thoughts on how I saw tonight’s game. I try to be unbiased and give a fare recap

I was at tonight's BCHL game as Alberni Valley defeated Vernon 4-3 in front of 1,634 fans at the Wesbild Centre.
Starting Goaltenders:
Vernon: Austin Smith
Alberni Valley: Jay Deo
1st Period: Just 1:51 into the opening period Ryan Lough alone in front put a nice move around Austin Smith giving Alberni Valley a 1-0 lead. Evan Tironese and Dylan Haugen collected the assists. Just after the goal the Bulldogs would get their first powerplay of the night but a decent penalty kill by Vernon would kill off the minor. I thought the 1st period was very scrambled at times with not alot of flow to the game. Both teams didnt get alot of scoring chances in the opening period as it took the Vipers just over five minutes to record their first shot on goal wich resulted in the game tying goal after Braeden Russell was stopped by Jay Deo Liam Board went upstairs tying the game 1-1 at 5:09 as the teddy bears hit the ice on the Vipers annual teddy bear toss night. Russell & Dexter Dancs picked up the assists. A very chippy game with several scrums happening after the stopages of play as both teams didnt seem to like each other. Jared Wilson setup Ryan Lough on a Bulldogs two on one but Lough was stopped by Austin Smith. Mitch McAllister would get a breakaway but couldnt get a shot off after a very solid defensive play by Kurt Gosselin breaking up the breakaway. Just after the midway mark Brendan Persley and Mitch Crisanti dropped the gloves in a hurry right after a faceoff. Both players would get tossed from the hockey game for staging the fight. Alberni Valley would get their second powerplay of the game late and capitalize. Two big saves by Austin Smith who was down and out couldnt stop Ryan Lough on the rebound who beat Smith upstairs with his second of the night at 17:81 giving the Bulldogs a 2-1 lead. Matthew Hansen Kurt Gosselin picked up the helpers. Not even a minute later Brandon Halls setup Matthew Hansen who beat Smith at 18:17 giving Alberni Valley a 3-1 lead. Halls & Chris Tracy with the assists. The first half of the period was pretty scrambled but Alberni Valley had the slight edge in play in the second half. The Bulldogs with a 3-1 lead after 20 minutes of play. Alberni Valley outshot Vernon 12-7.
2nd Period: The Vipers come out with a much stronger performance in the middle frame as Vernon got off to a quick start. Vernon showing alot more urgency and energy in the middle frame. With some pressure early and often Adam Tambellini was setup at the circle just missing the far corner. The Vipers with five quick shots in the opening few minutes evened the shots on goal. It took the Dogs almost five minutes to get their first shot of the period before they come right back with a good push. Alberni Valley now the team with some pressure but the Dogs couldnt muster any real good chances. Adam Tambellini, Andrew Tegeler & Dexter Dancs with some nice give and go passing setup Dancs with his first goal as a Viper getting Vernon to within a goal at 7:30 Tambellini & Tegeler with the helpers. This goal gave Vernon some life as the Vipers really stepped up their play and carried the better of the play for most of the second period. Andrew Tegeler setup Liam Board on a Viper two on one but Jay Deo come across making a nice save keeping this game 3-2. With a mad scramble in front of the Bulldogs goal a quick whistle with the puck still loose in the crease saved Alberni Valley from maybe a game tying goal. Again a very chippy period with lots of pushing and shoving going on after the whistles. Vernon was the better of the two teams in the first half. Just past the midway mark the Vipers would get their first powerplay of the night. Defenceman Kurt Gosselin played a solid game on the Dogs blueline coming up with three huge shot blocks before getting a shorthanded two on one. Gosselin couldnt beat Austin Smith who made the save. The Dogs would take another penalty giving the Vipers a late two man advantage. Aaron Hadley with a parcial breakaway couldnt slide the puck around Deo missing the net after Jared Wilson was right behind the Viper forward. Alberni Valley with a big penalty kill would kill off both penalties. The Vipers outplayed the Dogs and carried the better of the play but were down 3-2 after 40 minutes of play. Vernon outshot Alberni Valley 12-8.
3rd Period: For the second straight period Vernon come out ready to go and again got off to a good start. It took the Vipers just 4:20 to tie the game after Brett Corkey carried the play in dishing off to Dexter Dancs who setup Andrew Tegeler with his first goal as a Viper. Corkey and Dancs with the assists. The Vipers really generating some good quality chances especially in the 2nd and 3rd periods. Just a few minutes later Jon Brumwell dropped the mits with Logan Mick. Adam Tambellini on a three on two couldnt beat Jay Deo on a nice give and go with Dexter Dancs and Andrew Tegeler. The Vipers were the better team in the first half but give the Bulldogs credit they battled back coming back with a few chances in the second half. Austin Smith made a tough save off a high shot from the point, with the puck up in the air Smith had to be sharp making a save off the rebound on Manny Gialedakis. Just a few minutes later Smith stopped Dylan Haugen on a Alberni Valley three on two rush. With four and a half minutes remaining the Bulldogs would get a very questionable call giving the Dogs a late man advantage. Tryg Strand was stopped by Smith who couldnt close the fivehole in time after Jon Brumwell poked the loose puck fivehole on Smith at 17:34 giving Alberni Valley a 4-3 lead. With the Vipers down a goal they couldnt really generate much offence. After calling a timeout and getting Austin Smith to the bench for the extra attacker with a minute remaining the Vipers would get a late powerplay but a very aggressive forecheck by the Dogs would kill off the remainder of the clock and come away with a 4-3 victory. The Vipers were the better of the two teams but come up short. Vernon outshot Alberni Valley 15-10.
Top Players: (Vernon)
Aaron Hadley I thought showed alot of hustle and hard work in the 2nd and 3rd periods and played hard most of the night.
Andrew Tegeler (1 goal & 1 assist) Made his Vipers home debut and looked very good. Tegeler who made his Viper debut last night in West Kelowna played very well at both ends of the rink. A bigger kid who can skate, handle the puck and move the puck as well as create chances.
Pearce Eviston played one of his better games in a while. Eviston played hard and battled hard most of the night.
Dexter Dancs (1 goal & 2 assists) Im beggining to like the addition of Dexter Dancs. He has looked pretty good in three games with Vernon so far after coming over in a trade last week with Penticton. A big kid who can also skate and move the puck well. Goes to the net and creates opportunities.
Liam Board (1 goal) Played very well tonight. Went to the net and played well up front on two different lines.
Game Thoughts: (Vernon)
The Vipers have dropped three straight but played their best game of this three game weekend. Vernon didnt get off to the start they wanted falling behind 1-0 early and then down 3-1 after the opening period. But give the boys credit they really stepped up their play, battled back tying the game before falling short late. I thought Vernon played a very good 2nd and 3rd period showing alot more urgency and energy. This being the teams third game in as many nights you would expect them to slowly get tired and run out of gas as the game went on. This was a tough loss in a game where I thought the Vipers were the better team especially in the final two periods. This was also the first game in a long time I can remember Vernon coming back down two goals to tie the game. Jason Williamson was really mixing up his lines tonight, going with several different line combinations. The Vipers still with too many turn overs through out tonights game. I thought Vernon's defensive game played and looked much better tonight over the last two games.
Top Players: (Alberni Valley)
Kurt Gosselin played a heck of a game on the Dogs backend. Blocking shots, jumping up into the rush, getting involved in the scoring chances. Gosselin was very strong defensively.
Chase Van Allen also played and looked very strong on the Alberni Valley blueline.
Dylan Haugen (1 assist) Played well up front for the Bulldogs. Was involved in the play and in and around the net.
Ryan Lough (2 goals) Was very good with and without the puck, always in and around the net. Really skates well and creates chances.
Evan Tironese (1 assist) Another player who really stood out for me tonight. Tironese was all over the ice, involved in the play and always in and around the goal.
Manny Gialedakis also played well for Alberni Valley.
Jay Deo (31 saves) Played very well between the pipes for the Dogs. Made some big saves and didnt give out alot of rebounds. Plays his position well.
Game Thoughts: (Alberni Valley)
I didnt think the 1st period was very good. Both teams with very little scoring chances played very chippy all night, getting involved in scrums after the whistle. The opening period was very scrambled at times with no real flow. Alberni Valley did play and look better in the second half of the 1st but wasnt the same team in the 2nd and 3rd. The Bulldogs built up a 3-1 lead and hung on for the 4-3 victory. The Dogs last win in Vernon was a 4-2 victory back on Friday, November 10th 2006. Alberni Valley skates well, moves the puck well and is quick.
