The Vernon Vipers have added some leadership to their roster. Vernon has
acquired 19 year old Sam Anzai from the Drayton Valley Thunder of the Alberta Junior Hockey League in exchange for Future Considerations.

The 5’11 190 pound forward was the captain of the Thunder and 4 goals and 13 points in 22 games this season.

He is expected to make his Viper debut on Wednesday when the team visits Wenatchee to take on the Wild.

Vernon had an open roster spot following the trade of Finn Evans in late October.

Anzai was the captain of Drayton Valley and their second highest scorer. The team is in last place overall, and by a lot, in the AJHL. They have a goal differential of minus 65. The next worst team was minus 33. Yikes. With the playoffs not likely this season it was good of them to move a veteran player. Anzai doesn't appear to have a scholarship yet, so maybe we'll see him even next year.

I was curious when Mark would fill his final roster spot. It will be interesting to see what or who goes the other way for the "futures", hopefully cash so they don't lose a good young player at year end. You do not obtain a quality player without paying up. I am sure Anzai will be a nice addition to the Vipers however I question the need for another small, skilled forward. I would have preferred to see a player with less scoring potential rather one with more size who is strong on the boards, hits and is willing to stand up for his team mates. I'm sure Mark knows what he wants. Time will tell.

For the second time in two weeks the Vipers have made a trade, bringing in a veteran forward from the Alberta Junior Hockey League.

With Brett Stapley, Ty Taylor & Jack Judson invited to Team Canada West selection camp and Sol Seibel & Tanner Wishnowski out of the lineup with injuries, the Vipers will be shorthanded once again here shortly. I'm glad Mark Ferner has filled his open roster spot after going with a 22 man roster for the past month now. With all the recent injuries, the Vipers have played shorthanded and need a veteran player in the lineup over an affiliated player.

Anzai not the biggest kid but a veteran 19 yr old former Thunder captain will bring leadership to the Viper lineup. Second in Thunder scoring, will have to wait and see where Anzai fits into the Snakes lineup.

With the December 1st card deadline looming, it will be interesting to see if the Vipers make any other moves.

I'm hoping Tanner Wishnowski gets healthy and returns to the lineup soon. A big loss and an important player the Vipers are missing.
