Canada opens Spengler Cup with victory
Serge Aubin scored the decisive goal in the shootout and six different players found the back of the net in regulation time as Canada defeated Czech champions HC Energie Karlovy Vary 7-6 in the Spengler Cup opener for both clubs.
Mike Siklenka, Shawn Heins, Travis Roche, Kurtis McLean, Mark Bell and Alexandre Daigle, the Ottawa Senators' first-overall pick in the 1993 NHL entry draft, each scored for Canada, which boasts a roster comprised mostly of European-based players.
Jaroslav Kristek lead the offence for Karlovy Vary with two goals, while Michal Dobron, Dmitry Zyuzin, Lukas Pech, Jan Kostal each added singles.
David LeNeveu started the game for Canada and gave up five goals through 40 minutes, including four in a second period in which the teams combined for seven goals.
Wade Dubielewicz took over at the start the third period and allowed only Kostal's game-tying goal in with roughly seven minutes remaining in the frame. Dubielewicz later turned aside all three Karlovy Vary shooters in the shootout, including former NHLer Ziggy Palffy, for the victory.
Canada next plays Monday against host Davos, which posted a 3-2 victory against Dynamo Minsk in Saturday's other game.
