Mavericks Sign Former Vernon Vipers Defenceman Zulyniak:

The CHL Missouri Mavericks have signed former Vernon Vipers defenceman, Andy Zulyniak. Zulyniak played three years in Vernon (2003-2006) before playing four years at Lakehead University.

MAVERICKS ANNOUNCE TWO PLAYER SIGNINGS AND INTRASQUAD GAME

Jared Lavender and Andy Zulyniak sign, intrasquad game set for Oct. 13

INDEPENDENCE, Missouri – Missouri Mavericks’ President and General Manager Brent Thiessen announced Friday the Central Hockey League (CHL) team has signed defensemen Jared Lavender and Andy Zulyniak. Thiessen also announced the Mavericks will host an intrasquad game at Independence Events Center on Thursday, October 13 at 7 p.m.

The intrasquad game is free and open to the public however the Mavericks are asking for donations for Community Services League at the door. The Mavericks are asking fans to bring a donation of cash, canned food or a new toy for Community Service League’s Christmas Store. The game begins at 7 p.m. on Thursday, October 13 at Independence Events Center and doors open at 6:30 p.m. For more information about Community Services League please visit http://www.cslcares.org/.

“We wanted to give our fans an opportunity to see the team before we go on a long road trip and we had an opportunity to partner with Community Services League at the same time,” said Thiessen. “We can raise awareness for CSL and collect food and donations for a great cause while giving our fans a chance to see the new players in action.”

Lavender, 27 (3/30/84), returns for his third season with the Mavericks. The Cleveland Heights, Ohio native set a career high with 10 points (0-10=10) during the 2010-11 season with Missouri. In total, the 5-foot-11, 190-pound defenseman has competed in 94 regular-season games with the Mavericks and has 17 points on two goals and 15 assists. He has also competed in 12 playoff games for Missouri and has two assists. Prior to playing professionally, Lavender played four seasons at Castleton College where he recorded 35 points (8-27=35) in 97 games played.

“Jared Lavender has competed very hard over the last two seasons and has made great improvements in his game since arriving out of Division III hockey,” said Mavericks’ Head Coach Scott Hillman. “He is a good team player and he is once again prepared to fight for a job with the Mavericks.”

Zulyniak, 26 (2/25/85), begins his pro career with the Mavericks. The 6-foot-1, 200-pound defenseman played his last five seasons at Lakehead University alongside fellow Mavericks’ signee Kris Hogg. Zulyniak finished his collegiate career playing in 110 games where he accounted for 52 points (10-42=52) and 52 penalty minutes. The Winnipeg, Manitoba native also played in 12 games with the ECHL’s Victoria Salmon Kings following the 2006-07 season with Lakehead. Prior to playing in college, Zulyniak played four seasons of junior hockey in the British Columbia Hockey League (BCHL) and the Western Hockey League (WHL). He had his finest season as a junior with the BCHL’s Vernon Vipers where he had 59 points (13-46=59) in 58 games during the 2005-06 season. In total, Zulyniak had 138 points (32-106=138) and 178 penalty minutes in 222 games played as a junior.

“Andy is a highly skilled defenseman who plays with great composure,” added Hillman. “He is a player we have been watching for the past few seasons and we are very excited he has joined the Mavericks. We believe he will continue to increase the skill and mobility on our blue line.”

The Missouri Mavericks will begin their third season in the Central Hockey League in October, and the home opener is Saturday, November 5 against the Wichita Thunder. The Mavericks play their home games at the state-of-the-art Independence Events Center where parking is always free.
