Lakers Name Ex Viper Defenceman Renz Assistant Captain:

The Lake Superior State Lakers have named former Vernon Vipers defenceman Ryan Renz assistant captain.

Renz is in his fourth year with the Lakers, is pointless in nine games this year. Renz played parts of four seasons in Vernon (2011-2014).

The Prince George Spruce Kings traded Ryan Renz to Vernon January 10th 2011 for Todd Skirving & future considerations. Renz played in 160 games with the Vipers collecting (10-goals-52-assists-62-points). Renz was captain in his final year in Junior hockey with the 2014 Royal Bank Cup host Vernon Vipers.

2017-18 Lake Superior State Hockey Captains Announced

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. - Senior defenseman Aidan Wright has been chosen to as the Lake Superior State University men's ice hockey team captain for the 2017-18 season team in an announcement made this Tuesday (Sept. 26) by LSSU fourth-year head coach Damon Whitten.

Senior defenseman Ryan Renz and junior forward Gage Torrel were named the Lakers' assistant captains for the upcoming 2017-18 campaign.  A season ago, Wright and Renz both served as alternate captains for Lake Superior State.

"I'm excited about this leadership group," said LSSU head coach Damon Whitten.  "We had one senior last season so it's great to have four seniors who will be a a valuable part of our leadership corp.  Each of these guys leads in different ways and all of them will prove to be a valuable asset for our coaching staff."

Wright, who was named a 2016-17 American Hockey Coaches Association (AHCA) All-American Scholar, posted a personal career season-high seven points on a goal and a career-best six assists to go with a plus one efficiency rating while appearing in all 36 LSSU games last season.  He finished tied for 11th-place among the 2016-17 Lakers in assists and his 66 blocked shots ranked the second most on the squad.  Wright, a native of Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, registered eight points on a goal with seven helpers in 28 Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) encounters to go along with a team second-highest 52 blocked shots.  For his career, Wright has accumulated 16 career points on three goals and 13 assists in 114 appearances during his three-year Lake State career.

A two-time (2015-16 and 2016-17) WCHA Scholar-Athlete Award recipient, Renz also was recognized as a 2016-17 All-American Scholar by the AHCA.  The Laker blueliner garnered all three of his 2016-17 season points on assists in 14 contests and recorded a plus one efficiency rating while blocking six shots by the opposition.  Renz, who hails from Castlegar, British Columbia, tallied the three points in 10 league outings this past season.  In his LSSU career, Renz has two goals with 10 assists for 12 points in 69 games to date.

Torrel is coming off his best season in a Lake Superior State jersey as the forward placed tied for fourth among the 2016-17 Lakers' top points producers with a career season-high 22 points on both a team-leading and career-most 14 goals with a squad 10th-most eight assists in 36 contests.  The Monticello, Minn., native concluded the 2016-17 campaign ranked in a 33rd-place tie on the WCHA's leading points getters and tied for sixth in league goal scoring.  Nationally, Torrel finished tied for 77th place in goals per outing with a 0.39 average.  In his two seasons at Lake State, Torrel has amassed 41 career points with 22 goals and 19 assists to go with three game-winning lamplighters in 74 appearances.

Lake State will begin preparations for the upcoming 2017-18 season this Saturday, Sept. 30, as the Lakers will hold their annual Blue and Gold Intrasquad Game at Taffy Abel Arena in Sault Ste. Marie, Mich.  Opening faceoff is at 3:07 p.m. (EDT) and a donation entry fee in required for admittance with all proceeds going to LSSU Hockey's student cheering section, the Laker Legion.  All funds collected will be utilitzed for a LSSU student fan bus to an away Laker regular-season game during the 2017-18 campaign.
