It's fair to say that few British Columbia Hockey League players have boosted their resumes to the extent that Vernon Vipers assistant captain Kyle Bigos has this season.
On Sunday, the six-foot-five defenceman capped a tremendous year with a highlight reel goal in Vernon's RBC Cup-clinching win over the Humboldt Broncos. One night earlier, he was recognized as the tournament's Most Valuable Player and Best Defensive Player, and he finished the event ranked second in points with nine in six games.
After Sunday's Championship, BCHL Insider Garrett James had a chance to catch up with Bigos.
On the satisfaction of a job well done:
On the satisfaction of a job well done:
"It's just a great feeling. It hasn't really sunk in yet, but right now just overwhelmed with joy and the sense that we did everything we could and we came out with the win."
"We worked (really hard) and we've been trying for this all year. From the beginning of the year, everyone came into camp talking that we wanted to win the RBC this year. We owed it to ourselves, our fans, our owner Duncan Wray and our coaches Mark Ferner and Jason Williamson, and this is something that no one is ever going to take away from us."
On the sofy hands he displayed on Vernon's second goal:
"Had it all along, it was just a well-kept secret."
On Vernon's game-plan entering Sunday's contest:
"We just had to play a simple game; Pucks out at our blueline, pucks in at theirs and just try to outwork them from the dots to the boards. We just kept our heads down, our blinders on and kept working for that goal."
On the week-long experience at the RBC Cup:
"We were treated really well. Hockey Canada and the City of Victoria did a great job. I never realized until I was at a tournament like this how great it is."
On the possibilities of a repeat in 2010:
"Dr. Duncan Wray, Mark Ferner and Jason Williamson and our scouts really put together a great time. That's all you can really ask for and now we have to go and do the job again next year."
On winning a fifth RBC Cup title for the City of Vernon:
"It means a lot. Our fans are the greatest, our owners, our coaches, the whole organization is the best in Canada I think, and (it's good) to reward them for that. It just shows our appreciation."
