McGillis and Zalewski Prominent at Awards Night
Tuesday, March 13, 2012 - Submitted by Don Klepp
The Viper annual awards night that was held at the Prestige Inn on Monday saw Patrick McGillis and Mike Zalewski make the most trips up to the awards table.
Zalewski, a 19-year-old power forward with plenty of finesse, was the Vipers’ top scorer with 38 goals and 37 assists, both of which led the team. A left winger who also took faceoffs, he played in all situations. He displayed a penchant for scoring big goals late in games, including the tying goals that anchored two big comeback wins versus the Prince George Spruce Kings.
Mike will attend and play hockey at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute next year, just an hour or so away from his home in New Hartford, New York.
Patrick McGillis missed half the season because of a severe high ankle sprain but he made frequent trips to the dais, starting with his Captain’s remarks to the 200 + fans, Viper supporters, and players who attended. He won the Blueliners’ scholarship of $900, he was named the team’s most sportsmanlike player, and he was the co-winner of the Rienie Holland community service award along with Max Mowat.
Patrick is weighing his options for next year, but in the meantime he plans to work at a Vernon-area golf course for the summer.
Here are the other award winners:
Fan favourite – Riley Hunt
Unsung hero – Aaron Hadley
Rookie of the year – Adam Tambellini
Bill Brown academic excellence – Ryan Renz
Sun Valley Source for Sports most improved player – Jedd Soleway
Short handed goal award – Darren Nowick
Top defenceman – Brett Corkey
Riley Hunt, Aaron Hadley, Adam Tambellini, Jedd Soleway, Ryan Renz, and Brett Corkey are all expected to play for the 2012-13 Viper squad. Darren Nowick will play and study at Northern Michigan University next year.
