VERNON. B.C.  NOVEMBER 23, 2016

The Vernon Vipers have made a few roster moves as they prepare for a weekend road swing in Wenatchee, Coquitlam and Langley.

The Snakes have traded Defenceman Carter Stephenson to the Salmon Arm Silverbacks in exchange for Defenceman Cameron Trott and future considerations. Nineteen year old Trott is in his second season in the BCHL tallying 6 goals and 24 assists last season in 56 games.  This season Trott has 3 goals and 3 assists in 19 games. The product of Anmore BC was part of the 2015 World Jr A Challenge Selection Camp as well as on the NHL preliminary watch list.

The 6’2 205 pound Trott is expected to join the Vipers on the ice Thursday. Stephenson was in his first full season with the Snakes after spending time last season as an AP.

Vernon would also like to announce they have released Goaltender Cole Demers and have  added 19 year old Goaltender Darion Hanson from Youngstown of the USHL. Hanson who has already committed to Union for next season spent last season in the North American Hockey League where he was named an East Division All-Star and a member of the First Rookie Team.  He appeared in 34 games for the Aston Rebels posting a 2.28 goals against average and a save percentage of .914.

The Vipers would like to wish Carter and Cole all the best while welcoming Cameron and Darion to the hockey club.

Next home action for Vernon is December 2nd when they host the West Kelowna Warriors on Teddy Bear Toss Night sponsored by 1075 Kiss Fm and presented by Match Eatery.

SALMON ARM, BC NOVEMBER 23rd, 2016

Silverbacks President/General Manager Troy Mick announced today the club has traded 97 D-Man Cameron Trott and future considerations to the Vernon Vipers BCHL for 98 D-Man Carter Stephenson.

Carter is from West Vancouver, BC and is 6’1 195 lb right shot mobile D-Man. He has 5 goals 8 assists for 13 points so far in his rookie year. He had 6 goals 22 assists last year with the North West Giants of the BCMML and played 2 games as an AP last year with the Backs.

Carter is somebody we have had our eye on for sometime and excited for him to join our program. He now joins his former teammates from the North West Giants of the BCMML Josh Latta & Justin Wilson on the Backs roster.

“On behalf of the Silverbacks organization we would like to thank Cam for the last year and a half that he has spent with us and welcome our newest player Carter to the Silverbacks family” Stated Mick

The Backs travel this weekend to Merritt & PG for a 2 game road trip.

I was shocked to hear yesterday the Vipers traded Carter Stephenson. I thought Stevenson and Michael Ufberg were the Vipers two top defencemen. Stephenson impressed me as an "AP" last season and has looked very good this year. Stephenson has more points then Cameron Trott who is a year older and has a little more size, has played well against the Vipers in his career.

I was shocked when the Vipers started the season with two seventeen yr old goaltenders. Once the season started and both settled into the league, I thought both played well. It looked like Ty Taylor had taken over the starters job, having played the last five games. But I think either goaltender could have been the #1 guy this season. I kind of figured the Vipers would look for a more older-veteran goaltender, but a little surprised they released Cole Demers and didn't try and trade him for someone in return or future considerations, instead of just letting him go for nothing. Don't know much about Darion Hanson, other then his stats and what was said in the paper. His numbers sound good.

I think the Vipers still need a goal scorer-veteran forward who can put the puck in the net. Last year and again this year, the Vipers lack scoring and don't have a proven goal scorer.

With the BCHL Card Deadline coming up next week, will the Vipers make anymore moves?

Yes, the trade was a bit of a shock and leaves questions unanswered. It appears as if Stephenson and Trott are very comparable players. Neither have scholarships yet so could each return for next year. Although Stephenson technically has two more years in league it depends on a scholly and when that school wants him. Time will tell which team won this one but for now it is very even.

Goaltending is less of a question. It was nice to see two young guys but few teams would play the entire season with youth. I think this was a fact of letting them play to see who was the keeper and who would move on. I think it was inevitable that an older guy would be coming in. I agree the shocking part is that the Vipers got nothing for Demers via trade or attempted to reassign him to Junior B.

Yes, the Vipers will make at least one more move. I hear there is player in town waiting to sign and would mean a current Viper would have to be traded or released. No guess who is moving on but there are a few current players who are virtually invisible in games. They have had more than enough games to prove their worth. I applaud Mark for not being content.

Wenatchee will be a test tomorrow night. Will you be at the game?

THIS NEXT FEW GAMES SHOULD DECIDE WHO STAYS WITH TEAM OR MOVES ON. I THINK A TRADE WILL BE MADE FOR A FORWARD WITH GOOD STATS. TIME WILL TELL.
