This is starting to look a lot like last season. Very few wins and players coming and going often. Last year fans were told players were coming and going because of the new NCAA rules, yes that was correct but we also heard horror stories of players wanting out and not wanting to play here. With the hiring of Matt Cooke and him brining in his own coaching staff and keeping ownership out of the picture, I wasn't expecting a re-run of last season. With Matt Cooke being hired late in July and the team basically picked before he was hired, I wasn't expecting much as most of the players coming into training camp were picked from the previous management/coaching staff from last season. Matt Cooke has tried brining in his own players and with a poor start to the season and only 3 wins, Cooke has tried to change the make of his roster. The only problem from a fans point of view is the changes that have been made, haven't helped or improved the team. The team this season has been a much improvement from last years team, they play hard, they compete and have been in almost every game other then a couple of games. The problem is, they haven't improved and haven't been winning hockey games. Trades and player movement are a part of hockey and I get that, but you have to look at the players that have been brought in to help improve the team and make the team better and those players or at least a lot of them, haven't done that. A lot of the players brought in through out the season, have come and gone so my question is, who recruited/or scouted these kids and told them to come here? Why were they brought here if they weren't good enough? Not all trades or moves work out and I get that, but it just seems like a lot of the players that were signed or brought in, haven't worked out. Recruiting is a major part of junior hockey, if you don't recruit well, your team isn't going to be very good. Recruiting has been a major problem since ownership took over in 2018. The Vipers haven't been getting the same quality of players or elite players some of the other teams have been getting. I didn't expect Matt Cooke to come in and have a 1st place team but I also didn't expect the Vipers to only have 3 wins three months into the season. The Vipers haven't been good the past five - six years and it's going to take Cooke and his staff a while to change the culture and put together a competitive/winning team.
