GRAND FORKS, N.D. - North Dakota's Matt Frattin has been named Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) Player of the Year, and teammate Chay Genoway has been named WCHA Outstanding Student-Athlete of the Year, highlighting the league's annual awards announced today.
Fratin and Genoway were also named to the All-WCHA first team, as was sophomore goalie Aaron Dell. Junior forward Jason Gregoire was named to the All-WCHA third team.
Frattin won the WCHA scoring title with 40 points (22 goals, 18 assists) in 28 league games, becoming UND's first scoring champion since Ryan Duncan in 2006-07. Frattin's 40 points during league play were the most by a Fighting Sioux since Jeff Panzer (49 points) and Bryan Lundbohm (40) in 2000-01.
Frattin enters the WCHA playoffs tied for the NCAA goal-scoring lead with 29. In 37 games this season, the Edmonton, Alberta, native leads the top-ranked Sioux in points (49), goals (29), power-play goals (nine), game-winning goals (four) and shorthanded goals (two). He is currently in the midst of his second nine-game point streak of the season, and earlier in the year he produced an eight-game goal-scoring streak that was the fourth-longest in school history.
Genoway is the first player in UND history to be a four-time All-WCHA selection. He was a second-team selection as a sophomore in 2007-08, a first-team pick as a junior and 2008-09 and a third-team pick last year despite having his initial senior season ended by an injury after nine games.
In 29 games this season, Genoway has six goals and 20 assists and is tied for fourth among WCHA defensemen in scoring despite having missed eight games. The Morden, Manitoba, native averaged 0.95 points per game during WCHA play, which ranked second among the league's defensemen. Genoway put together a 12-game point streak from Nov. 26 to Jan. 21, tying a 33-year old school record for longest streak by a defenseman. Genoway's 116 career points lead all active WCHA defensemen.
Genoway maintains a 3.558 cumulative grade point average and will graduate in May with a bachelor's degree in management. After missing most of last season with post-concussion syndrome, Genoway returned to UND last fall and recorded a 4.0 GPA in his first semester back. He is one of only three individuals to earn WCHA Scholar-Athlete honors four times (the others were Scott McCulloch of Colorado College from 2005-09 and Jenna Hewitt of Minnesota State from 2006-10), and is a national finalist for the 2011 Lowe's Senior CLASS Award.
Dell, a native of Airdrie, Alberta, was the WCHA goaltending champion after posting a league-best 1.97 goals against average during conference games. He also led the WCHA in league wins (24) and winning percentage (.812). It is the first all-conference honor for Dell, who is the first Sioux goalie since Karl Goehring in 1999-00 to be named to the All-WCHA first team.
In 33 overall games, Dell is tied for second in nation in wins (24), ranks second in GAA (1.95), third in winning percentage (.781) and is tied for fourth in shutouts (four). A two-time WCHA Defensive Player of the Week, Dell put together a shutout streak of 224 minutes, 31 seconds earlier this season, the second-longest in school history and the longest in nearly 60 years.
Gregoire earned his first All-WCHA award after scoring a career-high 21 goals and matching his career high with 37 points during the regular season. The Winnipeg, Manitoba, native finished second in the WCHA in goals per game and fourth in goals (18) during league play (0.75).

Gregoire enters the WCHA playoffs riding a career-long 12-game point streak, scoring 14 goals and 23 points during that time.
The WCHA also announced today its all-academic team, on which UND placed a school-record 16 student-athletes. Highlighting the list was Genoway, the first four-time selection in school history, and three-time recipients Brent Davidson (Sr., Morden, Manitoba), Derrick LaPoint (Sr., Eau Claire, Wis.) and Jake Marto (Sr., Grand Forks, N.D.).
"We are tremendously proud of the academic achievements of our student-athletes," said UND Athletics Director Brian Faison. "As accomplished as they are on the ice, they have been equally successful in the classroom. That is a testament to the hard work, commitment and discipline of not only the student-athletes, but their coaches as well."
UND's other WCHA All-Academic selections included two-time recipients Ben Blood (Jr., Plymouth, Minn.), Brad Eidsness (Jr., Chestermere, Alberta), Matt Frattin (Sr., Edmonton, Alberta), Jason Gregoire (Jr., Winnipeg, Manitoba), Brett Hextall (Jr., Manhattan Beach, Calif.), Mario Lamoureux (Jr., Grand Forks, N.D.), Brad Malone (Sr., Miramichi, New Brunswick), and Tate Maris (So., Denver, Colo.), as well as first-time selections Brett Bruneteau (So., Omaha, Neb.), Ryan Hill (So., Hermantown, Minn.), Andrew MacWilliam (So., Calgary, Alberta) and Carter Rowney (So., Sexsmith, Alberta).
