Ed Johnstone, who led the Vernon Lakers to Centennial Cup titles in 1990 and ‘91, has been named head coach of the Kootenay International Junior League expansion North Okanagan Knights in Armstrong.
Johnstone, 55, was a sixth-round choice of the New York Rangers in the 1974 entry draft (Medicine Hat Tigers). He collected 258 points in 426 NHL games with the Rangers and Detroit Red Wings.
He represented the Rangers in one all-star game. After coaching the Lakers, Johnstone spent nine years in the minor leagues, including three seasons as assistant with the American League Cincinnati Mighty Ducks.

“I’ve been outof it fora few years, exceptfor my Midget team, and I got the itch, and it’s close to home,” said Johnstone, who works full-time for a local paving firm.
