Injury ends St. Denis’ season
January 14, 2010
One of the Kelowna Rockets’ most dangerous offensive threats is done for the season.
The Western Hockey League club has decided to sit out forward Kyle St. Denis for the remainder of the 2009-10 campaign.
The 5-foot-7 Trail native, and former Vernon Viper, hasn’t played since Dec. 8 after suffering his second concussion of the season, and the fourth of his career.
“We have to make sure we do what’s best for Kyle and that’s sitting him down for the rest of the season,” said Rockets GM Bruce Hamilton.
“I don’t think any of us understand what he’s gone through with all these concussions. It’s been a difficult time for him and now it’s time to make sure he gets better.”
St. Denis missed 50 games during the 2008-09 regular season, 37 with a broken hand and 13 more due to concussion symptoms. He returned for the playoffs where he played in six games and another four in the Memorial Cup.
This season, St. Denis had 13 goals and 22 points in 26 games. In the last two years combined, he has 44 points in 48 games.
“It really affects our team because he’s a point-a-game guy,” said Hamilton. “Our biggest concern, though, is making sure he’s feeling better before he plays again, and hopefully he can come back healthy next fall.”
Hamilton said St. Denis will remain with the hockey club and will be taking a number of post-secondary courses in Kelowna.
