by incompetence. It is also inconceivable to me why other Vernon businesses support (through rink board ads) and create partnerships (giveaways, theme nights, etc) with this organization.
Still no coach! Season is 2 months away and there are no players confirmed apparently! How would any legitimate player even consider this organization? Going to be another incredibly disappointing season. I feel bad for the players who will show up and then realize they’ve made the mistake of a lifetime.
The coach was here for the end of May camp, and I think that he still might be here. BUT...... he doesn't have a contract. The team figures it's just as well to have him working day to day without a contract, like a car salesman, and can be fired at any time without having to pay off the contract. Brilliant business. What PR geniuses!
BCHL season runs June 1 to May 31, games start September 19
It’s inconceivable to you? Did you see attendance numbers in comparison to other BCHL teams last season? That’s a lot of eyeballs, it’s smart advertising. How about giving the marketing team some credit?
It’s unfortunate there is so much speculation and very little truth being circulated.
Wow this is brutal, another player leaving. It wouldn't surprise me to see more players leave
What is unfortunate is the fact that the Vipers don’t give out any facts!
I agree with you. However it won’t matter how many times people complain about their complete lack of transparency, nothing will change. History with this ownership has proven it. The front office can only provide information that the owners approve, it’s that simple.
I thought Ideback played well in a couple of games but didn't stand out on most nights. Players always come and go during the summer. Some teams lose players to the Western Hockey League, others get traded, some ask to be traded, others move on to college or University hockey and some pack it in and move on with life but what really concerns me the most this summer, is what looks like nine players have left the Vipers recently and no players have replaced these kids that have left. Almost every team has or is announcing player signings, players committing for the 2025-26 season, trades etc and yet not a word on one single player either signing with the Vipers or committing to play for the Vipers this coming season. With all these players leaving within the past week or two, have the Vipers even signed anyone or committed to anyone? We wouldn't know as the Vipers haven't said a word regarding the 2025-26 season. No player signings, no player commitments etc We don't know who is returning from last season if anyone is returning? The way the summers going, maybe more players are going to leave. The Vipers pr/social media is a joke! Thanks to the league website, we know the Vipers made two trades on June 1st, but the Vipers can't even announce those trades. The Vipers want fans to come out to games, buy season tickets, purchase merchandise etc but yet can't keep their customers/fans in the loop regarding the team. That's disrespectful and a slap in the face to the longtime dedicated fanbase. You often hear the word or term culture change come out in hockey. Reporters, fans, hockey teams talk about culture change often. The culture has to change with the Vipers and changes need to be made or we can expect the same average to mediocre teams for years to come.
Well another player leaving. All these players leaving speaks volumes about the organization. What's next from the Glens. Another self serving press release saying everything is on track. Ya right.
It’s impossible to have a culture when there is no coach. Lomicky is out and no new coach to this point. Lomicky told players who asked for trades that he was no longer with the team and could not help. So these players are signing in other leagues and the Vipers get nothing for them. Oh, the Vipers hold their rights. Good luck getting anything of value when the kid is playing in another league. Just another example of the mismanagement of this organization. It would be laughable if it wasn’t so sad.
Any updates from the ID camp that just happened?
Who said the Vipers were having a camp this weekend?
Happened Thurs and Fri I believe...heard a couple of last year players Harvey and gibson there along with a bunch of local kids. Not sure if there was a new coach was there but John and mccammond were
Once again the Vipers leaving fans in the dark. I'm sure some fans would have liked to go or check it out if we knew about it. Why couldn't the Vipers post something?
Likely because there’s no coach and it’s a complete embarrassment at this point. Also likely that the pool of available players is dwindling by the day and they probably couldn’t get anyone of top junior talent to show up.
Is it possible that, given the poor attitude of the fan base as of late, they didn’t really want that negative energy around?
One may call it poor attitude, others may call it frustration, especially those of us who know some players and others associated with the team. The way the organization has changed since Duncan Wray owned the team is not encouraging. The way players were treated last year was terrible and a huge reason for the huge turnover and lackluster play most nights. Fans want a team with a fairly consistent roster throughout the season and players treated well who play hard for a coach and owner that truly care about them.
I suppose anything is possible but that would mean there’s been engagement with the fan base. And we all know there’s been none since the big announcement about the disappointing state of affairs. They’re in a nosedive position and can’t get out of it. The only hope is that the league talent (as a whole) has been diminished with players signing in other leagues so maybe they’ll be able to compete. Doubt it but let’s hope.
They may not want our negative attitude but they will sure want our money. My prediction is Vernon to the KIJHL by 2026-27 season.
With one of the best attendance figures in the league? Sorry, that’s a pretty far out there prediction
How long will that last? Players have been mistreated and look what’s happened. The fan exit will be next. I don’t care if it’s a cheap night out with good concession stands. If the team stinks and management never communicates with the fan base, the fans will find other things to do. I know I will.
If the Vipers can't take the negativity then smarten up and give us a better team to watch, plain and simple
Maybe you will, but with a pretty consistent crowd of 1,800-2,000 fans per game while they were losing all season long…well, again, your prediction holds no weight. Teams don’t move to the KIJHL because of Win/Loss records…they move because of poor attendance. And that’s not happening. And evidence from last season suggests the fans will keep coming
If the fans can’t handle an off year or two, maybe grow up and stop being so entitled, or stay home. We can’t win every year, every team has down years, but for some reason here in Vernon, everyone loses their minds if we’re aren’t at or near the top of the standings.
It's hockey, of course you can't win every year. The Vipers have had ups and downs before but never has a shit show lasted this long. There are far too many credible negative stories coming for players and that is what has frustrated the fans. Players turning their backs on this team indicates a lot.
When this owner took over this team he immediately fired one of the more respected and successful coaches we have ever had. They hired a candidate with no record of success, let a complete incompetent make recruiting/roster decisions and gifted a roster stop to a family "Junior B player at best". So maybe you haven't been following the Vipers long enough to realize why fans are upset so maybe do some homework. The last 5 years has been an embarrassment and it only appears to be getting worse. What other BCHL team has made zero player announcements to start people thinking positively about the upcoming season? Agree or not, the paying customers are entitled to hear something.
There will be plenty more. Even the heartiest of fans have a breaking point. And it’s much more palatable when the team is making moves to try to get better and the fans can see it happening. That is simply not the case here. The owner is treating this like a side hustle and it shows. Still no coach announcement despite 2 ID camps. No player announcements. Still have the fired coach listed on the website. Just a complete lack of attention to the most basic things. Embarrassing!
Cheered for the team since 1980. Thus, done enough homework to know there were sub par years, amazing years, and lately, disappointing years. But I also know entitlement when I see it, and the fans have to take a pause before laying judgement. Be patient. This negative vibe isn’t fair to whatever players ARE coming in. For God’s sake, give the kids a fighting chance to win your heart without crapping all over them before the puck even drops on game one.
Yes, we do have a sense of "entitlement". I suppose it is natural to feel entitled after supporting a very successful organization run by a classy individual. Dr Wray bought and funded this team but left the hockey decisions to people who excelled in their jobs, real hockey people. He recognized that being passionate about hockey did not put him in a position to make the best player decisions. He had a competent staff to scout, recruit, coach and manage the players who chose to play for his team. He was also passionate about supporting his players, treating them with respect and preparing them for life, whether hockey or schooling, after their time with the Vipers. He was well respected as witnessed by the number of players returning to visit who also encouraged others to play here. We see little of that respect and integrity from the current owner. So yes, we were spoiled and feel entitled to have a "respected" and "respectful" organization to cheer for. When no eligible players chose to return and there is no mention of players coming we are concerned and respond with negativity. I suppose that is human nature. The faithful paying customers deserve some positives from the team. Oh and no one is crapping on the players, we want them to succeed.
I don’t disagree with a lot of what you said…other than the “no one is crapping on the players”. They are. Just follow some of the comments. Be positive, everyone. Negativity doesn’t fix anything.
I’m sure most of us would love to be positive. The problem is that management hasn’t given us one thing to be positive about. That’s kind of the whole point to the negativity. It’s really not that hard to make some announcements about a new coach being hired or players that have committed for next year. Those things encourage positivity from the fans but it doesn’t happen so what do you expect. Especially, when every other team is announcing players daily. It’s very disappointing for loyal fans.
Exactly!!! Well said.
I would like to thank everyone for leaving comments but I would like to see fans use a name, nickname or initials etc instead of using Anonymous. I like to see who is leaving comments, how often are they leaving comments and when replying to a comment from Anonymous it's difficult to know what Anonymous your replying too. Thank you for visiting my blog and taking the time to leave comments.
Geezer--Anonymous....Your automatically assuming that the Vipers management is keeping the faithful in the dark...what if there is NO COACH to announce, or NO recruits confirmed or announced, until a new coach is in place..If you had a kid looking to play in the BCHL, would you commit to any team, not knowing whom the coach is ??? Lots of speculation, but no real facts are known.
No matter what the reason behind the Vipers making no announcements this summer, the team could at least show some respect to their fans/season ticket holders/sponsors and give some kind of an update every now and again. Below are some questions they could answer for the fans.
Is the same coaching staff from last season returning? Or are we looking for a new staff?
When is the new scoreboard getting installed?
Are there any player signings or player commitments?
When is training camp?
How many players are eligible to return and if so, who will be returning from last season?
What kind of team can we expect this season? Any idea who will be captain?
Even if you have nothing, give the fans something. (Example) Hey as of right now we haven't signed any players for the upcoming season but we are currently looking at some prospects/players from our Spring Camp and will make some future announcements.
Advice to the Glens is that if owning the team is. no fun anymore and is more of a headache and a pain the ass then maybe it is time to sell the team and move on to other things.
Interesting point Bingo.....curious what the Valuation of the present BCHL teams would be today, considering the present hockey landscape, especially since leaving Hockey Canada. Perhaps you should slide by the Vipers office, put your bid in ???
