Vipers Alumni Dodginghorse Finalist For Willie O'Ree Award:

Former Vernon Vipers forward Brent Dodinghorse is one of the three Canadian finalists for the Willie O'Ree Community Hero Award.

Dodginghorse was elected as councillor with the Tsuut’ina Nation in 2008. He is the current Portfolio holder for companies, working along side Tsuut’ina Contracting, Sarcee Developments, Sarcee Gravel and the Emergency Response Team to name a few.

Dodginghorse started the 1997-98 season with the USHL Omaha Lancers before joining the Western Hockey League Calgary Hitmen in 1997. Dodginghorse played two seasons with the Calgary Hitmen before signing his first professional contract in 1999 with the ECHL Johnstown Chiefs. Dodginghorse played two seasons in the ECHL from 1999-2001 with the Johnstown Chiefs & Pensacola Ice Pilots before retiring from professional hockey in 2001.

Dodginghorse played two seasons in Vernon from 1995-1997. The Vernon Vipers traded Dodginghorse in the summer of 1997. (I don't remember the actual trade) In 111 games with the Vipers, Dodginghorse collected (53-goals-82-assists-135-points).

Los Angeles Kings Set To Name Former Vernon Viking Holland New GM:

According to a report from Sportsnet-Elliotte Friedman, the Los

Angeles Kings are set to name former Vernon Vikings goaltender Ken Holland new General Manager.

Holland is currently with the National Hockey League’s Hockey Operations Department as an Consultant. Holland spent the previous five seasons as President & General Manager of the Edmonton Oilers. Holland and the Oilers mutually agreed that his contract will not be extended after last season.

Holland started as an NHL Scout with the Detroit Red Wings in 1985. Holland was a Scout with the Red Wings from 1985-1987 before being named to Director of Amateur Scouting in 1987 until being named Assistant General Manager in 1994 then being named General Manager & Executive Vice President of Hockey Operations in 1997. Holland left the Red Wings in 2019 was named General Manager & President of Hockey Operations of the Edmonton Oilers May 7th 2019.

Holland was drafted 188th overall by the Toronto Maple Leafs in Round 12 of the 1975 NHL Draft. Holland never played a game with the Maple Leafs, played four games with the Hartford Whalers and Detroit Red Wings before retiring from professional hockey in 1985.

Holland played one season in Vernon with the 1973-74 Vernon Vikings. In 16 games with the Vikings, Holland posted a 3.69 GAA (No other stats were available)

The Vernon Vikings were around from 1973-1978 before changing their name to the Vernon Canadians in 1978.

The Calgary Canucks broke the Vernon Lakers/Centennial Cup record for scoring the most goals combined in a single game with 17 in a 11-6 victory over the Valleyfield Braves May 10th 2025. The Centennial Cup record for most goals combined in a single game was 16 held by three teams (Vernon Lakers, Notre Dame Hounds & Halifax Oland Exports). The Vernon Lakers & Nipawin Hawks combined for 16 goals in a 11-5 Lakers win at the 1990 Centennial Cup in Vernon, BC.

The Calgary Canucks tied the Vernon Lakers record at the Centennial Cup scoring 11 goals in a 11-6 victory over the Valleyfield Braves May 10th 2025. The Vernon Lakers scored 11 goals in a 11-5 victory over the Niawin Hawks at the 1990 Centennial Cup in Vernon, BC. Six other teams also have scored 11 goals in a single Centennial Cup game. The Centennial Cup record for most goals scored in a single game at the Centennial Cup is 12 set by the Portage Terriers at the 2023 Centennial Cup. The Terriers defeated the Kam River Fighting Walleye 12-2.

Hockey League Finals, former Vernon Vipers forward Carter Streek and the Grande Prairie Storm have advanced to the 2025 Centennial Cup hosted by the Calgary Canucks.

Streek is in his first season with the Grande Prairie Storm. The Storm signed Streek January 10th 2025. In 21 regular season games, Streek collected (8-goals-17-assists-25-points). In 12 playoff games, Streek collected (5-goals-5-assists-10-points).

Streek started the 2024-25 season with the Vernon Vipers. The Vipers signed Streek June 28th 2024. Streek was later removed from the teams roster September 28th 2024 before before signing with the Cowichan Capitals shortly after. 

Streek was an "AP" with the 2019-20 Vernon Vipers. Streek went pointless in 1 game with the Vipers. Streek played parts of the past four seasons in the Western Hockey League with Saskatoon & Spokane from 2020-2024 before signing with the Vernon Vipers June 28th 2024. Streek went pointless in 2 games with the Vernon Vipers before being removed from the Vernon Vipers roster September 28th 2024.

Vipers Alumni Involved With North Okanagan Reapers:

Both websites were created and currently run by long time Vernon Vipers fan/season ticket holder Paul Beugeling.

Vernon's lacrosse team formerly known as the Vernon Tigers is now known as the North Okanagan Iron Ghost Construction Reapers. The Reapers are a merged team between the Vernon Tigers and Armstrong Shamrocks, with it's home games played at the Sunbelt Sports Centre in Armstrong.

Former Vernon Lakers/Vernon Vipers stick boy and former Vernon Vipers trainer Trevor McEachnie is the owner of Iron Ghost Construction which is the Reapers main sponsor. McEachnie is also one of the Reapers Directors.

McEachnie was a stick boy with the Vernon Lakers & Vernon Vipers in the 1990's before becoming the teams trainer from 1996-2006.

Former Vernon Lakers/Vernon Vipers forward Garth Gartner is also a Director with the Reapers.

Gartner committed to Bemidji State University for the 1998-99 season. Gartner played one season at University before signing his first professional contract with the ECHL Pensacola Ice Pilots in 1999. Gartner spent the 1999-2000 season between the ECHL Pensacola Ice Pilots and the CHL Huntsville Channel Cats. Gartner played two seasons in the ECHL & CHL from 1999-2001 with four teams before retiring from professional hockey after the 2000-2001 season.

Gartner is currently construction manager for Everton Ridge Homes in Vernon, BC.

Gartner played four seasons in Vernon from 1994-1998 with the Vernon Lakers and Vernon Vipers. The Vernon Lakers changed their name to the Vernon Vipers in the summer of 1995. In 233 games with the Lakers & Vipers, Gartner collected (78-Goals-89-Assists-167-Points). Gartner is tied with former Vernon Vipers forward/captain Jagger Williamson for most games played in franchise history with 233 games. Williamson played five seasons with the Vernon Vipers from 2014-2019.
