The Spruce Grove Saints are the 2010 AJHL Enerflex Cup Champions following a 6-0 victory over the Fort McMurray Oil Barons in Game Seven on Tuesday night. League President Craig T. Cripps presented the Enerflex Cup to the Saints in front of a sold-out crowd at the Grant Fuhr Arena in Spruce Grove.

The 2010 Enerflex Cup is the first Alberta Junior Hockey League Championship for the Spruce Grove Saints. The Spruce Grove Mets were League Champions in 1975 and 1976; the St. Albert Saints captured the AJHL Title in 1981, 1982, 1996 and 1998.

The Saints held a record of 12-4-0 in the 2010 AJHL Enerflex Cup Playoffs. Goaltender Vincenzo Marozzi posted the shutout in Game Seven, and recorded all four wins in the Championship Series. Adam Henderson led the Saints in scoring, and was second overall in the AJHL Scoring Race with 20 playoff points.

The 2010 Source for Sports Playoff MVP Award was presented to Branden Gracel of the Fort McMurray Oil Barons. AJHL Vice-President Ryan Bartoshyk presented Gracel the Playoff MVP Trophy, recognizing his efforts as the key component of Fort McMurray’s lengthy post-season run. Gracel led the AJHL in post-season scoring with 27 points. The 19-year-old from Calgary, Alberta also amassed 94 points in 58 regular season games for the Oil Barons this season, fourth in the Alberta Junior Hockey League Scoring Race.

The Spruce Grove Saints captured the Dave Duchak Trophy for the second consecutive year as the 2009-2010 AJHL Regular Season Champions. The Saints set five League Records as they completed the Regular Season on with a record of 52-4-1-3 and a historic 108 points. The Saints completed the regular season 25 points ahead of their next closest rival in the AJHL North Division.

Steve Hamilton was selected the 2009-2010 AJHL Coach of the Year for the second consecutive season and the third time in his AJHL career. Hamilton is in his fourth season as General Manager and Head Coach of the Spruce Grove Saints. Four members of Hamilton’s Saints were recipients of 2009-2010 AJHL League Awards, including Dillon Simpson (Rookie of the Year), Nate Fleming (Most Dedicated Player), Travis Rolheiser (Top Goaltender), and Travis Rolheiser / Vincenzo Marozzi (Top Team Goaltender).

The Spruce Grove Saints will now battle the Vernon Vipers in the 2010 Doyle Cup (Alberta / British Columbia Championship Title). Vernon defeated Powell River in Game Seven of the BCHL Championship on Monday. The 2010 Doyle Cup Series will begin in Spruce Grove with two consecutive games on Friday and Saturday night.

The 2010 Doyle Cup Champion will qualify for the right to represent the Pacific Region at the 2010 RBC Royal Bank Cup National Junior ‘A’ Championship in Dauphin, MB from May 1st – 9th, 2010.
