The Vipers scored a powerplay goal from Jack Judson, an even strength marker from Brett Stapley and Ty Taylor turned away 35 saves for his 2nd shutout of the season as the Vernon Vipers defeated the Powell River Kings 2-0 at Kal Tire Place.

The first period was simply two good teams going head to head. There were plenty of hances at both ends as both goaltenders looked locked in. Ty Taylor and Mitch Adamyk thwarted the oppositions offense at every turn. The Viper powerplay went 0 for 1, but their PK stopped two Powell River chances, a narrative that would continue through the rest of the hockey game. The shots finished 12-11 in favour of the Snakes.

The Vipers penalty kill was a big reason the Vipers had success in the second period. That spurred the Snakes on as their powerplay connected for the second straight game as Jack Judson put home his 5th goal of the season after a nice pass from Tanner Wishnowski. Ty Taylor and the penalty kill were tested in sequence as the Kings had a handful of chances on the powerplay. Most notably, Carter Turnbull who had an empty net, but misfired. That kill was important as Brett Stapley was sprung on a breakaway out of the penalty box and as he was hauled down, the puck crossed the line as Stapley slid into the goalie. The officials would discuss the play, but in the end it was called a goal and the Vipers took a 2-0 lead into the dressing room after 2 periods.

In the third, the Kings, as expected came out motivated to equalize the game. The Vipers were able to minimize the grade A chances, despite their PK being tested. The Vipers controlled the puck when possible and squeezed up in the neutral zone to minimize the potent transition game of Powell River. The Vipers had a few chances of their own, but the goaltending at both ends was outstanding. Despite a late flurry from the Kings, the Vipers blocked some big shots and got some big saves from Ty Taylor who finished the night with 35 saves for his 6th win of the year. The final score was 2-0 as the Vipers took both games this weekend.

The Vipers will wrap up their 3 game homestand next Saturday against the Surrey Eagles.

Mike Vandekamp figured the Nanaimo Clippers were pretty much tourists on their first extended road trip of the B.C. Hockey League season.

The youthful Clippers were dispatched 4-1 by the Vernon Vipers as they opened a three-game trek through the Interior and Shuswap before 2,052 fans Friday night at Kal Tire Place. Nanaimo face the Salmon Arm Silverbacks Saturday night and battle the West Kelowna Warriors Sunday afternoon.

“This was our first experience of this stuff, a road trip, staying in a hotel, and it’s just all new for our team and we looked like that,” said Vandekamp, who won a BCHL title with Vernon in 2003. “We weren’t overly prepared at the beginning. We awfully looked nervous and I’m really not sure why. Then we got skating pretty good in the second period and I thought we were a pretty good team for a period, but that third goal was a crushing blow.”

Rookie Connor Marritt, with his first BCHL snipe, defenceman Chris Jandric (second), d-man Chris Kelly (first) and Jordan Sandhu, with his second, supplied the Vernon offence.

Vincent Millette replied with his fourth of the year for the Clippers, who were starting their first road trip of the season.

The Vipers (8-3-0-2) are alone atop the Interior Division penthouse, one point ahead of the Trail Smoke Eaters and two ahead of West Kelowna. The Clippers are 5-50-1 and third in the Island Division, three points behind the Victoria Grizzlies.

“We didn’t win enough battles,” added Vandekamp, who coached the Vipers from 2000-2005. “ They did a good job in the faceoff circle. They had the puck more than we did and they sort of controlled the game. We’re disappointed in that, but we’re just learning lessons right now as a team. This is what this whole early part of the season has been. That’s the conversation we just had in the dressing room was what lessons do we take from today. There was a long list as the guys spoke and that’s good. We’ve got a good group here. The kids are working hard and we still have a lot to learn and that was evident tonight.”

Marritt deftly deflected Michael Young’s point shot past Nanaimo goalie Austin Roden at 3:08 of the opening period. Jandric upped the lead with a mid-air point shot with 2:44 left in the stanza. Captain Jagger Williamson and d-man Jack Judson drew assists. Jandric was named second star.

“It was so great, it was such a great feeling to get that first one off your back,” said Marritt, who was born in Vernon and played minor hockey here until age 11 when he moved to Kelowna. “It was a tip off a shot by the defenceman Mike Young and I just happened to be in the right place at the right time.”

The roadrunner winger rang up 12 goals and 31 points with the Okanagan Academy in Penticton last year. He’s loving the Junior A level and feels more comfortable by the minute.

“It’s unbelievable. I love the team, I love the league, it’s a great league. The boys on this team are just amazing; they’re a pleasure to be around. Every practice, I get more and more confident, especially with our veterans leading the way. They make us feel right at home. Our leadership and our team atmosphere make us a winning group. Everyone’s included and it is truly is team.”

The highly physical Clippers kept going hard to the net in the middle frame and Taylor showed frustration when he wrapped his glove around David Silye after taking a slight bump in the crease. Taylor was assessed a roughing minor.

Kelly put the Vipers up a deuce 3:15 into the third with a seeing-eye wrister from the right sidewall. Brett Stapley and Jimmy Lambert garnered helpers.

Roden registered back-to-stop sweet saves off Coleton Bilodeau and Marritt with nine minutes left in the tilt.

Sandhu, who faced the Clippers a lot last year while with the Alberni Valley Bull Dogs, shot from a sharp angle from the left side and the puck just trickled through Roden’s pads. Sandhu was chosen Vernon’s Fortis Energy Player of the Game.

Nanaimo outshot Vernon 28-27. The Vipers improved to 7-3-0-2 atop the Interior Division, while the Clippers dipped to 5-5-0-1 for third in the Island Division.

Vernon hosts the Island-leading Powell River Kings Saturday (6:00).

I have had season tickets for the past 28 years and been following Junior hockey in Vernon for close to thirty five years. I've missed only three home games since 1998-99 season. For anyone who could not attend or watch tonight’s Vipers game here are my thoughts and views from tonight’s game. You may agree or disagree but we all have our own view and opinion on any game we watch. This is my opinion and my thoughts on how I saw tonight’s game. I try to be unbiased and give a fare recap on both sides. Thanks for stopping by & visiting my blog.

I was at tonight's Vipers-Kings game as Vernon defeated Powell River 2-0 in front of 1,714 fans at Kal Tire Place.

Starting Goaltenders:

Vernon: Ty Taylor
Powell River: Mitch Adamyk

1st Period: The Kings had early control of the puck-play off the opening faceoff but no real threat offensively before the Vipers would get control of the play-puck and get some real good sustained pressure in on the Kings defence inside the opening minutes. The Snakes moving the puck around well, didn't get any real great chances but had Powell River back on their heels for a good two minutes at least. Shortly after Carter Turnbull on a three on two attack, ripped a low shot from inside the circle was denied by Ty Taylor who was out to challenge, made a big stop on the Kings first shot of the evening. Vernon trying for the breakaway early, was going for the long stretch pass, missed two Vipers who were trying to get in behind the Powell River defence. Just before the seven minute mark Kings leading scorer Jonny Evans took a high stick to the mouth that went undetected, as the play carried up ice Evans was really giving a mouthful to the official who missed the call. Evans would be given an unsportsmanlike minor and a ten minute misconduct, giving Vernon the games first powerplay. The Vipers with a few good looks early struggled the remainder of the PP as Powell River killed off the minor. Evans was holding a cloth over his mouth the entire time while sitting in the sin bin, asked to leave the box for repairs. Evans went straight to the Kings dressing room with the team trainer. Evans was spotted near the Kings bench, down the tunnel before returning to the bench late in the period. I didn't see Evans on the ice but a #14 was now on the Kings bench with no name bar, wich I'm guessing was Evans. Just two minutes after killing off the penalty, Powell River would get their first look with the man advantage. The Kings moved the puck around, had several good looks as the Vipers killed off the minor. Just as the penalty expired, Adam Panacci with a good look-opportunity at the top of the crease couldn't solve Mitch Adamyk. Shortly after Powell River would get their second look with the powerplay, but again couldn't capitalize with the man advantage. The Snakes with another strong penalty kill. Inside the final three minutes Jimmy Lambert on an odd man rush, fired high and over the Kings goal. It was 0-0 after 20 minutes of play. This was a fairly evenly matched period with both teams going back and fourth. I thought the Kings had better puck possession and carried a little more of the play in the first half, but the Vipers responded and had their fare share of pressure and edge in play. I thought Vernon had a few more looks-scoring opportunities. Vernon outshot Powell River 12-11.

2nd Period: Just 1:26 into the middle frame Powell River would get an early powerplay after Keyvan Mokhtari was given a minor and ten minute misconduct for shooting the puck down the ice after the whistle was blown. Vernon with a strong penalty kill was able to excape and kill off the minor. Shortly after a harmless looking play-shot towards Vipers starting goaltender Ty Taylor, who gently kicked aside the puck after a shot from along the side wall, had to be sharp as Nick Abbott was at the side of the goal, couldn't get the puck up and over Taylor's pad on a huge save, keeping this game scoreless. Just before the eight minute mark the Snakes would jump on the powerplay and capitalize. Jagger Williamson spotted a pinching Jack Judson who jumped in from the point hit the open cage giving Vernon a 1-0 lead at 8:00 Williamson & Tanner Wishnowski collected the assists. No chance for Kings starting goaltender Mitch Adamyk. The Kings would jump on the powerplay just over four minutes later. Ty Taylor made a huge pad save, couldn't control the rebound, Carter Turnbull pounced on the loose puck somehow missed the open cage, firing right into the pads of Taylor. The Kings come close but couldn't tie the game. Just as the penalty expired Powell River went back to the PP. The Kings struggling getting pucks to the net, as the Viper defence/PK was solid, keeping Powell River to the outside, limiting the Kings opportunities as Vernon would kill off another minor. Just as the penalty expired the Snakes sprung Brett Stapley out of the penalty box in for the parcial breakaway, before Nathan Kelly horse collared Stapley as the two went hard into Mitch Admyk and the Kings net, with a delayed penalty on the play, the puck ended up going in and under Adamyk into the back of the goal. The referee behind the Powell River goal was pointing goal towards the net, while the Vipers now realizing they have scored, Mitch Adamyk lost his cool, chased down the official, going after the referee. The officials gathered near the penalty box, talking about the play-goal and stayed with the call on the ice. Adamyk took the puck out of the net and fired it into the crowd as the fans reacted, booing the Kings netminder. I thought I heard a whistle first before the puck went into the net, when the referee was pointing at the goal, I thought he was making the motion for a penalty shot. At the end of the day, the goal stood. Stapley would be credited with the unassisted goal at 17:08 On the following play while the referee was talking with Mitch Adamyk Tanner Wishnowski was involved with two Powell River players lined up for the draw. Wishnowski and the Vipers upset, calling for a penalty on the play, ended up seeing Wishnowski given a ten minute misconduct. Mark Ferner and the Viper bench upset with the non call and then the ten minute misconduct call. Kal Tire Place erupted, booing the officials. It was 2-0 Vernon after 40 minutes of play. The Snakes played a lot of the 2nd period shorthanded, losing Keyvan Mokhtari & Tanner Wishnowski for ten minutes. Due to all the penalties, Powell River obviously carried a lot of the play, but it was the Vernon penalty kill lead by Ty Taylor who were solid. The Viper defence was very strong on the PK, held the Kings to the outside, really limiting their chances. Powell River with a few looks-opportunities but mostly kept to the outside, with no real good looks-lanes to shoot at. Powell River had the better of the scoring chances, but how big was Brett Stapley's goal late to end the period. Shots were 11-11.

3rd Period: Both teams went back and fourth with no real quality chances before the Kings would get an early powerplay just over four minutes in. Mitch Adamyk come out behind his goal to play the puck, rubbed Jordan Sandhu out along the end wall before a Kings defender stepped in after Sandhu tried pushing off the Powell River goaltender, before the whistle was blown and Sandhu was given the two minutes for goaltender interference. Once again the Vipers bench and everyone inside Kal Tire Place were upset as Adamyk should have been given a penalty for interference on Sandhu. The Viper bench and all the fans let the officials know what they thought of that call. On the play Tanner Wishnowski obviously didn't like the call, was banging his stick on the glass from inside the penalty box. Wishnowski was serving the remainder of his ten minute misconduct before being tossed from the game. Wishnowski was given another ten minute misconduct and game misconduct as fans were now upset and again yelling at the officials. Vernon able to kill off the minor before Brett Stapley broke up the middle, ripped a high shot that was stopped by Mitch Adamyk on a Viper odd man rush. The Snakes would get a powerplay just before the midway mark. Moving the puck around, the Vipers setup Jimmy Lambert for the one timer who beat Mitch Adamyk rang his shot off the crossbar as Vernon was within inches of grabbing a 3-0 lead. The Snakes with several good looks, couldn't capitalize. In the second half both teams with the man advantage couldn't find the back of the net. Powell River would call a late timeout. With just under two minutes remaining and Powell River in control of the puck-play, the Kings decided to keep Mitch Adamyk in goal. With 1:28 remaining the Kings would get a late powerplay and now get Mitch Adamyk to the bench for the extra attacker. Powell River with a ton of pressure couldn't get pucks through after Jagger Williamson, Sol Seibel and Jordan Sandhu blocked shots. Captain Jagger Williamson took a good look at the open cage, wired the puck down the length of the ice, hit the bottom of the post, missing the open net inside the final minute. The Kings would keep the pressure on, couldn't solve Ty Taylor who made a few big stops late before time ran out as Vernon hung on for the 2-0 victory. Another period with several penalties. I thought both teams carried the play at times but it was the Snakes who had a slight edge in play. The Viper penalty kill was very good again, coming up large in the final two periods. I thought Vernon had the better opportunities as both teams battled hard in the final twenty minutes. The Kings struggled getting pucks to the net-through traffic on the powerplay. When Powell River did get pucks to the net-through traffic, the Kings didn't have any puck luck in and around the net. The Vipers got lucky on several occasions. Shots were 13-13.

Top Player's: (Vernon)

Sol Seibel I thought played a strong game on the Viper defence. Blocked shots, did a good job at clearing the front of the net, was very strong clearing the zone. Played very well.

Brett Stapley (1 goal) Scored a big goal late in the 2nd period on a goal, I thought the play was blown dead before the puck crossed the line. Stapley played with a lot of jump/energy was very shifty tonight, fighting his way through traffic. Created/generated chances.

Josh Prokop I thought was another forward that looked-played strong. Didn't see as much ice come the 3rd period but was very good in the first two periods.

Tanner Wishnowski (1 assist) Played a hard-strong game Friday come back with another strong/hard fought game tonight. Wishnowski becoming a fan favorite in Vernon was limited to his ice time after picking up two ten minute misconducts-one game misconduct. I thought really battled hard, won battles-races for the puck, played with an edge, played physical, was laying the body, really opens up the ice. A real character-veteran player.

Jagger Williamson (1 assist) The captain played-battled hard, blocked a shot late in the game on the penalty kill, stayed with the play and stayed on the ice, until the puck cleared the zone. Was strong on the puck-on the forecheck-down low. Competed all game.

Jack Judson (1 goal) Looked very impressive in the win. The rookie blueliner played very well. Jumped up into the play, was good at both ends of the rink.

Jimmy Lambert Had several quality opportunities, couldn't find the back of the net. Showed a lot of hustle, played strong-hard all night. Really battled hard, fought his way through traffic, really opens up the ice when with the puck.

Adam Panacci I thought played his best game as a Viper. Hasn't played much this season, with the new 23 man roster but has looked good when given the opportunity. I thought looked very impressive in the opening frame, had some good looks-chances.

Ty Taylor (35 saves-shutout) Playing in back to back games for the first time this year, picks up his second shutout of the season. Taylor who played well in the win over Nanaimo last night, was very solid between the pipes Saturday. Looked confident, made some key saves at key parts of the game. Was good on the penalty kill. Very good positionally, didn't give up many rebounds-second opportunities. The Vipers have rotated goaltenders from day 1, will we see Taylor start next weekend vs Surrey? Have the Vipers found their #1 goaltender?

Game Thought's: (Vernon)

You knew tonight was going to be the Snakes toughest challenge-game of the weekend. After a 2-1 loss to Powell River in Chilliwack at the BCHL Showcase, the Vipers get some revenge and pick up their second straight win over a very good Powell River team. I thought the Vipers played well in the win over Nanaimo Friday, come ready to battle-play tonight and earned the victory-two points. After a scoreless 1st Vernon with two big goals in the middle frame, head to the 3rd with a two goal lead. I thought both teams were fairly even through out the opening period but other then being shorthanded I thought the Vipers had a slight edge in play over the Kings in the 2nd and 3rd periods. Overall I thought Vernon had the better of the scoring chances, had the puck go their way tonight, while also got lucky-had some puck luck on their side on a few times during the game. I thought the powerplay, looked a little better and very impressed with the penalty kill this season but especially over the weekend. The Viper PK was very good last night and come up large again tonight. The Snakes still need to stay out of the box, giving up nine powerplays in a game is crazy. Vernon played with a ton of jump-energy, had a lively bench, played hard, battled-competed come away with a character win. The veterans really showed their leadership in the 3rd late blocking shots, doing whatever it takes to win. Guys were talking on the bench, patting one another as they come off the ice. I was a little concerned before tonight as this was Vernon's third game in four nights, but the Snakes showed little to no fatigue and played very well in a pretty intense game. The Vipers played as a team. The Kings with just one loss prior to tonight, shows the rest of the league that the Vipers are for real this year and have put together a strong team. Tonight was the home debut of assistant coach Jerred Smithson who was behind the Viper bench for the first time this season. A much smaller crowd tonight after last night's crowd over 2000. Back to back home games are a hard sell, to try and get fans out for both nights. Whoever plays the music at the games, thank you for finally changing up the very old and tiresome play list you have been playing at Viper home games for at least the last two seasons. Most of the music played at Viper games the last few years, has been terrible. Not the kind of music you hear at most hockey games. Whats up with Finn Evans? Hes been a scratch for at least the last four/five games. Is he injured? He was a big off season acquisition. With the win the Vipers improve to 9-3-0-2 sit atop the Interior Division and tops in the league with twenty points.

Top Player's: (Powell River)

Carter Turnbul Isnt the biggest kid but has some wheels, can move in a hurry. Creates/generates opportunities, reads/sees the ice well. Was buzzing all over the ice tonight, sees a lot of ice time, was strong for the Kings.

Jonny Evans The Kings leading scorer took a stick to the mouth early in the 1st went to the dressing room to get looked at by the trainer before returning late in the opening period, with jersey #14 and no name bar. I'm guessing it was Evans as #13 never returned and this #14 was taking a lot of draws, was on the top line. Was very dangerous with the puck, very shifty, has some wheels and good on the faceoff. Was one of Powell River's better players.

Kevin Obssuth The Kings leading goal scorer was held off the score sheet tonight, was another forward who stood out. I thought played hard-strong through out the loss.

Andy Stevens Was very solid on the backend. Has a quick shot from the point, plays a lot on the powerplay, gets pucks to the net. Was good at both ends of the rink tonight.

Mitch Adamyk (34 saves) Played well between the pipes. Gave his team a chance to win, made several big stops in the loss. A bigger kid, that covers a lot of the net, likes to come out and play the puck, really likes making that long stretch pass up ice. Caught the Vipers a few times between line changes.

Game Thought's: (Powell River)

The Kings played very well tonight, had their fare share of chances couldn't muster any puck luck in and around the net. Powell River come into tonight with just one loss on the season, was shutout for the first time this season. The Kings are quick, can move the puck and strong on the forecheck. Powell River went 0-9 with the man advantage looked good on the powerplay early-1st period but had troubles getting pucks to the net in the 2nd and 3rd with the man advantage. Give the Vipers penalty kill some credit, who closed the shooting lanes, kept the Kings powerplay to the outside, limited their opportunities. If the Kings PP was clicking tonight, this could have easily been a different outcome. Overall both teams were fairly even other then specialy teams. Both teams carried the play at different times, had more puck possession then the other but it was Powell River who couldn't bury their chances, need some puck luck-a few bounces to go their way. The Kings four game winning streak is snapped. Nice to see a few Kings fans in attendance. The Kings have struggled in Vernon. Since the 2003-04 regular season, Powell River has just three wins in Vernon. With the loss the Kings fall to 8-2-1-0 and sit atop the Island Division.

Duncan Wray Collects Win #900

Congratulations to Vernon Vipers owner Duncan Wray on picking up career win #900 as owner of the Vernon Lakers-Vipers hockey club with a 4-1 victory over the visiting Nanaimo Clippers Friday.

Wray took over new ownership of the Vernon Lakers in 1992-93 after purchasing the Vernon Lakers off former owner Mel Lis.  Wray changed the Vernon Lakers name to the Vernon Vipers to start the 1995-96 regular season. 

Since 1992 Duncan Wray has won six League Championships (1996,1999,2003,2009,2010 & 2011) as well as four National Championships-Royal Bank Cups (1996,1999,2009 & 2010). 

Wray has guided the Vernon Lakers-Vipers franchise to a regular season record of 900-464-54 missing the playoffs three times (2001, 2012 & 2013).  Wrays most wins in a regular season as owner of the Lakers-Vipers franchise is 52 regular season wins wich came during 1998-99 season as the 1999 Vipers recorded a franchise record 52-8-2 regular season record winning the 1999 RBC Cup. Wrays Lakers-Vipers won 30 or more regular season games in one season 18 times and won 40 or more regular season games in a season 7 times.

The 8-3-0-2 Vernon Vipers are coming off a 4-1 victory over the visiting Nanaimo Clippers last night. The win snapped the Vipers three game winless streak. Tonight is the second of three meetings with the Kings. Powell River leads the season series 1-0 after a 2-1 victory September 22nd in Chilliwack at the BCHL Showcase. These two teams will meet for a final time February 16th. Tonight is the Snakes third game in four nights, are facing an Island-Mainland team for a third straight game. Vernon comes into tonight have two wins in their last five games. The Vipers sit 1st in the Interior Division are two points up on West Kelowna and a single point up on Trail. Jesse Lansdell is serving his third game of a four game suspension.

I have had season tickets for the past 28 years and been following Junior hockey in Vernon for close to thirty five years. I've missed only three home games since 1998-99 season. For anyone who could not attend or watch tonight’s Vipers game here are my thoughts and views from tonight’s game. You may agree or disagree but we all have our own view and opinion on any game we watch. This is my opinion and my thoughts on how I saw tonight’s game. I try to be unbiased and give a fare recap on both sides. Thanks for stopping by & visiting my blog.

I was at tonight's Vipers-Clippers game as Vernon defeated Nanaimo 4-1 in front of 2,032 fans at Kal Tire Place.

Starting Goaltenders:

Vernon: Ty Taylor
Nanaimo: Austin Roden

1st Period: Just 1:20 into the opening frame Jimmy Lambert on an odd man rush, ripped a quick high shot from the circle that beat Austin Roden went off the crossbar, as the Vipers come within inches of opening the scoring. The Snakes with a ton of pressure early, were the moving the puck around before Michael Young's point shot was redirected in front by Connor Marritt giving Vernon an early 1-0 lead on their first shot of the night at 3:08 Marritt with his first career BCHL goal. Young drew the lone assist. The Vipers carried a lot of the play early and often, but weren't getting pucks to the net. Very few shots at either ends of the rink early. About six minutes in Vernon product Coleton Bilodeau driving hard to the front of the net, couldn't solve Austin Roden in front, making his first big save of the evening. About a minute later Lucas Vanroboys would get the Clippers first good look-opportunity, would go hard to the net, be stopped by Ty Taylor who made a tough save from in close before Vanroboys crashed the goal, running over the Viper netminder. A scrum took place in the blue paint as Taylor went after Vanroboys. Both teams would come out of the scrum with a minor. On the following play, former Alberni Valley Bulldogs captain Jordan Sandhu lead the rush on a two on one, setup alternate captain Jimmy Lambert who fired high and over the goal after Austin Roden come across the blue paint, looked big, covered a lot of the net, forcing Lambert to shoot high. A good look-quality chance for the Snakes. The Vipers would get the games first powerplay late and capitalize. Struggling early with the man advantage, Vernon couldn't seem to muster much with the extra attacker before Chris Jandric's point shot beat Austin Roden giving Vernon a 2-0 lead at 17:16 Jagger Williamson & Jack Judson collected the helpers. On the following play Nanaimo would get their first look with the powerplay. Ty Taylor had to be alert and strong between the pipes, as the Shipmen with two goal mouth scrambles couldn't find the back of the net. The Vipers would get into penalty trouble and take another minor late, giving Nanaimo a fairly lengthy two man advantage. The Vipers with a strong penalty kill, got some big blocks on the backend, killed off the first minor before the period come to an end. The Clippers with still time remaining on the PP heading into the 2nd. It was 2-0 Vernon after 20 minutes of play. The Snakes got off to a strong start, Jimmy Lambert hit the crossbar less then two minutes in as Vernon carried the better of the play, for most of the period was the better of the two teams. The Vipers with a ton of puck possession, had some good looks-chances put two past Austin Roden didn't generate a lot for grade a chances, but had some good looks-missed opportunities in close. The Clippers didn't see a lot of time in the offensive zone, played a lot of hockey in their own end, chasing the puck-Vipers. The Shipmen with not a lot of grade a chances, were down two heading into the second. Vernon outshot Nanaimo 7-6.

2nd Period: The Clippers started the middle frame on the powerplay, that was carried over from the opening frame. The Vipers held Nanaimo to the outside and able to kill off the remainder of the penalty. Just as the minor expired Jimmy Lambert wearing Les Reaney's old #23 with two good looks-opportunities in front of the Clipper crease couldn't beat Nanaimo starting goaltender Austin Roden who come with with two big stops early. On the following play the Clippers would jump on an early powerplay. Vernon with a strong PK killed off the minor. Just over a minute later the Snakes would get a look with the man advantage. But shorthanded Lucas Vanroboys and Jamie Collins with some slick moves, weaved their ways in and out of the Viper defenders before Collins cut hard to the front of the crease, couldn't get the puck past Vipers starting goaltender Ty Taylor who made a big stop shorthanded, keeping this a two goal game. The Shipmen with a strong PK killed off the penalty. Shortly after Niko Karamanis took a high heavy hit along the side wall, wanted a penalty but the play continued. Karamanis with no helmet went straight to the Viper dressing room with the trainer, before returning minutes later. A few plays later the Clippers would get on the board. A goal mouth scramble had Ty Taylor down and out wich looked like a Nanaimo player on top of the Viper goaltender, before Vincent Millette buried the loose puck at the top of the crease into the open cage, cutting the Vernon lead to 2-1 at 8:27 Brad Belliisle with the lone assist. Taylor and the Vipers were furious with the goal, as Taylor took off his mask was really giving it to the officials. The officials gathered in front of the penalty box, talked things over rewarded Nanaimo with the goal. This was a huge goal for the Clippers who were back in the game and changed the momentum from here on in. Just minutes later Tanner Wishnowski with a big hit just inside the neutral zone was called for charging, as fans erupted getting after the officials for missing the big high hit on Karamanis just minutes prior. The Shipmen would jump on the powerplay. Ty Taylor had to be sharp was forced into making several tough saves in close, as the Clippers were crashing the crease on almost every play, as Taylor and the Snakes were frustrated. Several after the whistle activities took place for most of the remainder of the period. The Clippers had the Viper defenders back on their heels at one point, before Shawn Guison somehow missed a wide open cage, Nanaimo going to the net hard, had some looks in close but couldn't capitalize. A minute after the powerplay expired the Clippers crashed the crease forcing Ty Taylor to take matters into his own hands, grabbed a hold of a Nanaimo player, putting the kid in a headlock. Taylor would take a penalty, giving the Shipmen back to back powerplay's. The Clippers having trouble with the PP as Vernon would kill off the minor. Troubles with the score clock as the clock didn't start when the play started, causing fans yelling at the score keepers. The Snakes with a late powerplay couldn't convert before getting a second powerplay in the dying seconds. It was 2-1 Vernon after 40 minutes of play. The Vipers killed off back to back powerplays to start the period, then had a few good looks-chances early, slowly started to carry the play again before the ice tilted and so did the momentum. It seemed like after Vincent Millette's goal at 8:27 the tides turned. This goal seemed to give Nanaimo life and get them back into the game. The Clippers had some of their better looks-opportunities on the powerplay, looked to get under the skin of Vernon. The Shipmen driving hard to the net, were getting under the skin of Ty Taylor and the rest of the Vipers. Tempers were heating up this period, with lots of after the whistle activities from both sides. Ty Taylor had to be alert and good between the pipes, made some big stops in the period. The Vipers looked good in the opening few minutes before the Shipmen took over the edge in play and carried the better of the play for most of the period. A pretty feisty period with several scrums as tempers heated up. Nanaimo outshot Vernon 14-11.

3rd Period: The Snakes started the final frame on the man advantage that was carried over from the end of the 2nd period. Vernon had a few shots towards the net, but no real quality chances as the Clippers killed off the minor. A minute later second year defenceman Shane Kelly's shot from just above the circle somehow found its way to the back of the goal, giving Vernon a 3-1 lead at 3:15 Brett Stapley and Jimmy Lambert drew the helpers. This was a weird play. I never seen the puck-shot until the goal light come on. Austin Roden even looked confused to how that puck beat him. Kelly with a big goal, gives the Snakes a two goal lead early into the 3rd. Both teams went back and fourth but it was the Vipers who seemed to have just a little more jump in their game, were winning most of the battles-races for the puck. Both teams were limited to chances before Brad Belliisle with a nice individual effort at the Viper blueline was able to get around his defender before going in alone, put a nice move around Ty Taylor before just missing the far corner. Minutes later former Victoria Grizzlies forward Keyvan Mokhtari with a great individual effort went in and around two-three Nanaimo defenders before being stopped in close at the side of the goal. Mokhtari didn't look to get a good shot off, but still had a quality opportunity in close. A few players later Connor Marritt would get stoned at the side of the goal after Austin Roden come across the blue paint to make a huge pad save. Minutes past the halfway mark Jordan Sandhu with a solid individual effort squeezed one in and off Austin Roden wich looked to handcuff the Clippers goaltender, giving Vernon a 4-1 lead at 14:27 Jimmy Lambert & Brett Stapley with the assists. On the following play Lucas Vanroboys hauled down Tanner Wishnowski in front of the benches, Vanroboys was tossed from the game after picking up a ten minute misconduct. The Shipmen would get a late powerplay before Nanaimo would take a penalty washing out the man advantage. A big scrum in front of Ty Taylor and the Vernon net with just over a minute remaining as both teams got involved with more pushing and shoving. The Vipers would get a late powerplay inside the final minute and again for a second time tonight, the score keepers having troubles with the score clock. The clock didn't start once the play started for a good twenty five seconds if not longer, as fans yelling at the officials-score keepers. The play kept going with the clock not running. On the next stoppage the referee ended the game, even though the score clock was still showing fourty eight seconds left in the game. Vernon would come away with the 4-1 victory. Both teams went back and fourth at times early but it was the Snakes who looked like the quicker-team with more energy, were winning a lot of the battles-races. The Vipers strong on the puck-forecheck, played hard along the wall-in front of the net. The Clippers with very little opportunities, had troubles getting any kind of offence going in the 3rd. Vernon with a few solid plays-quality chances, played more of a shut down role. Shane Kelly's goal just over three minutes into the period was a killer for Nanaimo. Vernon outshot Nanaimo 9-8.

Top Player's: (Vernon)

The line of Brett Stapley (2 assists), Jimmy Lambert (2 assists) & Jordan Sandhu (1 goal) Was very strong for the Vipers. The line created/generated lots of offensive chances for Vernon. This line was really skating-flying, opened up a lot of ice. Lambert was really flying off the opening puck drop. Rang a shot off the crossbar just 1:20 into the 1st period, had a ton of jump, was winning battles-races, was strong on the puck-forecheck, created/generated some good looks-chances. I really liked Sandhu's game. Was another Viper forward that was strong on the forecheck-puck, played hard, battled/competed, played with a ton of jump-energy.

Tanner Wishnowski The veteran western hockey leaguer was getting under the skin of several Clippers tonight. Wishnowski had several Nanaimo players chirping him all night, he was target #1 for the Clippers. Played hard, played smart, was strong down low and in and around the net. Really adds that veteran experience-grit to the Vipers roster this year.

Connor Marritt (1 goal) Opened the scoring with his first career BCHL goal, I thought played very well. Had some looks-opportunities, was going to the net, played hard.

Chris Jandric (1 goal) Was solid on the blueline. Jumped into the play, was good at both ends of the rink.

Ty Taylor (27 saves) Has yet to lose this season improves to 5-0-2. Taylor didn't see much rubber in the opening frame, had to be sharp-alert in the 2nd period with Nanaimo pressing. Taylor who has played very well this season, had a strong game between the pipes. Made some big stops on the PK and five on five. Looked to get a little rattled with all the traffic crashing the crease in the 2nd period but settled down as the game went on and held his own.

Game Thought's: (Vernon)

After a tough-disappointing 3-2 loss in Wenatchee Wednesday, the Snakes come back with a pretty impressive 4-1 victory on home ice tonight. This was the Vipers second game in three nights, have won six straight over Nanaimo & win the season series 2-0. The Vipers with a strong start, played with a ton of jump/energy, were really flying/skating hard all night. Vernon with a quick transition, had a lot of time with the puck, carried a lot of the play, had the Shipmen chasing them at times. Other then the 2nd period I thought the Vipers were the better of the two teams, won a lot of battles-races, were strong on the puck-forecheck, didn't back down from the after the whistle activities and held their own against Nanaimo. After going winless in their previous three games this was a good character win. I thought the Vipers penalty kill was strong, give credit to Ty Taylor. I also thought Vernon limited the Clippers opportunities most of the night. Overall this was an entertaining game with lots going on in between plays-after whistles. The Vipers need to now prepare for a very strong Powell River Kings team that will be in town tomorrow. The Kings come into Vernon with a 8-1-1-0 record after a 5-1 win in Chilliwack this evening. A fairly big crowd on hand for just the third home game of the season. Former Viper defenceman Brad Farynuk (2000-2002) was in attendance tonight. With the win the Vipers move to 8-3-0-2 sit 1st in the Interior Division are a point up on 2nd place Trail.

Top Player's: (Nanaimo)

Lucas Vanroboys I thought was Nanaimo's best player. Played hard, was skating hard, going to the net, created/generated some looks-opportunities, was in the face of the Vipers all night.

Vincent Millette (1 goal) I thought played well through out the loss. Has some wheels, can move the puck in a hurry, goes to the net, looks for opportunities. Was one of the more offensive minded forwards.

Game Thought's: (Nanaimo)

The Clippers couldn't seem to get much going offensively in the 1st had troubles with Vernon's speed and skill. Nanaimo saw a lot of action inside their own blueline, were caught chasing the Vipers for a lot of the game. The Clippers have been off since a 3-2 loss to Victoria Saturday, should be the more rested of the two teams. Vernon played in Wenatchee Wednesday. Both teams didn't get a lot of rubber towards the net but it was the Vipers who saw more time with the puck, were at least creating-generating plays. The Shipmen seemed to change momentum shortly after getting on the board. The Clippers driving hard to the net, were getting under the skin of Viper netminder Ty Taylor and the rest of the Vipers, were now more involved in scrums after every whistle. I thought Nanaimo had their better opportunities in the middle frame, were really limited to quality chances through out the night. The Clippers went 0-6 with the man advantage, could have used a powerplay goal or two. The Shipmen lost a lot of battles-races, were beat to the puck often and along the boards. I thought Austin Roden gave up a lot of big rebounds-second opportunities tonight, while not many stand outs from the Clipper roster, really made an impact on the ice. The Clippers have just one win in their last eleven visits to Vernon. Nanaimo's last regular season win in Vernon was a 4-3 double overtime victory on January 16th 2009. With the loss Nanaimo falls to 5-5-0-1 sit 3rd in the Island Division are a point up on Alberni Valley.

Let's take a look at the Nanaimo Clippers:

The 5-4-0-1 Nanaimo Clippers make their first and only regular season visit to Kal Tire Place are coming off a 3-2 loss Saturday to the visiting Victoria Grizzlies. The Clippers have just one win in their last ten visits to Vernon. Nanaimo's last regular season win in Vernon was a 4-3 double overtime victory on Friday, January 16th 2009. This is the second and final regular season meeting with the Vipers. Since a 4-3 loss September 30th at home to Vernon the Shipmen have gone 1-1-0-0. Tonight's the first of a three game road trip for the Clippers who are 2-1 away from home. The Shipmen have just one win in their last five games. Nanaimo sits 3rd in the Island Division are three points up on 4th place Alberni Valley, are three points back of 2nd place Victoria and four points back of Division leading Powell River.

One point in their last three games has pushed the Vernon Vipers to an honourable mention in the Canadian Junior A Hockey League top-20.

The Vipers, who were rated No. 12 in the 132-team circuit last week, lost 3-2 to the Wenatchee Wild before 2,234 B.C. Hockey League fans Wednesday night at the Town Toyota Centre.

Wenatchee gave up two early shorthanded goals before rallying for their sixth victory in 10 starts. The Snakes dipped to 7-3-0-2.

“We weren’t very good,” said Vernon head coach Mark Ferner. “I thought our start was good so you can’t blame the bus trip. We didn’t win many battles and we didn’t get pucks deep. They refused to get pucks past their dee. We turn it over and now we have to get back and play defence. It’s disappointing. We got exactly what we deserved and they heard about it.”

Captain Jagger Williamson blocked a shot and pushed in on a partial breakaway. He released a low hard shot that eluded Seth Eisele blocker side for his fourth goal of the season. D-man Michael Ufberg had 17 seconds left in a roughing minor.

Keyvan Mokhtari picked the pocket of Jasper Weatherby and deked Eisele to record his fourth of the year to make it 2-0 six minutes later. D-man Shane Kelly had 38 seconds remaining in an elbowing penalty.

The Wild funneled pucks at former Wenatchee goalie Anthony Yamnitsky all night and that strategy paid off at 12:16 of the opening 20 when Daniel Chladek deflected a Sam Morton shot for his second snipe of the year.

The Wild started the second period on the powerplay (Jack Judson off for high sticking) and it took just 41 seconds before Chad Sasaki’s wrister from the right circle found its way through a maze of bodies for the equalizer.

The Snakes earned few chances at the Wild goal with Mokhtari ripping one off the crossbar. Yamnitsky was on point stopping multiple great chances in the middle stanza.

Sam Hesler banged home a rebound in front of the net for the winner after a face-off win 2:17 into the third period. Cooper Zech and Jack Lippis drew helpers.

Despite a couple of powerplays and a definite sense of desperation, the Vipers couldn’t generate the Grade A chances they needed in the final frame.

Wenatchee had allowed just shorthanded goals against in their last 67 games. The Vipers have six shorties on the year. While the Viper broadcast crew counted 14 scoring chances for the Vipers, the official shots on goal were 27-13 Wenatchee.

Vernon hosts the Nanaimo Clippers (5-4-0-1) on $5 Friday tonight (children and teens) before entertaining the Powell River Kings (7-1-1-0) in a 6 p.m. start Saturday.

Wenatchee (6-3-0-1) heads to West Kelowna Friday night to meet the Warriors who share the Interior Division lead with the Vipers.

SNAKE BITES: F Finn Evans and D Mitch Andres were healthy Viper scratches. F Jesse Lansdell served the first of a four-game suspension for a hit on Penticton’s Joe Leahy Saturday night in Vernon Landsell only received a charging minor, but the Vees sent video of the hit to the league…Vernon did not send video of the high hit Luke Reid put on Tanner Wishnowski in the same game…Ty Taylor gets the start in net against Nanaimo…Vernon has gone 1-for-19 on the powerplay their last three tilts…Nolan Welsh and Layton Ahac supplied third-period goals as the Prince George Spruce Kings edged the Merritt Centennials 3-2 before 525 fans at the Rolling Mix Arena in PG…Will Calverley pocketed 1+2 as the Chilliwack Chiefs upended the host Coquitlam Express 4-1 before 325 supporters at the Poirier Sports and Leisure Centre…Vernon’s Cole Woodliffe had one assist as the Weyburn Red Wings dispatched the La Ronge Ice Wolves 3-2 in Saskatchewan Junior play Wednesday night. Woodliffe had 1+1 as Weyburn upset the Melfort Mustangs 3-2 Saturday. Weyburn is 5-2-0-1, Melfort 9-1-1-0.

CALGARY, Alta. (Monday, Oct. 9, 2017) – The Canadian Junior Hockey League (CJHL) Top 20 regular season rankings, for the period ending Oct. 9, sees the surging Okotoks Oilers (AJHL)  moving into the No. 1 slot overall.

MHL: The first-year Edmundston Blizzard remains hot out of the gate starting 7-0 to lead the MHL standings and move into No. 2 in the rankings with the Yarmouth Jr. ‘A’ Mariners earning honourable mention status.

LHJAAAQ: Two LHJAAAQ clubs in les Cobras de Terrebonne and College Français de Longueuil hold their place in the Top 20.

CCHL: Powerful Carleton Place already boasts 12 wins in CCHL play this season and has jumped to No. 9 in the CJHL while the 2018 Fred Page Cup-host Ottawa Jr. ‘A’ Senators moved to No. 12 nationally.

OJHL: Earning places in the rankings from the OJHL are the Toronto Patriots (17) and Georgetown Raiders (18) with the Oakville Blades and Wellington Dukes both picking up honourable mention nods.

NOJHL: The NOJHL winning percentage leaders has the Powassan Voodoos up to 15th and the newly-formed Hearst Lumberjacks getting a HM spot.

SIJHL: The 6-0 Thief River Falls Norskies are now No. 3 in the CJHL and the 2018 Dudley-Hewitt Cup-host Dryden GM Ice Dogs sit 7th.

MJHL: A trio of MJHL squads in the Steinbach Pistons, OCN Blizzard and Virden Oil Capitals are No. 11, 13 and 20 respectively in this edition of the rankings.
SJHL: Earning No. 5 in the listings is the Battlefords North Stars and Melfort Mustangs were tabbed eighth.

AJHL: With nine straight wins in as many games Okotoks is the new No. 1 in the CJHL and the Fort McMurray Oil Barons are 14th overall.

BCHL: The 6-0-1 Penticton Vees slipped to No. 4 in the rankings this week. The Powell River Kings moved to No. 10 and the Trail Smoke Eaters were tabbed at No. 19 with the Vernon Vipers picking up an honourable mention.

Here are the game highlight's from the Town Toyota Center Wednesday in Wenatchee. The Vipers scored back to back shorthanded goals, blew a 2-0 lead after the Wild scored three straight to come away with the 3-2 victory. Seth Eisele made just 11 saves in the win, while Anthony Yamnitsky made 24 saves in the loss. With the win Wenatchee improves to 6-3-0-1 while Vernon falls to 7-3-0-2
