Reaney's Two-Goal Night Helps Thunder Jump Back into First Place
Posted on December 9, 2012
Wichita, KS (December 9th) – Les Reaney has scored goals in bunches for the Thunder since joining the team in early November. On Sunday afternoon, his two-goal outing pushed the Thunder (14-7-2) past the Quad City Mallards by the final of 3-1 at INTRUST Bank Arena. Wichita moves back into first place with the win, one point ahead of idle Allen. Kevin Regan was stellar in net, earning his ninth victory of the season. Wichita leads the season-series 2-1-1 with two more meetings in the next three weeks against the Mallards.
Neil Trimm got things started for the Thunder, scoring his fourth goal in three games in the first period. Ian Lowe made a nice play at the Mallards blue line to get the puck over to Trimm and he followed that up with a highlight reel toe-drag move and wrister that beat Murray to make it 1-0 at the 13 minute mark of the first.
In the second, Reaney recorded both of his goals 1:23 apart. His first came at 6:26 when Ryan Flanigan got the puck over to him across the crease and Reaney put it past Murray from behind the goal line to push the lead to 2-0. Flanigan made a great play on the second goal scored by Reaney at 7:49 to make it 3-0. After the puck slid off his backhand all the way into the Mallards zone, Flanigan got to it first and found Reaney cutting down the slot where he put home his seventh goal of the season.
The Mallards scored a power play goal in the third period at the five minute mark from Patrik Levesque to cut the lead to 3-1. Wichita would clamp down the rest of the way and earned their 10th all-time victory over Quad City.
Reaney has scored two goals in three separate games after tonight's effort and has seven on the year. Flanigan finished with two assists on the night. With the win, Regan takes over the league-lead in wins (9), stopping 27 of 28 shots. Over his last eight starts, he is 6-1-1.
Wichita went 0-for-3 on the power play while the Mallards were 1-for-2.
