Stingrays Release Former Viper Elser:

The East Coast Hockey League's (ECHL) South Carolina Stingrays have released former Vernon Vipers forward Brian Elser.  The Stingrays signed Elser on February, 6th 2013 before releasing him on February, 27th 2013.  No official press release from the Stingrays but it's posted on the Transactions page on the ECHL website.  In seven games with South Carolina Elser collected (1-1-2).  Elser is now eligible for waivers/waiver claims by any ECHL team or can return to the Southern Professional League's (SPHL) Fayetteville FireAntz.

Elser started the season with the Southern Professional League's (SPHL) Fayetteville FireAntz playing in 22 games collecting (9-8-17) before being called up to the East Coast Hockey League's (ECHL) Gwinnett Gladiators. The Gladiators signed Elser on January, 15th 2013 to a one game contract before returning Elser to the SPHL Fayetteville FireAntz after playing just one game. 

The Vipers scouted Elser who was 18 at the time, at the U.S. Midget championships in Buffalo. Elser attended the 2008-2009 Vipers training camp making the Vipers opening day roster before being traded on September, 12th 2008 to the AJHL Drayton Valley Thunder for future considerations (cash) and a player to be named next year. In two games with the Vipers Elser collected one assist. Rumor was Elser didnt report to the Thunder and his rights were given back to Vernon. On August, 7th 2009 the Vipers traded Elser and future considerations to Victoria for Jonathan Milhouse.

Former Vipers Captain Crowell Named To Western Collegiate Hockey Association Scholar-Athlete Team:

Former Vernon Vipers captain Chris Crowell was named named to the 2012-13 Western Collegiate Hockey Association Scholar-Athlete Team.  Crowell in his fourth season with the UAA Seawolves has played in 36 games this season collecting (0-3-3).  Crowell played four seasons in Vernon (2005-2009) was captain with the Vipers in his final two seasons of Junior hockey.  In 213 regular season games with the Vipers Crowell collected (33-57-90) guiding the Vipers to the 2009 RBC Cup Championship.

Six 'Wolves named WCHA Scholar-Athletes

WCHA Release - Feb. 13 MADISON, Wis. –  Six members of the Alaska Anchorage Seawolves’ hockey team were among a record 114 men and women named to the 2012-13 Western Collegiate Hockey Association Scholar-Athlete Team, announced by the league on Wednesday.

Led by three-time honoree senior Chris Crowell, the Seawolves’ six recipients is a program high, tying last season's six.  Picking up their second career award were senior Scott Warner and junior Matt Bailey, while senior Daniel Naslund, junior Quinn Sproule and sophomore Kory Roy each received the accolade for the first time.

Crowell becomes just the third Seawolf to receive the distinction for the third time, joining goaltenders Jon Olthuis and Dusan Sidor and he is among 21 other WCHA student-athletes that were honored for the third time this year.

In 2005-06, the inaugural season of the WCHA Scholar-Athlete award, there were 47 men’s and women’s honorees. In 2006-07, there were 49 honorees, in 2007-08 there were 79, in 2008-09 there were 71, in 2009-10 there were 80, in 2010-11 there were 90 and last year (2011-12) there were 110.

The six Seawolves will be honored publically this Friday at the Nebraska Omaha game at the Sullivan Arena.

Former Vernon Viper Fitzgerald Named Player Of The Week:

Former Vernon Vipers forward Trevor Fitzgerald was named the BCHL player of the week today.  Fitzgerald in his second season with the Nanaimo Clippers played parts of two seasons with the Vipers (2009-2011) before being traded to Prince George in the summer of 2011.  The Spruce Kings then traded Fitzgerald to Nanaimo before the start of the 2011-12 season.

Nanaimo Clippers forward Trevor Fitzgerald has been named the Gongshow BCHL Player of the Week for the week ending March 17, the league announced Monday.

Fitzgerald helped his team get out to a 2-0 series lead in their Coastal Conference quarterfinal matchup against the Alberni Valley Bulldogs. In Game 2, the Nanaimo captain not only opened the scoring but also notched the overtime winner in a 3-2 victory.

The Vernon, B.C. native was in on each Clippers goal on the night as he also had an assist on Nichoals Gushue's second-period power play tally.

Former Vipers Goaltender Hammond Ends College Career:

Former Vernon Vipers goaltender Andrew Hammond ends his college career after the Bowling Green Falcons lost 4-3 to Notre Dame Saturday ending the Falcons season.  Hammond finished his fourth and final season at Bowling Green University.  Hammond attended the Chicago Blackhawks development camp In July went (10-15-3) with three shutouts and a 2.47 GAA this year. Hammond played parts of two years in Vernon (2007-2009) after coming over in a trade with the Surrey Eagles during the 2007-08 season. In 52 regular season games with the Vipers Hammond posted a (33-15-1) record recording 6 shutouts.

Falcons' Season Comes To An End With 4-3 Loss To Notre Dame

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- The Bowling Green State University ice hockey team lost to Notre Dame Saturday night, falling to the Fighting Irish by a score of 4-3. The loss gave Notre Dame the series victory, ending the 2012-13 season for the Falcons. Freshman Ben Murphy scored one goal for Bowling Green, while junior Bryce Williamson netted two goals in the loss. Senior Andrew Hammond stopped 30-of-34 shots in his final game as a Falcon.

Notre Dame scored the first goal of the contest, coming at 6:44 of the opening frame on the power play. After circling the puck through the Falcon zone, Irish forward Bryan Rust took possession of the puck at the near side of the Bowling Green net. Rust sent a pass into the slot, deflecting the puck off a Falcon stick towards the net. The deflection surprised Hammond, beating him five hole for a 1-0 Notre Dame lead.

The Fighting Irish scored their second-straight goal roughly six minutes later, coming off the stick of Nick Larson at even strength. Larson received a pass from deep in the Notre Dame zone at the Falcon blue line, giving him a partial breakaway on the Bowling Green cage. Hammond made the initial stop, but Larson followed his shot and jammed home the rebound for his fourth goal of the season.

The Falcons answered back with a power play goal of their own, coming at the 6:33 mark of the second to cut the ND lead to one. Freshman Ralfs Freibergs took possession of the puck on the near circle, eventually sending a pass to Williamson at the top of the far faceoff dot. Williamson fired a wrist shot on net, beating Notre Dame net-minder Steven Summerhays for his 11th goal of the season.

Bowling Green continued the rally with just 1:18 left in the middle stanza, scoring another power play goal to even the contest at 2-2. Freibergs once again started the play, sending a shot towards a mass of bodies in front of the Notre Dame crease. Freibergs’ shot hit Murphy’s stick in the slot, deflecting past Summerhays for Murphy’s sixth goal of the season.

At 8:28 of the third frame, Notre Dame applied heavy pressure in the Bowling Green zone, resulting in a near scoring chance at the side of the net. During the scrum on the side of the cage a Falcon defender closed his hand on the puck in the crease, giving Notre Dame a penalty shot. Rust was chosen to take the shot, moving in and sending a backhander over the blocker of Hammond to regain the lead for the Irish. Notre Dame netted a fourth goal at the 12:05 mark of the period on the power play, coming off the stick on Anders Lee on a deflection for a 4-2 Irish lead.

Just 13 seconds later junior Brett Mohler took possession of the puck deep in the Notre Dame zone, taking advantage of an Irish turnover.  Mohler fed a pass to Williamson in the high slot, giving him plenty of time to fire home his second goal of the contest, cutting the Notre Dame lead to 4-3. Despite several more quality chances, the Falcons were unable to score again, giving Notre Dame the 4-3 win and the series sweep.

Saturday’s loss marked the end of the season, and the final game for Falcon seniors Marc Rodriguez, Andrew Hammond, Bobby Shea and Ryan Peltoma. Hammond’s career ranks among the best in a number of goaltending categories in Bowling Green history, including a 2.84 goals against average that ranks second all-time, trailing only Brian Stankiewicz’s 2.49 GAA set in just 34 career games. Hammond’s goals against average is the most of any BG goaltender to play in over 100 career games. He also currently sits at 3,030 saves in his career, joining Gary Kruzich (3,580), Tyler Master (3,286) and Jordan Sigalet (3,147) in the 3K-Save Club.

The loss drops Bowling Green’s final overall record to 15-21-5, with a record of 10-15-3-1 in the conference play. Saturday’s contest was the final game for Bowling Green as a member of the Central Collegiate Hockey Associate, a conference Bowling Green has called home for over 40 years. Next season will mark the Falcons’ first season as member of Western Collegiate Hockey Association , joining the University of Alaska Anchorage, the University of Alaska Fairbanks, Bemidji State University, Ferris State University, Lake Superior State University, Michigan Technological University, Minnesota State University, Mankato, Alabama-Huntsville and Northern Michigan University.

Former Vipers Defenceman Bigos Ends College Career With Loss To Boston University:

Former Vernon Vipers defenceman Kyle Bigos ended his college career Saturday after Merrimack College was swept in two games by Boston University.  Bigos finished his fourth and final season with the Merrimack Warriors. In thirty regular season games this year Bigos collected (4-7-11). Bigos played two seasons in Vernon (2007-2009) collecting (10-40-50) in 116 regular season games with the Vipers. Bigos an assistant captain in his second and final season with the Vipers was drafted 99th overall by the NHL Edmonton Oilers in the 4th round of the 2009 NHL Draft.

BOSTON UNIVERSITY ADVANCES TO HOCKEY EAST SEMIFINALS WITH 5-3 WIN OVER MERRIMACK

BOSTON - IIn head coach Jack Parker's final home game, the No. 18 Boston University men's ice hockey team posted a 5-3 victory over Merrimack on Saturday evening to sweep its Hockey East quarterfinal series and advance to TD Garden for a semifinal showdown with archrival Boston College.

The third-seeded Terriers (20-15-2) erased three one-goal deficits before taking a 4-3 lead on a goal at the crease by senior Ben Rosen with 14:49 left in regulation.

Sophomore Cason Hohmann and junior Sahir Gill each had one goal and one assist while junior Matt Nieto notched the 100th point of his career by potting his team-leading 17th goal of the season. Freshman Sam Kurker notched a key power-play goal and fellow rookie Sean Maguire made 39 saves to earn his fourth consecutive victory.

The game marked the final time Parker coached in front of a home crowd in his 40-year coaching career, as the Terrier bench boss announced on Monday that he will retire at the end of the season.

BU, which earned a 3-0 shutout win in Friday's series opener, advances to the league semifinals for the 11th time in the last 12 seasons.

Sixth-seeded Merrimack (15-17-6) got a 29-save performance from junior Sam Marotta and goals from freshman John Gustafsson and juniors Mike Collins and Shawn Bates.

BU went 2-of-5 on the power play and had its streak of successful penalty kills come to an end at 21 thanks to a 2-for-3 performance by the visitors on the man advantage. Bates scored the lone goal of the first on a power-play tally with just a minute remaining in the period. BU erased that 1-0 deficit just seconds after a power play expired early in the first when freshman Danny O'Regan spotted Nieto in the slot, where the junior buried a shot to become just the third Terrier since 2000 to reach the century mark before the end of his junior season.

Skating on another man advantage, the Warriors took the lead again three minutes later on a wrister by Collins from the right circle.

The teams went back and forth towards the late stages of the second, beginning with another equalizer from the Terriers. Hohmann followed up his own shot from the left circle on the power play to make it a 2-2 affair at the 16:12 mark.

Once again, the visitors regained the lead, as Gustaffson corralled an errant BU pass and found the corner of the net to make it 3-2 in their favor with 1:60 left in the second.

Kurker would send the teams into the second intermission deadlocked, however, as he punched in a puck at the top of the crease for BU's second power-play goal of the night with just 7.6 seconds left in the middle stanza. Senior captain Wade Megan and Hohmann assisted on the play.

In the sixth minute of the third, Rosen won a faceoff and got the puck to freshman Matt Lane before skating to the net. Lane backhanded a puck towards Marotta and Rosen got his stick on it before roofing it to give the Terriers the lead for good.

With Marotta pulled, Gill teamed up with Megan to seal the victory with an empty netter with 4.4 seconds left in regulation.

In all, 11 Terriers recorded at least one point on the night. Senior Sean Escobedo and freshman Ahti Oksanen recorded five blocked shots each.

The Terriers will face fifth-ranked Boston College in Friday's second Hockey East semifinal at TD Garden. The game, which will be broadcast by NESN and NBC Sports Network, is scheduled to start at 8 p.m.

Wild Trade Former Vipers Defenceman Genoway To Washington:

The NHL Minnesota Wil have traded former Vernon Vipers defenceman Chay Genoway to the NHL Washington Capitals Thursday.  Genoway is in his second season with the AHL Houston Aeros. In 53 games this season Genoway has (4-15-19) last year in 72 regular season games Genoway collected (7-29-36). The Minnesota Wild signed Genoway to an entry-level contract back on April, 12th 2011. Genoway made his NHL debut last season with the Minnesota Wild on April, 7th 2012 collecting 1 assist and being named 2nd star vs the Pheonix Coyotes. Genoway played one season in Vernon (2005-2006). In 56 regular season games with the Vipers Genoway collected (17-32-49).

Capitals Acquire Chay Genoway from Minnesota

ARLINGTON, Va. – The Washington Capitals have acquired defenseman Chay Genoway (pronounced GEHN-oh-way) from Minnesota in exchange for a conditional seventh-round draft pick in 2014, vice president and general manager George McPhee announced today.

Genoway, 26, has recorded 19 points (four goals, 15 assists) and a plus-11 rating in 53 games with Houston of the American Hockey League (AHL). He ranked second amongst Houston defensemen in points and goals and ranked second on the team in plus/minus. The native of Morden, Manitoba, has collected 55 points (11 goals, 44 assists) in 125 career AHL games with Houston. Genoway has appeared in one career NHL game with Minnesota, registering an assist on April 7, 2012, against Phoenix.

The 5’9”, 177-pound blueliner was originally signed by Minnesota as an undrafted free agent on April 12, 2011. Genoway posted 127 points (26 goals, 101 assists) in 168 career games with the University of North Dakota, helping the team advance to the 2011 Frozen Four. He served as North Dakota’s captain his junior and senior seasons and was named a First Team All-WCHA in 2011 and 2009. Genoway Earned AHCA All-America Second Team honors and was named WCHA Defensive Player of the Year in 2009 after being named North Dakota’s Rookie of the Year in 2007.

Genoway will report to Hershey.

Former Vernon Viper Volpatti Bumped To Capitals Top Line:

Former Vernon Vipers forward Aaron Volpatti joins Nicklas Backstrom and Alex Ovechkin on the Capitals top line when Washington faces off against the Boston Bruins today.  The Vancouver Canucks signed Volpatti as a free agent on March 22, 2010.  Volpatti played parts of the last two and a half seasons with the Vancouver Canucks before being claimed off waivers by the Washington Capitals back in February.  Volpatti played three seasons in Vernon (2003-2006) In 137 regular season games with the Vipers Volpatti collected (13-24-37).

Aaron Volpatti to take turn as top-line left wing

After taking a few shifts alongside Alex Ovechkin and Nicklas Backstrom in Thursday’s win over Carolina, Aaron Volpatti is set to start Saturday’s contest on the top line with the Captials’ franchise pillars.

“For me I don’t think it can really change too much,” Volpatti said. “Obviously I’ve got to be good defensively with those two guys — if I’m the high guy, I’ve got to make sure I stay the high guy. I’m just going to try and be physical and create some room for them.”

The gritty forward is the latest contestant on the ever-changing reality show of who wants to be the Capitals’ top line left wing. Marcus Johansson, Matt Hendricks, Jason Chimera and Wojtek Wolski have all seen time on the wing opposite Alex Ovechkin this year.

Coach Adam Oates has said multiple times that, ideally, top-line left wing is where Brooks Laich will fit into the lineup whenever he’s able to return from a nagging groin injury. But in the meantime Oates continues to rotate through his various options.

Volpatti skated 11:58 in Thursday’s game, his most ice time as a Capital and the second highest total he’s had this season. He was defensively responsible, made a physical impact with four hits and added a smooth centering pass for the primary assist on Joey Crabb’s goal.

Expect him to serve a similar role to the one Hendricks had when stationed on the top line – driving the cycle and crashing the net. Volpatti automatically adds toughness as well and he might be able to help keep the Bruins’ pests in check against Washington’s top forwards.

“I have no problems doing that if it gets a little bit out of hand sending a message or keeping the other team accountable,” Volpatti said. “It’s not an issue.”

Former Vernon Vipers forward Sahir Gill is one of eighteen players that have been named this week's Hockey East weekly top performers Monday.

Sahir Gill being named Hockey East weekly top performer for the fourth time this season. Gill tallied two goals in the Terriers' 5-0 win vs. Northeastern on Saturday and added an assist in Fridays' 4-2 at NU. Gill played parts of two seasons in Vernon (2008-2010) In 71 regular season games with the Vipers Gill recorded (21-30-42).

At Hockey Now deadline, there was just one week left of regular season play and just one playoff spot up for grabs. The season’s final days will determine who plays who in the post-season, which begins Friday, March 15, and which teams be at homes for Games 1 and 2. Questions remained at deadline time as to the Goaltending Award (lowest GAA/1,000 minutes played) but safe to say Mario Puskarich, with a 16-point edge, will win the Brett Hull Trophy as top scorer.

ISLAND DIVISION

Alberni Valley Bulldogs – A loss to Nanaimo March 3 ensured the Clippers will have home-ice advantage in the playoff series between these two teams. Before going scoreless March 2 and 3, Evan Tironese scored 21 points in 10 February games and will have to be big if the ’Dogs want to bark in the playoffs.

Cowichan Valley Capitals – The first team eliminated from playoff contention this season had some good results to finish February with consecutive wins over first-place Victoria but it’s good for little more than experience. Defenceman Jarrett Brown is finishing strong in an outstanding rookie campaign.

Nanaimo Clippers – A three-win weekend, including back-to-back overtime wins against Victoria and a 6-3 defeat of Alberni Valley, sends the message the Clips are primed for playoff time. They eagerly anticipate the returns of Michael McNicholas and Aaron Hadley. This could be a team on the rise at the right time.

Powell River Kings – Cowichan Valley’s struggles essentially handed them a playoff berth but this hasn’t been a season to remember for the Kings. With one game left, they had lost five in a row and will face Victoria, who have also been slumping, in Round 1. Evan Richardson has six points in three games.

Victoria Grizzlies – This slumber can’t continue; they’ve lost four straight heading into the final weekend. Good news is that Myles Fitzgerald is back but he’ll need support – Gerry Fitzgerald hasn’t played since Jan. 20 but remains third in team scoring. The Grizz get good production from defenceman D.J. Jones, Nolan De Jong and Blake Thompson.

MAINLAND DIVISION

Chilliwack Chiefs – Another top team that has been slumping lately, the Chiefs will play Prince George in the first round. They still boast the No. 1 penalty kill and No. 2 powerplay in the BCHL. Josh Hansen’s return to health is good in an already-deep forward group. The blueline is still big and nasty.

Coquitlam Express – Despite being sellers at the trade deadline, the Express made things interesting down the stretch and weren’t officially eliminated until March 3. Malcolm McKinney seems intent on finishing his Junior A career with a bang – he has nine points in his last four games, including a four-goal game.

Langley Rivermen – A two-goal, four-assist game March 3 not only put an exclamation point on the scoring title for Mario Puskarich, it came in a postseason berth-clinching 8-4 win over PG. The Rivermen will face rival Surrey in the first round and will be able to play loose as the underdogs.

Prince George Spruce Kings – They’ll visit Chilliwack to open the post-season but will feel good as they won 5-3 at Prospera Centre on Feb. 23. PG relies on a by-committee offensive approach but are led by Cam Lawson and Coltyn Hansen. Not sure what defensive defenceman Kevin Guiltinan is up to lately but he has three points in four games.

Surrey Eagles – Having long since locked-up first place in the Mainland, the Eagles not also have a good shot at top spot in the BCHL as the hottest of the three division-leading teams. They’ll be more concerned with facing Langley in the first round and neutralizing Mario Puskarich, who has not been contained by many teams this year.

INTERIOR DIVISION

Merritt Centennials – Pretty recently, the Cents were reeling in Penticton for first but now they have to be careful West Kelowna doesn’t catch them for second place. Either way, they’ll face the Warriors in Round One and a 6-2 loss to them March 2 is a stark reminder of what’s ahead.

Penticton Vees – Back-to-back overtime losses to Trail should help sharpen this club’s focus heading into the playoffs. Trail has been gunning for the final playoff spot and the Vees can vanquish those hopes if they can defeat them in their final meeting March 10.

Salmon Arm SilverBacks – A road-only schedule to finish the season is a severe test but Salmon Arm went two points up on Trail with a gutsy comeback win March 3 in Coquitlam. The high-pressure atmosphere the Gorillas have been playing in could make them tough in the playoffs.

Trail Smoke Eaters – Whatever the outcome, the Smokies have not finished the season quietly. Wins on Feb. 23 and March 1 in overtime against Penticton showed this team has jam but it may not be enough with Salmon Arm having a game in hand. A much-improved season over last year, any way you cut it.

Vernon Vipers – It’s all about next year in Vernon and has been for a while but there are some good players returning to build around like Mason Blacklock and Dexter Dancs. Special teams should be a focus for next season as the Snakes’ power play and penalty kill were 15th and 16th respectively.

West Kelowna Warriors – Quietly, the Tribe is the highest scoring team in the BCHL and has snuck up on the Merritt Centennials for a chance at home-ice advantage in the first round. Goalie Tyler Briggs has not been overworked and should be primed for a playoff run while Marcus Basara has been one of the top players in the league all season.

The Vernon Vipers wanted to go out in style and they did exactly that Saturday night at Wesbild Centre.

Brendan Persley netted the double-overtime winner to give the Snakes a 3-2 win over the Merritt Centennials in their final B.C. Hockey League regular season game. It was their fourth straight win.

Persley seemed to have forever and a day as he coolly roofed a rebound over sprawled netminder Tyler Steel in front of 1,800 fans. The rugged power forward joked that he went over some positive energy exercises on the bench before his shift.

“We didn’t have anything to lose; we just went out and worked hard,” he said.

Persley added the Vipers’ strong finish to the season will bode well for next year as they build up to host the RBC Cup national championship.

“Summer is going to be good for everyone to go home, see their families and come back. We’re going to be a force.”

Added Vernon captain Brett Corkey: “We won all four games against some pretty good teams. We proved we had the team it took to make it. It was just a little too late.

“I’m excited for the group next year. Great group of kids. I think they’ve got something special here.”

Mitch McAllister, with his fourth goal in three games, and Andrew Tegeler scored for Vernon in regulation.

McAllister (7th goal) opened the scoring during a five-minute powerplay when his centring pass deflected past Steel off a Merritt defenceman’s leg.

Merritt’s Payton Schaefer earned the major and an early shower for kneeing Vipers’ forward Michael Roberts in open ice. Roberts left the game and did not return.

Tegeler (6th), electing to shoot on a 2-on-1, forced overtime less than a minute after Jeff Wight (13th) had given the Centennials the go-ahead goal 12:38 into the third period.

Merritt d-man John Saunders (2nd) wristed a point shot through traffic for the Cents’ other goal midway through the second period.

Saunders, a former North Okanagan Junior B Knight, played a handful of games as a call-up with Vernon last season. He joined the Cents full-time midway through this campaign.

He said the loss was a blow for the 31-17-3-5 Centennials, who lost home-ice advantage for Round 1 of the Fred Page Cup playoffs with the West Kelowna Warriors (30-13-4-9).

“Westside took over home ice tonight but we wanted to battle hard. We’ve been in a slump lately, the last three or four games, and we couldn’t pull it out tonight.”

Added Merritt head coach Luke Pierce: “These last couple weeks have been tough, just waiting and anticipating getting started in playoffs.

“We’ve played a lot of games against opponents where things don’t really matter and those are tough teams to play.”

Rylan Ferster’s Warriors brushed back the Cowichan Valley Capitals 4-3 in OT Saturday night to relegate Merritt to third in the Interior. The Vipers finished last at 21-25-1-9, six points out of a playoff spot.

Danny Todosychuk made 30 saves for his eighth win of the season. Steel had 27 stops.

Saturday night was the final BCHL game for a trio of graduating Vipers – Corkey, Marc Hetnik and Tegeler.

“I’m proud to be a Viper,” said Corkey, the team's MVP who will join the NCAA Division 1 Colgate Raiders next season. “It’s just all the good times coming to the rink, being with the guys and battling every day on the ice.

“And the fans we have here are unbelievable. All the support we get, we really appreciate it. I’ve got a lot of great memories.”

The Vipers can possibly return 18 players for next season, and since the trade deadline, head coach Jason Williamson has liked what he has seen.

“We heavily relied on a couple guys and once we moved those guys everyone just stepped up and realized this is our hockey club,” he said. “They held each other accountable, we worked hard and kept it simple.

“It’s a sour taste in our mouths, but they’re going to learn how they have to be right from the drop of the puck next season.”

The No. 4 ‘Backs will face the No. 1 Penticton Vees to open the post-season...Vernon’s Curtis Lazar had a goal, his 36th, as the Edmonton Oil Kings iced the host Moose Jaw Warriors 4-1 in WHL play Saturday at Mosaic Place. Former Viper Luke Pierce Wins Coach Of The Year:

Former Vernon Vipers forward Luke Pierce was named the BCHL Interior Conference Coach of the year today.  Pierce is in his fourth season as Head Coach-GM of the Merritt Centennials.  Pierce and his hometown Cents begin the first round of the BCHL playoffs Friday with Game 1 in West Kelowna.  Pierce played his final year of Junior hockey in Vernon (2003-04) after being aquired from the Merritt Centennials for future considerations on June, 10th 2003.  In 53 regular season games with the Vipers Pierce collected (7-21-28).

Brett Corkey was named top defenceman and Viper most valuable player at the 2013 awards night held at the Prestige Inn on Monday.

Corkey, who will attend Colgate University next year, has spent three years with the Vipers. One of his memorable moments with the Vipers came at the RBC Cup in 2011 when he was named to the tournament all star team. He led the round robin portion of the tournament in scoring and played sterling defence.

As the Viper captain and go-to defencemen this year, he was the team's focal point. His ability was recognized by the BCHL's coaches, who included him in the league's second-unit all star squad.

Vernon Vipers forward Mitch McAllister has been named the Gongshow BCHL Player of the Week for the week ending March 10, the league announced Monday.

McAllister broke out in a big way, scoring almost half his season point total in the final three games. The Medicine Hat, Alta. native opened up with the game-winning goal and an assist in a win over Merritt where he took 1st Star and followed with two goals and a helper in a victory over Penticton where he again took 1st Star.

In the season finale, he scored a goal and was named the FortisBC Energy Player of the game in an overtime win against Merritt. McAllister's four goals and two assists gave him totals of seven goals and six assists for the campaign.

Former Vipers Defenceman Noonan Likely Done For Season:

Former Vernon Vipers defenceman Garrett Noonan suffered a separated shoulder in a win over Northeastern this past weekend and may miss the rest of the season.  Noonan is in his third season at Boston University.  In 32 games this season Noonan has collected (5-13-18).  Noonan was drafted by the Nashville Predators in round 4 #112 overall in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft. Noonan played one season in Vernon (2009-2010) collecting (2-16-18) in 58 regular season games with the Vipers.

Noonan Suffers Shoulder Separation, Likely Done for Season

BOSTON – Boston University men’s hockey defenseman Garrett Noonan suffered a separated shoulder in the win over Northeastern and may miss the rest of the season.

He left after getting hit in the second period and did not return to the game. Coach Jack Parker said the trainer thinks Noonan may need an operation and will be done for the rest of the year.

“Sometimes they strap it down and sometimes they don’t, but it was a pretty severe [separation]. It was an absolutely clean hit,” Parker said. “Northeastern kid was coming around the net and just hit him shoulder to shoulder. It was an absolutely clean hit, there was no problem with that. Just caught him the wrong way.”

Parker said he will spot Matt Ronan as the sixth defenseman. Ronan played twice this season, when BU travelled to Maine and Jake Moscatel was injured.

“I’ve been up there with him, I know how it feels. But I know he’s kept a positive attitude too and and he’s working hard. I know he’s going to be ready if coach calls his number,” Moscatel said.

“He can play forward and D and if he gets a chance he’ll be excited. I know coach will trust him out there.”

The Vipers finished their season in dramatic fashion, winning each of their last four games by a single goal. The latest win, Saturday's 3-2 overtime thriller against Merritt, gave the team and their fans a good feeling to carry them until the new season starts in September.

In Prince George last Friday, Brendan Persley scored an overtime winner. This Friday, he set up Colton Sparrow's winner with 27 seconds remaining in the third period versus Penticton. And this Saturday, he notched another winner at 1:28 of the second overtime.

The deciding blow came during three-on-three play when Andrew Tegeler drove to the net while being hounded by Sebastian Pare. Tegeler was unable to force the puck past Centennial goalie Tyler Steel, but Persley jumped on the loose puck.

Persley and Tegeler were prominent in the Viper scoring on Saturday. At 13:02 of the third period Tegeler knotted the score at 2-2 when he drove down the left wing and powered a shot past Steel.

The Centennials had taken a 2-1 lead with goals by John Saunders in the second period and Jeff Wight midway through the third. Tegeler's 2-2 goal came just 24 seconds after Wight's marker.
Back in the first period, during a major penalty assessed to Payton Schafer for kneeing Mike Roberts, Mitch McAllister had opened the scoring at 4:42 with a shot that hit Steel from the side and deflected in. Persley and Bryce Eviston assisted on the Vipers' first power play goal in eight games.

At that point, McAllister had scored four of the Viper's last six goals and had assisted on the other two, over a span of three games.

The McAllister/Persley/Roberts line has been productive for the Vipers during the season-concluding win streak. Unfortunately, Mike Roberts suffered a painful charley horse when he was kneed by Payton Schaefer early in the game.

Losing Roberts compounded the shortage of Viper forwards because only nine dressed for the game, as they have for the last four contests. As a result, and as an attempt to give Michael Statchuk a chance to count his first BCHL goal, Jason Williamson moved Statchuk to a forward position.

Statchuk looked very comfortable up front but although he generated some chances in the second and third, the puck didn't bounce his way.

The three graduating 20-year-olds, Brett Corkey, Marc Hetnik, and Andrew Tegeler, finished their Junior careers on a high note. Corkey, who elected to stay with the Vipers at the trading deadline, said that he was "happy to win these last four games for the fans who've stuck with us through thick and thin. The big crowds here this weekend meant a lot to us."

Coach Jason Williamson gets the last word. "Too little, too late, I know, but I'm really proud of how the guys have pulled together, with a whole line of forwards in sick bay. Next May at the RBC Cup, we plan to do what we did tonight - win the last game of the year!"

Snake Bytes

* With a 6-2-0-2 burst in their last 10 games, the Vipers pulled into a tie with Trail for fifth place in the Interior Division.

* The Vipers have 18 players eligible to return next year. Factor in the league requirement to include four rookies each season along with the players coming from Nanaimo and Surrey in return for Tambellini and Hadley, and the Viper brain trust will have difficult decisions to make over the summer.
* Attendance was strong on the weekend, with 2011 coming through the turnstiles on Friday and 1873 on Saturday.
* Now that their hockey season is complete, the Viper players have time to devote to their academics. Brett Corkey, Marc Hetnik, and Andrew Tegeler are each taking three university classes.

One team was fighting for first overall in the B.C. Hockey League. The other was playing for plain ol’ pride.

The latter squad persevered as the Vernon Vipers outlasted the Penticton Vees for a thrilling 3-2 win Friday night at Wesbild Centre.

Third-year forward Colton Sparrow (8th goal) netted the winner with 27 seconds to go in regulation, converting a gorgeous 2-on-1 saucer feed from Brendan Persley in front of 2,000 fans.

“Feels pretty good beating a rival like that in a barn burner of a game,” said Sparrow, a Vernon native.

Sparrow wasn’t exactly shocked to see both teams come out hard, even though the result had little bearing on the Interior Division standings. The 20-25-1-9 Vipers will finish last, while the first-place Vees (35-15-0-5) are guaranteed home-ice advantage for at least two playoff rounds.

“Didn’t surprise me at all. That’s the way we’ve been playing the last four, five games and we’re just keeping on rolling.”

Vernon had hopes of finishing the year on a four-game win streak as they ended the regular season against the Merritt Centennials (31-17-3-4) Saturday night at Wesbild Centre.

Rookie forward Mitch McAllister continued his hot streak Friday, drawing an assist on Sparrow’s winner and recording Vernon’s other two snipes in the first period. He has five points and first-star recognition in his last two games.

“Sometimes it takes guys a while to get used to Junior hockey and how we have to play,” said Vipers’ head coach Jason Williamson of McAllister’s ever-improving play. “One of the reasons we brought him here is he plays with that jam and I’m proud of his effort.”

McAllister (5th and 6th) opened the scoring after some terrific play by linemates Persley and Michael Roberts. Persley knocked down a Penticton clearing attempt and passed cross-ice to Roberts, who skillfully took the puck off his skate and fed McAllister for a top-shelf snipe.

For his second goal, McAllister crashed the Penticton zone on a late line change and caught the Vees’ defence standing still as he pounced on a puck as it squirted out from the corner. Netminder Chad Katunar (25 saves) was also caught off guard, as he was beaten five-hole at 7:33.

Brad McClure (28th) snapped a quick shot through traffic to pull Penticton within one before the first intermission.

The Vees really started to press the tempo in the second frame, but Vernon keeper Austin Smith (34 saves) kept them at bay. He denied Michael Rebry from in close right off a faceoff, and earlier recorded two stellar saves of Brock Balson to preserve the Vipers’ lead.

“His last two games he’s been the difference,” said Williamson. “He’s got his swagger back and it’s good to see.

“It was a pretty big game for them (Penticton) and our guys are playing with a lot of pride and energy right now. Unfortunately for us it’s too little, too late, but there are a lot of bright spots with this organization moving forward.”

After a scoreless second period, John Siemer (24th) finally solved Smith with a second-effort goal from the side of the net.

Penticton centreman Jedd Soleway, a Vernon product and former Viper who was traded to the Vees earlier in the season, said the loss was a tough one to take as it might have cost them first overall.

“We had a few good chances and could have won that game,” said the rugger power forward. “We just had a few mistakes and lapses mentally that cost us.

“We have short goals right now. We want to come into playoffs with a bang and swagger. We wanted to win that game badly.”

Soleway seems to have made a flawless transition to the ultra-talented Vees. He has 28 points (14-14) in 22 games.

“It’s been a really comfortable change,” he said. “I feel good in Penticton and I feel good every time I’m on the ice.

The up-tempo game featured just one penalty, a high sticking minor to Vernon d-man Ryan Renz.

Vernon 3 Merritt 2 (Double Overtime)

For anyone who could not attend or watch tonight’s Vipers game here are my thoughts and views from tonight’s game. You may agree or disagree but we all have our own view and opinion on any game we watch. This is my opinion and my thoughts on how I saw tonight’s game. I try to be unbiased and give a fare recap on both sides. Thanks for stopping by & visiting my blog.

I was at tonight's BCHL game as Vernon defeated Merritt 3-2 in double overtime in front of 1,873 fans at the Wesbild Centre.

Starting Goaltenders:

Vernon:  Danny Todosychuk
Merritt:  Tyler Steel

1st Period:  The Vipers would get a five minute powerplay just 2:01 into the game after Payton Schaefer went knee on knee with Michael Roberts.  Roberts would be very slow to get up and leave the hockey game and not return.  Schaefer would get five minutes for kneeing and tossed from the game.  Vernon struggled with the man advantage, having troubles setting up the Vipers were unable to generate any real pressure early.  Mitch McAllister tried feeding Mason Blacklock at the side of the net but McAllister's pass went in and off Tyler Steel giving the Vipers a 1-0 lead at 4:42 Bryce Eviston and Brendan Persley collected the assists.  Still on the powerplay, Vernon would finally settle down and create a few opportunities late.  Mitch McAllister tried setting up Brendan Persley in the slot but Persley couldnt connect on the pass, before Mason Blacklock was stopped in front, Liam Board tried putting home the rebound but missed the open side of the cage as the powerplay come to an end.  Just shortly after the powerplay the Cents on a three on two, Diego Cuglietta with a low snap shot from the circle just missed the far corner.  Merritt slowly started to roll along as the Vipers were back on their heels as the Centennials with some good pressure were the better of the two teams.  The Cents with all kinds of pressure couldnt generate any real good scoring chances as the Vipers were having trouble clearing the zone and getting through the neutral zone.  The Vipers were outshooting Merritt 4-1 after the powerplay but now it was the Centennials outshooting Vernon at one point 9-4.  Vernon would come on late and regroup, Craig Martin on the odd man rush tried getting the pass through but Kevin Lohan come up with a solid defensive play breaking up the Vipers rush.  After one stopage in play some pushing and shoving occured in and around the Cents net, before the scrum was broken up.  Very little scoring opportunities at both ends of the rink as Merritt was the better of the two teams but were down 1-0 after 20 minutes of play.  The Centennials outshot the Vipers 12-8.

2nd Period:  Merritt would get their first powerplay just fourty five seconds into the middle frame.  The Vipers with a good penalty kill early before Danny Todosychuk had to be alert stopping Sebastien Pare in close before making a quick glove save off Silvan Harper on the rebound as Vernon would kill off the minor.  Not alot of action in the second period as both teams sorta slowed the game down as the play became scrambly at times.  Seven minutes in Mason Blacklock on a two on one kept and shot forcing Vernon product Tyler Steel to make the save.  Just a few minutes later Andrew Tegeler with a few nice dangles in close was stopped by Steel.  A few minutes later Craig Martin with a nice move in close couldnt get one past Steel as the Vipers with a flurry of chances.  A few shifts later Sebastien Pare had a great opportunity in close but couldnt beat Todosychuk.  The Cents would eventually tie the game after John Saunders point shot went through a maze of players beat Danny Todosychuk who was screened tying the game 1-1 at 11:12 Scott Patterson & Sam Johnson picked up the helpers.  For a second time tonight some pushing and shoving took place after a whistle as both teams exchanged a few shots and words before the scrum was broken up.  Merritt with a great chance to take the lead but Colton Sparrow playing goal for the Vipers made a big save in the crease after Danny Todosychuk was pulled way out of the crease on the Centennials wrap around.  Sparrow sliding across using his foot-skate make the kick save keeping this game tied.  Both teams exchanged powerplays late with no real good chances.  A fairly even played period as it was tied 1-1 after 40 minutes of play.  Vernon outshot Merritt 12-11.

3rd Period:  The Vipers would get an early powerplay, Mason Blacklock and Craig Martin with chances couldnt capitalize as Merritt would kill off the penalty.  About five minutes later Merritt would get a shot with the man advantage but a good penalty kill by the Vipers would kill off the minor.  Michael Statchuk who was playing up front got a shot up high on Tyler Steel wich handcuffed the Merritt goaltender who had to make a tough save.  Again not alot of scoring opportunities as both teams were very evenly matched.  Just after the powerplay John Saunders setup Jeff Wright who was in deep ripped a rocket from in close went off the post and in beating Todosychuk at 12:38 giving Merritt a 2-1 lead.  Saunders and Scott Patterson with the assists.  But back come Vernon as the Vipers would tie the game on the next shift, Liam Board fed Andrew Tegeler who drove hard to thenet and then looked to beat Steel fivehole at 13:02 tying the game 2-2.  Board and Geoff Crisfield with the helpers.  The Cents would get another shot with the powerplay about a minute later, but it wouldnt last too long as Merritt would take a penalty giving Vernon a late man advantage.  The Vipers with some pressure couldnt get any real scoring plays as Merritt would kill off the minor.  The Vipers come very close to taking the lead after Geoff Crisfield's point shot handcuffed Tyler Steel who had to juggle the puck before falling down in the crease keeping the puck out with just 1:59 remaining.  Not alot of scoring opportunities but the Vipers did have the better of the chances.  It was tied 2-2 after 60 minutes of play.  Merritt outshot Vernon 7-5.

Overtime:  Vernon carried the majority of the play early and often.  Vipers captain Brett Corkey tried feeding Andrew Tegeler for the breakaway but Tegeler just couldnt get off a good enough shot while being chased down.  The Vipers carried the better of the play and come close to ending it after Colton Sparrow was stopped in close, and then Mason Blacklock shot and fired high and over the open cage on the rebound.  The Cents had a great chance to pull out the victory after Dylan Chanter was alone in the slot, walked in before beating Todosychuk but hit the post with 1:45 remaining.       Vernon was the better of the teams but it was still tied 2-2 after 65 minutes of play.

Double Overtime:  Merritt come out hard in the final frame and was really taking it to the Vipers.  Some hard work and pressure but the Cents couldnt generate much for offence before Andrew Tegeler carried the play in across the Cents blueline, drove hard towards the net tried going around Tyler Steel before Brendan Persley gobbled up the rebound going upstairs over Steel for the OT winner as the Vipers bench erupted onto the ice.  Vernon would defeat Merritt 3-2 in double overtime outshooting the Cents 3-2.  At the end of the game former Vernon Viper Luke Pierce and the Cents coaching staff shook hands with the Vipers coaching staff, while Pierce waited on the bench to congratulate and shake hands with Viper captain Brett Corkey. 

Top Players:  (Vernon)

Mitch McAllister (1 goal)  Has now scored in four straight games and been playing his best hockey of the season.  McAllister who has been one of the Vipers hardest working players all season played very well tonight.  This kid never stops skating, works and battles hard all game.  Not one of the biggest kids isnt afraid from the physical play and gives it his all every shift. 

Craig Martin I thought had a very good game for Vernon tonight.  Had some good chances, was skating hard and generated some chances through out the game. 

Andrew Tegeler (1 goal & 1 assist)  Played well in his final game as a Viper.  Tegeler who wont be returning next season has really played very well for the Vipers since coming over at the December, 1st BCHL card deadline.  A strong skater who is hard to knock off the puck.

Jason Bird played very well defensively.  Was steady on the Vernon backend all night.

Colton Sparrow I thought played his second straight good game.  Was really working hard and come up with a huge defensive play late in the 2nd period making a big save in the crease on a Cents wrap around.

Brendan Persley (1 goal & 1 assist)  Another kid who never quits.  Persley is another Viper who works his tail off and comes to play game in and game out.  Persley generated some chances tonight, battled hard and was very good on the penalty kill. 

Game Thoughts:  (Vernon)

Well for the first time all season the Vipers pulled off their longest winning streak of the year at four games.  Im not sure what happened after the BCHL trade deadline but this team has improved and been playing its best hockey of the season the last two months.  This team never quits, battles and competes hard and has been in most of the games since mid to late January.  Where was this team at the start of the season?  I didnt think tonight's game was that exciting or entertaining but the Vipers played well and gave the fans a chance to cheer at the end in dramatic fashion winning in overtime.  Not alot of scoring chances but I thought Vernon had the better of the opportunities.  Brett Corkey, Andrew Tegeler and Marc Hetnik all played their final game as a Viper as all three twenty yr olds will be moving on next year.  Being a longtime season ticket holder-fan the past week has been tough knowing the Vipers wont be in the playoffs for a second straight season.  When your use to winning and watching long playoff runs, missing the playoffs is unexceptable.  I know Vernon fans have been very fortunate over the last twenty years of watching and seeing some great Junior teams so having the Vipers miss the playoffs is very tough.  Next season does look very bright, with lots of if not most of the team returning next season, as well as new recruits and any off season trades that happen, the Vipers have a very good neucleaus heading into next season.  Id like to take this time to thank and wish all the best to the graduating Viper players that wont be back next season.  Thanks for the memories and I wish you all the best in your hockey and life careers.

Dane Birks I thought played a steady game for Merritt on the backend.

Brent Fletcher didnt stand out at the start of the contest but really got his game going as the game went on.  I thought Fletcher was very good and dangerous at times in the 3rd and in overtime.

Sebastien Pare with a few good chances also played well for the Cents.  Generated some offence and played well.

Silvan Harper also played well, worked hard and competed all night.

John Saunders (1 goal & 1 assist)  Saunders who attended the Vipers training camp the last few summers played very well on the Centennials blueline.  Was very steady and jumped up into the play.

Richard Sabourin also played well on the Cents backend.  Jumped up into the play and was very steady on the blueline. 

Game Thoughts:  (Merritt)

With the Centennials and West Kelowna Warriors tied heading into tonight's action the Cents needed a big win but come away with a point, wasnt enough after the Warriors big win in Cowichan Valley tonight.  With the win West Kelowna will take 2nd place and host Games 1 & 2 of the BCHL playoffs vs Merritt starting next weekend.  I thought Merritt played well but didnt have that same hard working effortt they have shown in pasts visits to the Wesbild Centre.  The Cents didnt generate alot of offensive chances and at times their big name players were not noticable.  The Centennials now winless in six straight head into the playoffs on a bit of a skid.

The Vernon Vipers will play their final game of the regular season tonight, finishing the 2012-13 season at home to Merritt.  The 6th place Vipers are going to miss the BCHL playoffs for a second straight season.  The Vipers have won three straight for the second time all season are coming off a 3-2 win over the visiting Penticton Vees last night.  Vernon going for their first four game winning streak of the season tonight.  This is the second meeting of the week between the Centennials and Vipers after Vernon knocked off the Cents 2-1 in Merritt Wednesday night.  The Vipers have won three of their last five and are 5-3-0-2 in their last ten games.

The Merritt Centennials make their third and final visit to the Wesbild Centre are coming off a 5-4 OT loss at home to Salmon Arm last night.  The Centennials sit tied for 2nd place with West Kelowna who plays their final game in Cowichan Valley tonight.  Merritt has struggled as of late dropping three straight and going winless in their last five games.  The Cents have just two wins in their last seven.  The Cents are 4-4-1-1 in their last ten games.  Who ever clinches second place will get home ice advantage between West Kelowna & Merritt in the opening round of the BCHL playoffs.

Once again, Austin Smith's goaltending and Mitch McAllister's offence proved to be the difference as the Vipers maintained their winning streak with a dramatic 3-2 decision over the visiting Penticton Vees.

Although the Vees are 25 points ahead of the Vipers in the standings, the Vipers were the better squad in the early going as they jumped out to a 2-0 first period lead thanks to a pair of fine strikes by Mitch McAllister.

McAllister's first goal came at 4:48. Brendan Persley choked off an attempted clearance at the Vee blue line and nudged the puck to Mike Roberts along the left boards. Roberts found McAllister in the right faceoff circle and McAllister promptly roofed it over Chad Katunar's catching glove.

 McAllister, who is starting to earn the nickname of "FlashMac," struck again at 7:33. Craig Martin raced into the left corner in the Vee zone to retrieve a shoot-in and fed FlashMac for a low one-timer that beat Katunar low, stick side.

Stung by the Viper challenge, the Vees surged back to show the offensive flair that has made them the BCHL's second highest scoring team. Before the first period was done, they cut into the Viper lead with a Brad McClure rising shot from the high slot at 18:10.

After a scoreless second period that saw the Vees push hard at the beginning and end while the Vipers were stronger in the middle 10 minutes, the Vees eventually tied the game at 11:23 of the third period.

John Siemer's sliding backhand from a scramble around the Viper crease finally dented Smith's armour after he had made several excellent saves on point blank Vee shots in the second and third periods.

The teams traded chances in an exciting last eight minutes, but both goalies held the fort.  TJ Dumonceaux had an excellent chance to put the Vipers ahead with about five minutes remaining, but his hard wrist shot just went over the net.

Just when it looked like the game was destined for overtime, Brendan Persley made another play at the Vee blue line.  This time, he went in on the right wing while Colton Sparrow busted to the Vee goal. Sparrow converted Persley's goal mouth pass at 19:33 to send the 2011 Wesbild Centre fans into a controlled frenzy.

Mitch McAllister also collected an assist on the winning goal, his fifth point in two games this week. As in Merritt on Wednesday, he was named the game's first star.

Strangely, Austin Smith was not included in the three-star selection, even though his assured play prevented at least three Penticton goals.

Once again, the Vipers were able to dress only nine forwards because Braedan Russell and Dexter Dancs are injured and Logan Mick is ill.

The Vipers conclude their season with Saturday's hosting of the Merritt Centennials, who are tied with the West Kelowna Warriors for second place in the Interior.

For anyone who could not attend or watch tonight’s Vipers game here are my thoughts and views from tonight’s game. You may agree or disagree but we all have our own view and opinion on any game we watch. This is my opinion and my thoughts on how I saw tonight’s game. I try to be unbiased and give a fare recap on both sides. Thanks for stopping by & visiting my blog.

I was at tonight's BCHL game as Vernon defeated Penticton 3-2 in front of 2,011 fans at the Wesbild Centre.

Starting Goaltenders:

Before the game former Vernon Vipers captain Lennie Rampone presented Vipers defenceman Marc Hetnik with a gift for the Vipers player of the month for February.

1st Period:  The Vipers got off to a quick start, come out with lots of jump & energy looked good early.  But it was the Vees who come close to opening the scoring about four minutes into the contest after Austin Smith made the first save Mike Rebry couldnt hit the empty cage on the rebound missing the open net on a great chance.  On the same play the Vipers come back the other way, Michael Roberts, Mitch McAllister and Brendan Persley with some nice tic tac toe passing setup McAllister who beat Chad Katunar at 4:48 giving Vernon the 1-0 lead.  Persley & Roberts collected the assists.  Just over two minutes later the Vipers with some hard work down low, Craig Martin found Mitch McAllister open in the slot who scored his second of the game giving the Vipers a early 2-0 lead over the defending champs.  McAllister at 7:33 was assisted by Craig Martin.  Vernon with the edge in play was outshooting the Vees 6-3 just before the midway mark.  Penticton slowly got their game going and turned the tables in the second half as the Vees with a strong forecheck carried the better of the play and were buzzing.  Brock Balson with two chances in tight couldnt beat Austin Smith who was solid all night made two huge back to back saves off Balson keeping this a two goal game.  Vernon who without a shot for atleast six or seven minutes were outshooting the Vees 6-3 at one point were now being outshot 14-6 as Penticton was all over the Vipers.  Austin Smith was strong making several key saves in the opening period.  The Vees would finally get on the scoreboard late, after a faceoff win deep in the Vernon zone Troy Stecher setup Brad McClure who roofed his shot high and over Smith at 18:10 cutting the Viper lead to within a goal.  Stecher with the lone helper on the goal.  The Vipers were the better of the two teams in the first half while the Vees were the better of the two teams in the second half.  Penticton outshot Vernon 16-8.  The Vipers with a 2-1 lead after 20 minutes of play.

2nd Period:  The Vees started the second period right where they left off the 1st period.  Penticton with all kinds of pressure early come out strong attacking the Vipers.  The Vees come very close to tying the game early, just three and a half minutes into the middle frame the Austin Smith stopped the Vees on a wrap around attempt before robbing Louie Nanne in close.  Smith somehow reached across with his blocker to stop the puck in mid air before smothering the puck.  Just a few minutes later Former Coquitlam Express John Siemer and Brad McClure went in on the two on one, Siemer setup McClure who was stopped by Smith.  Vernon who couldnt get across or through the neutral zone was having all kinds of trouble getting the puck into the Penticton zone.  Smith then made another huge save off a reaction save.  A quick shot from the point got through traffic before Smith somehow stuck out his left pad making a toe save keeping this a one goal game.  Penticton dominated the play early and often.  The Vipers did manage to slowy come back late in the period, as Vernon played much better in the final five or six minutes.  With four minutes remaining Ryan Renz's point shot was stopped by Chad Katunar who come out making a huge pad save but gave up the big rebound, with a huge crowd going to the net somehow Katunar was able to recover smothering the puck in the crease stopping the play.  Just two minutes later Laim Board with a great chance in close was stopped by Katunar who looked good in the final minutes making some big saves.  The Vipers with a few flurries in and around the Penticton net come up with some good chances and managed to catchup and then pass the Vees in shots.  Vipers captain Brett Corkey with a great end to end rush in the dying seconds got in close but couldnt hit the net after putting a nice move in tight with nine seconds remaining. On the same play a quick heads up play setup Brad McClure going back the other way for a breakaway in the dying seconds but McClure missed the net after also putting a nice move on Austin Smith just before the buzzer.  Two great scoring chances at both ends of the rink in the final seconds.  The Vees dominated the play for most of the period before Vernon come back late with a good push.  The Vipers outshot the Vees 13-9.  Vernon with a 2-1 lead after 40 minutes of play. 

3rd Period:  Just a few minutes into the final frame Smith come up with a quick glove save keeping this a one goal game.  Both teams were fairly even to start with very little scoring oportunities.  Just before the halfway mark Colton Sparrow with a few nice moves cut in and out before getting off a shot from the slot that was stopped by Katunar.  Just over three minutes later a scramble in and around the Vipers crease, Austin Smith who was down couldnt seem to cover the puck before the Vees kept banging away at the loose puck before John Siemer at the end of a long shift slid the puck in shortside tying the game 2-2 at 11:13 former Salmon Arm Silverbacks defenceman Sean Flanagan with the lone assist.  This goal seemed to give Penticton some life as the Vees slowly come on and carried the edge in play for the next few minutes.  A minute later the Vees would get the games first and only powerplay, with some good pressure Penticton was unable to really generate any real offensive chances before in the final twenty seconds of the man advantage, Hames De Haas leaned into a hard shot that got through traffic beat Austin Smith but went off the crossbar as Penticton come very close to taking their first lead of the night.  Vernon would kill off the penalty.  Just a few minutes later TJ Dumonceaux would get a good opportunity after a turnover, Dumonceaux who just like Sparrow went in and out before getting off a shot from the slot but missed the net going high and over the goal.  Not alot of scoring opportunities in the third in a very tight game.  In the final minute of play Mitch McAllister setup Brendan Persley who made a nice move in the neutral zone setup Colton Sparrow in front on the odd man rush beat Chad Katunar at 19:33 giving Vernon the 3-2 lead as the Wesbild Centre exploded.  Persley and McAllister picked up the helpers.  The Vipers with a good job kept the play inside the neutral zone before the Vees were able to get Katunar to the bench for the extra attacker in the dying seconds.  Penticton would get across and into the Vipers zone but couldnt get off a shot before the buzzer would sound as Vernon would pick up just its second victory over the Vees this season.  Penticton carried a slight edge in play and was the better of the two teams but give the Vipers credit they didnt quit and kept battling coming away with the winner in a mean nothing game.  Penticton outshot Vernon 11-7.

Top Players:  (Vernon)

The line of Mitch McAllister (2 goals & 1 assist), Brendan Persley (2 assists) & Michael Roberts (1 assist) was the Vipers best line tonight.  McAllister who has scored in three straight games for Vernon scored two quick back to back goals early in the game to give the Vipers an early 2-0 lead.  McAllister with a strong game played very well this evening.  Brendan Persley & Michael Roberts also played very well, all three added a ton of jump and energy to the Vipers lineup.

Colton Sparrow (1 goal)  Played very well tonight, played with lots of jump and hustle.  Was skating hard and played hard all night.  One of the Vipers hardest working players tonight.

Liam Board played a strong game up front, was skating and creating chances. 

Ryan Renz I thought played very well on the Vipers blueline.  Renz made a few smart heads up plays was steady for the Vipers on the backend.

Austin Smith (34 saves) Had a very strong game.  Smith who has played extremely well for the Vipers this season, keeping them in alot of games over the year was very solid between the pipes tonight.

Game Thoughts:  (Vernon)

For just the second time all season the Vipers have won three straight games.  Vernon won three straight back in late October-early November has had troubles putting together a long winning streak all season.  I thought Penticton was the better of the two teams tonight but give Vernon credit, they battled and competed until the end and didnt quit pulling out a exciting 3-2 victory in a game where it meant nothing to the Vipers other then pride and showing the coaching staff who wants to play here next season.  Ive said it a few times, this team has been a different team since the BCHL trade deadline and been playing much better hockey the last two months.  Ive seen some improvement and alot more excitement and energy in the boys.  Its tough this time of year knowing going to the games this weekend will be the Vipers final two games of the season, in games where they dont really mean anything.  So for the Vipers to pull out a big win like tonight was nice to see.  The Vipers will wrap up the regular season with their final game of the year tomorrow night at home vs Merritt.

Thomas Nitsche played a solid game on the Vees blueline.  Was steady all night.

The line of John Siemer (1 goal), Mike Rebry & Brad McClure (1 goal) was Penticton's best unti tonight.  This line worked and competed hard all night, showed alot of offensive side and all three moved the puck well, and have some quick wheels.  This line generated alot of the Vees offensive chances tonight.

Ryan Gropp played well up front for Penticton.  Played hard and didnt back down from the rough going.  Was impressed with his game tonight.

Brock Balson I thought also played very well, was involved in and around the net and also played well at both ends of the rink.

Chad Katunar (25 saves)  Played well for the Vees, didnt have to make alot of huge saves but kept the Vees in the game at times.

Game Thoughts:  (Penticton)

Just like the Vipers tonight was a mean nothing game for the Vees.  Already winning the Interior Division Pennent the Vees are just waiting to find out who they will play in the opening round of the BCHL playoffs.  Penticton will finish the regular season in Trail tomorrow night.  I thought the Vees got off to a slow start but give them credit, they battled back to tie the game and come very close to almost sending it to overtime.  Penticton with some good forecheck on the Vipers worked hard, competed and outhustled the Vipers for most of the night.  The Vees also come up with alot of blocked shots through out the game, the Vipers at times had troubles getting pucks through after the Vees with several blocked shots.  I thought Penticton played well defensively limiting Vernon's opportunities and chances and didnt allow the Vipers to get alot of bodies in and around Chad Katunar.  Can the Vees repeat as BCHL Champs? Or try and win back to back RBC Cups?
