Adam Tambellini’s six points led the Vipers to a wild 7-5 victory in Coquitlam on Sunday afternoon.

One of his three goals and two of his assists came on the power play in a 6:34 stretch in the second period as the Vipers snapped out of the power play doldrums to go four for seven with the man advantage.

Pearce Eviston scored two of those power play markers in the second period and he added an empty netter with two Express players draped over him to secure the Viper win with 26 seconds remaining in the contest.

Eviston, who had been playing with Tambellini and Logan Mick on the first line, moved to centre on the second line, while Aaron Hadley and Jedd Soleway opened the game as Tambellini’s wingers.

That move paid immediate dividends as Tambellini scored just 23 seconds into the game. On a setup by Aaron Hadley, Tambellini ripped a snap shot before Cole Huggins could move.

Philip Zielonka then went to work. At 4:03 he set up John Siemer at the goal mouth to register Coquitlam’s first shot on Austin Smith.

Zielonka scored a power play goal at 7:10 to put the Express ahead, but the Vipers then took over, not allowing a shot on goal for the next 29 minutes while pounding the Express net with 27 shots during that span.

Aaron Hadley notched the first of four Viper power play goals at 11:13 on another good setup by Jedd Soleway.

Zielonka’s first period goal came on Coquitlam’s sixth shot on target. Then the Express scored on their seventh and eighth shots on net.  Mitchell Fyffe had Zielonka’s centering feed deflect past Smith at 16:17 of the middle frame and Brandon Morley notched his first of the season at 18:56.

Zielonka drew his third assist of the afternoon, 30 seconds into the third period when a bouncing puck at the goal mouth apparently touched Alex Kerfoot. So, although outshot 37-9 at the time, the Express found themselves in a 5-5 tie.

Tambellini restored the Viper lead for good at 2:22, collecting a Brett Corkey shot that came off the back boards and stuffing it past Daniel Urbani who had replaced Cole Huggins after the Vipers’ fourth goal.

Tambellini’s scoring outburst moved him to within one point of West Kelowna’s Marcus Basara for the BCHL scoring lead.

Philip Zielonka, who had been recruited by the Vipers but chose to play for Omaha in the USHL before being released and landing with the Express, now has 16 points in 11 BCHL games.  

This game marked the first time in recent memory that two Vipers scored a hat trick in the same game.
