On June 2nd the East Coast Hockey League (ECHL) announced its Protected Lists as submitted by each of its member teams. The ECHL Wheeling Nailers have twenty four players listed on their protected list two of are former Vernon Vipers forwards Scott Zurevinski & Sahir Gill.
Former Vernon Vipers forward Sahir Gill finished his rookie season with the East Coast Hockey League (ECHL) Wheeling Nailers sixth in rookie scoring and lead the team in scoring collecting (13-goals-41-assists-54-points). Gill ended the regular season on a ten-game point streak lead the Nailers into the playoffs, leading the team with 41 assists and 54 points in just 44 games. The Nailers finished 2nd place in the Atlantic Division with a regular season record of 39-27-1-5.
Gill was suppose to enter his fourth and final season at Boston University this past season but left school signing with the Nailers early in the season. Gill played parts of two seasons in Vernon (2008-2010). Gill left the Vipers in July of 2009 for the United States Hockey League (USHL) Chicago Steel but after just 26 games would return to Vernon in mid January of 2010. In 71 regular season games with the Vipers Gill recorded (21-goals-30-assists-42-points).

Former Vernon Vipers forward Scott Zurevinski finished his second season with the East Coast Hockey league (ECHL) Wheeling Nailers. In 24 games this past season Zurevinski picked up (5-goals-5-assists-10-points). Zurevinski also spent time in the American Hockey League after signing a 25-game professional try out contract with the AHL Hamilton Bulldogs on December 5th 2013. Zurevinski was released after playing just three games finished the season in Wheeling.
Zurevinski finished his fourth year at Quinnipiac University (2011-12) before signing a amateur tryout contract with the AHL St. John’s IceCaps on March, 18th 2012. Zurevinski played in eight games with the IceCaps before being released.
Zurevinski signed with the American Hockey League (AHL) Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins in August of 2012 but never played a game as the Penguins sent Zurevinski down to the East Coast Hockey Leagues Wheeling Nailers. Zurevinski attended the Pittsburgh Penguins 2011 development camp.
Zurevinski played two years in Vernon (2006-2008). In 96 regular season games with the Vipers, Zurevinski collected (47-goals-47-assists-94-points).

Nailers Announce 2014 Protected List

WHEELING, WV- The Wheeling Nailers, proud ECHL affiliate of the Pittsburgh Penguins and Montreal Canadiens, have announced their first roster activity for the 2014 offseason. On Monday, the team produced its Protected List, completing the first of four key dates in the month of June.
Teams are allowed to protect as many players as they wish, provided the players protected meet the guidelines, as defined in the Collective Bargaining Agreement between the ECHL and the Professional Hockey Players' Association, which state that teams shall retain the rights to each player that:
1. Signed an SPC in 2013-14 with the Member, and has not been traded or released, OR
2. Signed an SPC in 2013-14, and was recalled to the NHL/AHL or IIHF team, and has not been traded or released, OR
3. Had received a Qualifying Offer last summer for the current Season, DID NOT sign an SPC, and has not been traded or released, OR
4. Has been suspended by the Member or League, and has not been traded or released, OR
5. Signed an SPC on or after the first day of the 2013-14 Regular Season, then subsequently signed an NHL/AHL contract, and has not been traded or released, OR
6. Has executed the ECHL Retirement Form, and has not been traded or released.
The announcement of the Protected List will lead into three more significant events in June. On June 13th, all trades including future considerations must be completed. Two days later, on June 15th, Season Ending Rosters must be submitted, which will feature no more than 20 players per team. Finally, on June 16th, teams will have the opportunity to sign players who are either on their Season Ending Roster or are Unrestricted Free Agents.
