I was at tonight's BCHL game as Vernon defeated Surrey 3-2 in double overtime in front of 1,682 fans at the Wesbild Centre.
Starting Goaltenders:
Vernon: Danny Todosychuk
Surrey: Glenn Ferguson
1st Period: The Vipers got off to a good start, just like last night were skating hard early and playing with some good jump & energy. Eagles starting goaltender Glenn Ferguson looked a little shaky early and often bobbling a few of Vernon's long shots. The Vipers come up with the games first good scoring opportunity after Brett Corkey's point shot was tipped in front by Jedd Soleway who couldnt beat Ferguson who made a nice pad save in close. Then Marc Hetnik jumped up into the play going in on a two on one tried feeding Jedd Soleway who couldnt connect on the pass. Michael Statchuk got turned around looking for a puck high in the air wich gave Mason Blacklock a two on one as Danny Todosychuk come up with a big save in close. Vernon would open the scoring after some hard work and battling along the end wall by Adam Tambellini who did all the work down low started the play before finding Pearce Eviston in the slot who one timed a quick low shot past Glenn Ferguson at 9:08 Tambellini & Logan Mick collected the helpers. The Eagles come right back a few shifts later after Nicolas Pierog went in on a two on one but couldnt beat Todosychuk in tight. Both teams looked fairly good in the opening period playing hard and hitting hard as a few big hits were delivered in the first period. Late in the 1st with the Eagles buzzing in and around the Vipers net Surrey thought they tied the game but the goal was waived off after the Eagles were being called for a penalty this giving the Vipers the games first powerplay late but it was Surrey who would capitalize on a Vipers turnover. Ryan Renz couldnt get the puck in deep wich gave the Eagles a two on one break back the other way Mason Blacklock kept and went high glove beating Danny Todosychuk shorthanded tying the game 1-1 at 17:05 Eric Chevrier picked up the lone assist. Vernon with not a very great looking powerplay was unable to capitalize as the Eagles killed off the minor. It was tied 1-1 after 20 minutes of play. I thought it was a fairly evenly played period. The Vipers outshot the Eagles 11-10.
2nd Period: The Eagles won the draw and got the play in deep off the opening faceoff, Nicolas Pierog with some hard work down low showed some good hustle before being stopped by Danny Todosychuk on the wrap around. On the next shift the Vipers would get the play in deep and come up with some early flurries in and around the Surrey net but couldnt hit the net missing on atleast two or three great chances in close. Bryce Eviston with a long dump in shot from centre ice hit Glenn Ferguson and almost bounced in as Ferguson bobbled the puck on a close call. Just after the hard work would pay off after moving the puck well, Marc Hetnik's point shot looked to be tipped-redirected on it's way to the net as the puck beat Glenn Ferguson giving Vernon a 2-1 lead at 4:30 Hetnik was credited with the goal as Craig Martin and Landon Robin got the assists. The Vipers looked good early and often carrying the better of the play. Mitch Van Teeling was stoned in the slot after Ferguson made a quick toe save off the Viper forward. Joel Gaudet & Stefan Burzan would get a two on one around the halfway mark, Gaudet would shoot but stopped by Todosychuk. Surrey slowly turned things around and come back in the second half of the period with some hard working shifts. The Eagles would get their first powerplay of the night late. Brady Shaw got through traffic and beat his man going towards the net, with a nice dangle in close was stoned by Todosychuk who made a nice toe save before Vernon would take another powerplay giving Surrey a long two man advantage. The Eagles with some good pressure moved the puck around but it was the Vipers penalty kill who also looked good almost having killed off both penalties former Westside Warrior Brett Mulcahy got Todosychuk going the other way, banked his shot in past Michael Statchuk as the puck looked to have just crossed the goal line at 18:53 tying the game 2-2. Colton Mackie with the lone assist. It was tied 2-2 after 40 minutes of play. I thought the Vipers were the better of the two teams especially in the first half getting the better of the scoring chances but somehow it was the Eagles that badly outshot Vernon 22-9. There was no way Surrey got 22 shots on goal that period.
3rd Period: Surrey come out hard in the final frame as the Vipers were back on their heels. An early point shot early fluttered changing direction a few times catching Danny Todosychuck going the other way before having to quickly come back the other way as the puck just went wide of the goal on a close call. Just a few minutes later Pearce Eviston come down the left wing and ripped a hard shot that beat Glenn Ferguson but went off the crossbar as Vernon come close to taking the lead. As the period went on there wasnt alot of opportunities at either ends of the rink as both teams didnt record any real good quality chances in a very tight checking defensive third period. The Vipers did have atleast two real good chances in close but again couldnt hit the net missing on both chances. In the final three minutes Marc Hetnik's long shot from just inside the Surrey blueline was stopped after Glenn Ferguson made a nice toe save off the Viper d-man. In the dying seconds Jedd Soleway tried feeding Craig Martin in front but a strong defensive play by the Eagles tied up Martin & another Viper on a close call. It was tied 2-2 after 60 minutes of play. Not alot of action in the final frame with very few scoring chances. Both teams played a very tight checking game giving neither team much room. Vernon outshot Surrey 11-9.
Overtime: Demico Hannoun off the opening draw skated in over the Vernon blueline before ripping a hard high shot through the slot that went off Todosychuk's stick, on the same play Adam Tambellini who saw a ton of ice tonight come right back the other way getting a good chance but couldnt beat Ferguson. Not alot of scoring opportunities as it was still tied 2-2 after 65 minutes of play. Shots were even 4-4.
Double Overtime: The ice really opened up as the play picked up with several chances at both ends. Just a minute and a half into the final period Mason Blacklock was rewarded a penalty shot but ended up missing the net on a great chance for the Eagles to extend their four game winning streak. Adam Tambellini had atleast three great open chances but missed the net going high and over on all three. Danny Todosychuk made a real nice quick pad save from in close off Michael Stenerson keeping this game tied. In the final minute the Vipers with a great chance had Glenn Ferguson down and out, Pearce Eviston tried setting up Adam Tambellini in front but somehow Ferguson reached across making a diving save off Tambellini and then stopping Eviston on the rebound. In the dying seconds Tambellini come down the right wing got in all along and snapped a quick shot from inside the circle but again went high and wide missing the goal. Tambellini stayed with the play, collected the rebound before going hard towards the net and snapped a quick shot that somehow got through Glenn Ferguson with just 5.4 seconds remaining on a goal that Ferguson would love to have back as the Vernon bench poured onto the ice. Vernon outshot Surrey 5-3.
Top Players: (Vernon)
Marc Hetnik (1 goal) Played a strong game on the Vipers blueline tonight. Looked good at both ends of the rink, jumped up into the play on a few occasions. Was really skating hard.
Adam Tambellini ( 1 assist & OT Winner) Just like last night the Vipers gave Tambellini a ton of icetime and were looking for him to carry the Vipers. Tambellini with several great chances but missed the net on most of them.
Logan Mick played with alot of jump as well as looked good with and without the puck. Made some real nice plays through out tonight's contest. Didnt see alot of icetime as the game went on late but I thought was one of the better Vipers tonight.
Danny Todosychuk (46 saves) Played very well between the pipes tonight. Played his position very well not giving up alot of rebounds. Looked calm and confident tonight.
Game Thoughts: (Vernon)
The Vernon Vipers debuted a special "one night only" jersey for tonight's game to represent Movember. I really liked the look and color of the jerseys and thought they were very sharp looking. Well for the second straight night and third of their last four games the Vipers went to overtime. With just two wins in overtime before tonight it wasnt looking good but the Vipers pulled out the huge win very late in the dying seconds beating one of the top teams on the mainland. After a very dissapointing loss last night to Trail it was nice to see the boys come back with a hard fought victory tonight. Vernon now has won four of their last six games and picked up three out of four points this weekend. I thought Vernon was the better of the two teams and had the better of the scoring plays. The Vipers need to work on hitting the net though, as they had a numerous amount of chances but missed the net. The Vipers penalty kill looked good and the team seems to be playing much more disciplined hockey as of late staying out of the penalty box. This was a huge win especially now heading on the road for four games. With the win and a Trail loss the Vipers move into 4th place just four points back of 3rd place West Kelowna.
Top Players: (Surrey)
The line of Brady Shaw, Demico Hannoun and Nicolas Pierog looked very good tonight. This line had some good chances and always coming up with opportunities. Pierog had several chances through out the night.
Jordan Klimek played well on the Eagles backend.
Colton Mackie played well up front, a good skater that is quick and always in and around the net.
Mason Blacklock (1 goal) Was another threat up front for Surrey. A bigger kid that can also skate and move the puck well.
Game Thoughts: (Surrey)
The Eagles made their first visit to Vernon in two years and havnt won at the Wesbild Centre since a 3-2 victory back on September, 26th 2007. Surrey's four game winning streak came to an end tonight after a tough double overtime loss. I thought the Eagles looked good at times but overall Vernon was the better of the two teams. Glenn Ferguson struggled between the pipes having all kinds of trouble fighting the puck tonight. They said Surrey outshot Vernon 22-9 in the 2nd period, there is no way the Eagles got 22 shots. I think the shots on goal were way off tonight.
