Cottonmouths sweep Havoc to advance to title series

The Columbus Cottonmouths' celebration after their 6-1 Southern Professional Hockey League playoff victory over the Huntsville Havoc was tempered by the realization that there is one more goal they need to achieve.

The Snakes advance to the league championship series for the first time since raising the Southern Professional Hockey League's inaugural President's Cup on April 1, 2005. With their series sweeps of Louisiana and Huntsville, the Cottonmouths punched their ticket to the finals.

The Snakes will face the winner of the Knoxville-Pensacola series. Pensacola took a 1-0 lead in their best-of-three series. Game 2 is tonight in Pensacola.

The tentative schedule for the first round will see the top-seeded Snakes open the series at home Thursday night. Game 2 would be in Knoxville on Friday or Pensacola on Saturday. If a third game is necessary, it would be at the Columbus Civic Center on Sunday.

"We're excited," veteran Orrin Hergott said. "At the same time, this is just another step. It doesn't matter who we play. If we play our game, we'll be fine."

Hergott is the lone remaining member of the 2004-2005 championship squad. In the twilight of his career, Hergott relishes the opportunity these Snakes earned.

"It's different for me," Hergott said. "All those years we got knocked out in the first round. Several times I thought we had the team to do it. Everybody bought into this from day one."

After posting a 5-0 road win in the series opener Wednesday night, the Snakes set the tone early with a pair of first-period goals.

Greg Beller, the team's leading scorer with 8 points in 4 games, started the scoring at the 11:52 mark of the first period and John Sullivan added the second exactly a minute later.

But it was Hergott's goal 47 seconds into the second period that put the Havoc in a deep hole. Huntsville could not recover from that large a deficit.

"To score one that early in the period is not the situation you want to put your team in," Huntsville coach Glenn Dutelleo said. "From that point on, we were trying to recover. Columbus doesn't give you too many opportunities. I thought Columbus was a better team than Augusta."

The scoring line of Hergott, Beller and Derek Pallardy chipped in 6 points. For the second straight night, the Snakes enjoyed balanced scoring. In game 1, a total of 9 players scored. In the series finale, 10 different players contributed.

"One of the reasons I came here is that I knew this was a team to contend," Pallardy said. "One of the keys was our depth. We don't have 1 or 2 guys you can shut down. The scoring is spread out, so it's tough to defend."

Defenseman Andrew Krelove is enjoying his first professional season. Krelove is leading the defense in playoff scoring with 5 points. More importantly, he and his teammates on the blue line have formed a fortress in front of goaltender Ian Vigier.

"We've just kept on rolling from the regular season," Krelove said."We're not doing anything different in the playoffs. We try to block as many shots as we can."

One Snakes goal had special significance. Rookie Jim Durham, who signed with the Snakes prior to the playoffs out of Buffalo State, scored his first professional goal. Durham had a pair of assists on Wednesday night.

The Snakes scored their first power play goals of the playoffs. Sam Bowles scored one in the second period and Beller added one in the opening minute of the third period. The penalty kill is still perfect in the playoffs, killing all 12 chances.

Vigier continues to be solid in goal. He is 4-0 in the playoffs, with one shutout. Vigier's goals-against average is 1.20 and save percentage .957.
