The North Okanagan Knights welcomed new head coach Dave Dupas to Armstrong with a 9-5 Kootenay International Junior Hockey League win over the Penticton Lakers Saturday night.
Dupas, who coached the Major Midget Okanagan Rockets last year and began this season with the BCHL Williams Lake Timberwolves, replaced Eddie Johnstone.
The Knights, an expansion franchise, improved to 4-21-0-2, third-last in the 17-team league.
“I appreciate everything Eddie did for the hockey club, and I enjoyed getting to know him,” said Knights’ president Bill Greene, who handed over GM duties to vice-president Chuck Gallacher of Lake Country.
The rookie-laden Knights competed for the most part, but lost 9-0 last Wednesday to the Chase Chiefs and 7-0 to the host Princeton Posse Friday night (first game without Johnstone).
“I really, really enjoyed working with the kids,” said Johnstone, a 55-year-old former NHL all-star winger who guided the Vernon Lakers to back-to-back Centennial Cup wins in 1990-91.
“I’m disappointed I didn’t get the chance to carry on. I think we had 14 one-goal losses so winning some of those would have helped.
“I tried to get them going in the right direction and teach them how to win, and it was coming.”
First star Colin Minardi supplied 3+1 for the Knights, while Bryon Maxwell scored twice and singles came from Trevor Fitzgerald (22nd), Mike Mace, Andrew Nichols and Reece Matheson. Shawn Holliday had two helpers.
Chris Hurry recorded 37 saves for the win.
Viper prospect Brendan Persley, Colton Schell, Ken Whitford, Hayden Trupp and Branden Redschlag replied for the Lakers, who dipped to 7-19-0-2.
The Knights host the Sicamous Eagles tonight at Nor-Val Sports Centre (7:00).
