Vipers book date with Fred Page
By Graeme Corbett - Vernon Morning Star
SALMON ARM – Connor Jones turned the hat-trick as the Vernon Vipers iced the Salmon Arm SilverBacks 3-1 in Game 6 to claim the B.C. Hockey League Interior Conference title Saturday night at the Sunwave Centre.
The Vipers will await the winner of the Victoria Grizzlies-Powell River Kings Coastal Conference final, which will conclude with Game 7 Tuesday night in Victoria.
The winner of that series will host Games 1 and 2 of the best-of-seven Fred Page Cup Championship starting Friday.
Jones put the Snakes on the board at 2:58 of the first. After winning a draw back to the Adam Thompson, Jones deflected the point shot far side past netminder Bryan Gillis.
Jones’ second came in the second frame when he collected a loose puck on Gillis’ doorstep and calmly slid the puck under the Salmon Arm netminder.
The Montrose product sealed the win with an empty-netter from just inside his blueline with less than a minute remaining.
The Vipers were without injured players Mike Collins (head), Cameron Brodie (foot) and Ryan Santana (shoulder). They dressed Enderby product Nick Amies as a seventh defenceman to bolster their ranks.
The SilverBacks were without Bobby Lipsett and Brent Vandenberg, who was suspended for a brutal hit he put on Collins in Game 5.
The Snakes last competed for the Fred Page Cup in 2006-07, falling to the Nanaimo Clippers in six games. They last won it was in 2003.
Meanwhile, the Grizzlies grounded the host Kings 5-2 Friday night at the Recreation Complex to force Game 7.
