Sawyer Mick’s troubled tenure with the Vernon Vipers is at an end.
Vernon general manager/head coach Mark Ferner granted Mick’s request for a release from the club.
Mick, who turns 19 next month, found himself a healthy scratch after the Vipers brought in forwards Dave Robinson and Sahir Gill at the trade deadline last season. Feeling the Vipers weren’t fulfilling a promise regarding playing time, he opted to leave the team and, ineligible to play elsewhere, sat out the remainder of the season.
The Vernon product has since decided to resume his junior career and, after considering his options, is currently training with the Alberni Valley Bulldogs.
“I was contemplating all summer whether to keep going or not. I realized I have put too much effort into the sport just to throw it away,” said Mick, a forward who amassed 9-13-22 in 45 games with the Vipers.
“I’m looking forward to getting away from the Vernon scene and just focusing on hockey. I like it here, it’s a good group of guys.”
Ferner said he would prefer to have traded Mick’s rights to the Bulldogs to get either a player or future considerations in return, but eventually agreed to simply release him.
“I could have used him as an asset. I would have moved Sawyer wherever he wanted to go. As it turns out, they get a free player,” said Ferner.
A late cut by the Vipers before the 2008-09 season, Mick started that year with the junior B Chase Chiefs before joining WHL Portland Winterhawks. Playing with his older brother Troy’s former club, Mick collected 7-6-13 in 48 games before returning to his hometown team in 2009-10.
