Dylan Walchuk of the Vernon Vipers is among eight B.C. Hockey League players named to the Team West roster for the Canadian Junior Hockey League Prospects Event, Dec. 7-9, in Winkler, Man.
Walchuk, a rookie forward, has 13 goals and 38 points in 31 games with the Vipers. He secured a university scholarship to Northern Michigan for the 2011-12 season while with the Junior B Nelson Leafs last year.
Defenceman Nick Amies of Enderby, traded by Vernon to the Cowichan Valley Capitals last week, was also named to the 20-man roster.
Team West will play Team East in an afternoon game Dec. 8 with a re-match going the next night.
“The CJHL Prospects Game was created (five years ago) to showcase the top-40 NHL draft-eligible players in the Canadian Junior Hockey League,” said Jeff Dubois of the BCHL.
Goalie Sean Bonar and d-man Joey Laleggia of the Penticton Vees, blueliner Tim Daly of the Langley Chiefs and forwards Grayson Downing (Westside Warriors), Beau Bennett (Penticton) and Brayden Jaw (Nanaimo Clippers) round out the BCHLers with Team West.
Meanwhile, the Vipers remain No. 1 in the CJHL weekly top-20 despite losing in overtime to Westside Friday night.
The Spruce Grove Saints are No. 2 at 26-3-1-2, followed by the Dauphin Kings of Manitoba at 26-3-1-2 and the Kingston Voyaguers of Ontario at 27-2-1.
The Vees, who visit the Vipers Friday night, are fourth at 25-4-0-2. Westside lost 4-3 in overtime to the last-place Williams Lake Timberwolves Saturday night at home.
