Vernon 4 Coquitlam 3

For anyone who could not attend or watch tonight’s Vipers game here are my thoughts and views from tonight’s game. You may agree or disagree but we all have our own view and opinion on any game we watch. This is my opinion and my thoughts on how I saw tonight’s game. I try to be unbiased and give a fare recap on both sides. Thanks for stopping by & visiting my blog.

I was at tonight's BCHL game as Vernon defeated Coquitlam 4-3 in front of 1,743 fans at the Wesbild Centre.

Starting Goaltenders:

Vernon:  Danny Todosychuck
Coquitlam:  Cole Huggins

Before the game former Vipers captain Lennie Rampone rewarded Vipers forward Mason Blacklock with the Vipers player of the month for January.

1st Period:  Just a minute into the contest Andrew Tegeler with a nice move in front was driving hard towards the goal got off a backhand but couldnt beat Cole Huggins in close who made a nice save with three Vipers going hard to the net.  The Express come right back a minute later after Ben Isarel was setup in the slot but was stopped by Danny Todosychuk who made a big save in close.  Just two minutes later Todosychuk had to come across the crease to make a big pad save off #12 (had no name bar).  For a game between two last place clubs a very quick fast paced opening period with the play going back and and forth at both ends of the rink, especially in the first ten minutes.  Coquitlam playing their third game of a current five game road trip was outshooting Vernon early 6-2 before the Vipers stormed back getting within a few shots.  Vernon with some nice three way passing on a odd man rush made one too many passes on a great opportunity inside the Express blueline.  Coquitlam come close to opening the scoring after a quick shot from the corner looked to handcuff Todosychuck as the puck got through the Viper goaltender rolling through the crease and out the other side.  The Express would get the games first powerplay and capitalize after Adam Rockwood setup Ben Isarel who beat Vipers starting goaltender Danny Todosychuk at 13:08 giving Coquitlam a 1-0 lead.  Rockwood and Adam Rossignol collected the helpers.  The Express would get their second man advantage shortly after and get atleast two or three solid chances but Danny Todosychuk was solid all night making some big saves keeping his club from going down by two as Vernon would excape and kill off the minor.  Coquitlam seemed to get better as the period went along and carried the better of the play in the second half.  Danny Todosychuk then made a nice save off Marc Biega in close.  The Express with the better scoring chances couldnt get that two goal lead after several opportunities.  With 2:45 remaining a nice long stretch pass found Garrett Forster who went in for the breakaway but was denied by Todosychuk who made a big save keeping this a one goal game.  In the final minute Brett Corkey and Ryan Renz with two big shots from the point couldnt get through Express starting goaltender Cole Huggins who stood tall staying in position catching both pucks in the chest area.  The Express had the better scoring chances but both teams were fairly even in the first half before Coquitlam took over the edge in play in the second half and was the better of the two teams.  The Express was up 1-0 after 20 minutes of play.  Coquitlam outshot Vernon 15-8.

2nd Period:  The Vipers would get their first powerplay of the night early getting lots of bodies and traffic to the front of the net but Cole Huggins somehow kept the puck out.  Huggins had to be sharp making atleast two or three tough saves with traffic in front after Coquitlam would kill off the penalty.  Just as the minor expired Michael Statchuk couldnt hold the puck at the blueline allowing for Justin Georgeson and Michael Maciag in for the parcial two on one.  Georgeson kept and shot forcing Danny Todosychuk to make a big right pad save.  The Vipers come right back before Mason Blacklock was alone at the side of the net couldnt beat Huggins who come across to make a big save at the other end.  The Vipers would get their second man advantage of the period and capitalize.  Brett Corkey setup former Coquitlam Express d-man Jason Bird whos blast from the point beat Cole Huggins fivehole tying the game 1-1 at 10:57 Corkey and Andrew Tegeler with the assists.  After the goal Bird skated by the Express bench chriping at his former mates.  Vernon carried the better of the play for most of the period was outshooting Coquitlam 12-3 at the midway mark.  Brendan Persley just about about gave Vernon the lead after a nice toe drag on a parcial three on two but Persley was stopped in close by Cole Huggins.  With a few minutes left in the middle frame Adam Rossignol setup a wide open Zachary Pryzbek who fired high and over the goal on a great opportunity.  Rossignol stayed with the play, scooped up the puck before making his way back out front getting off a quick low shot that was stopped by Danny Todosychuck who made a quick pad save.  Coquitlam would get a late powerplay and make the Vipers pay.  Marc Biega setup Ben Isarel whos hard blast from the point went topshelf giving the Express the lead 2-1 lead at 19:50 Biega and Adam Rockwood picked up the assists.  The Vipers carried the better of the play and were the better of the two teams but were down 2-1 after 40 minutes of play.  Vernon outshot Coquitlam 17-10.

3rd Period:  Both teams got off to a bit of a slow start after not alot of action early.  Bradley Ryan come close to giving the Express a two goal lead early after a quick shot from the point just graized the post.  The Vipers slowly got things going five or six minutes into the final frame.  Vipers captain Brett Corkey with a nice rush up ice carried the play into the Coquitlam zone setup up Andrew Tegeler who wired his shot off the post coming very close to tying the game.  Dexter Dancs with a great chance in front couldnt get enough on his shot missed on a good opportunity in close.  The Vipers with a few good chances in the opening ten minutes started to carry the play.  The Express got a scare after Ben Isarel went knee on knee with Braeden Russell, with no call on the play Isarel slowly skated off limping on one leg but stayed in the game.  Coquitlam captain Malcom McKinney with a great chance in close couldnt beat Todosychuk who made a solid save keeping this a one goal game.  Vernon who carried the edge in play fell down 3-1 after Adam Rossignol setup Zachary Pryzbek on a odd man rush beat Danny Todosychuk fivehole ibn a nice goal at 13:19 Rossignol with the lone helper as fans slowly started to make their way to the exit.  But the Vipers come right back with a few hard shifts before making it a one goal game just two minutes later.  Colton Sparrow's wrap around goal at 15:19 made it 3-2 TJ Dumonceaux and Craig Martin collected the assists.  Just 1:17 later Marc Hetnik called for the pass before tying the game at 16:36 sending the Vipers bench into a frenzy.  Hetnik's goal was unassisted.  Coquitlam would call a timeout right after the game tying goal.  The Vipers with all the momentum would get a late powerplay and capitalize after Andrew Tegeler setup Dexter Dancs beat Cole Huggins at 18:09 giving Vernon their first lead of the game.  Tegeler and Brett Corkey with the helpers.  The Express would pull Cole Huggins with fourty four seconds remaining got the puck in deep, Geoff Crisfield who couldnt clear the zone turned the final thirty seconds into a fire drill for the Vipers as the Express buzzing had two or three real good opportunities in front but didnt get the bounce before the Vipers would clear the zone with just a few seconds left and pull out the huge third period comeback with a 4-3 victory and taking the season series 2-0.  The Vipers outshot the Express 10-9. Vernon carried the better of the play and had the better scoring chances outplayed the Express for most of the period.

Top Players;  (Vernon)

Brett Corkey (2 assists) Played very well on the Vipers backend tonight.  Corkey with a few good rushes carried the puck well, making some smart plays through out the game.

Mason Blacklock who took home the Vipers player of the month award for January played well for the Vipers.  Blacklock who stood out in the first two periods wasnt as noticable in the third.  Really plays well with Andrew Tegeler, these two always seem to know where each other are.

Andrew Tegeler (2 assists)  Played well for Vernon tonight.  Had a few good chances seems to be getting better the last few weeks.

Jason Bird (1 goal)  Made his Vipers debut tonight vs his former team played well on the blueline.  Saw alot of icetime and looked pretty good in his debut.

Colton Sparrow (1 goal)  I thought played hard and rugged in the opening two periods but didnt stand out as much in the third.

Danny Todosychuk (31 saves) played very well between the pipes tonight.  Made some big saves early and especially during the 1st period keeping this a one goal game.  Todosychuk has played very well as of late as both Todosychuk and Austin Smith have given the Vipers a chance to win on any given night.

Game Thoughts:  (Vernon)

The Vipers returned home after a four game road trip where they went 2-2 but could have easily won the two games they lost to Victoria & Penticton.  Ever since being blown out 6-0 at home to Powell River back in early January the Vipers seem to be a bit of a different hockey club.  Ive really noticed more jump and energy from this young team and they seem to be playing with a little more passion and desire these last few weeks.  I thought the opening ten minutes was pretty quick with back and forth play and both ends before the Express carried the play in the second half.  Vernon gave up several good chances early and often but Danny Todosychuck kept his team in the game as Coquitlam could have easily been up two or three goals.  The Vipers still having troubles clearing the zone, made several turnovers through out tonight's game.  The Vipers responded well in the second and third periods as I thought were the better of the two teams in the final two periods.  The Vipers with the better scoring chances didnt give up as many opportunities and caught up in shots.  Give this team credit they went down 3-1 with just over seven minutes left in the third but didnt quit.  A quick goal by Colton Sparrow just two minutes later got them right back in the game before Marc Hetnik's game tying goal lead to Dexter Dancs game winner.  After so many losses and one goal games it was great to see this young team battle back and pull one out for themselves and for the fans.

Top Players:  (Coquitlam)

Bradley Ryan One of the bigger kids on the team played a strong defensive game for the Express.  Saw alot of icetime and was very solid on the backend.

Marc Biega also played very well on the Express blueline.

Justin Georgeson played fairly well, got a few good chances.  A quick skater that read the ice well and was involved in the play for most of the game.

Ben Isarel (2 goals)  Was the most dangerous player for Coquitlam.  This kid has a wicked shot and dangerous in and around the net.

Adam Rockwood (2 assists) Played well for the Express

Adam Rossignol (2 assists) Played very good, good hands and also reads the ice well.

Malcolm McKinney played well tonight, was involved in the play, getting a few good chances.

Zachary Pryzbek (1 goal)  Played well up front, had a few opportunities.

Cole Huggins (32 saves) Played very well between the pipes for Coquitlam.  I dont think you can blame him for the loss or any of the four Viper goals tonight.  Made some tough saves when called apon giving his team a chance to win.

Game Thoughts:  (Coquitlam)

I wasnt too sure what kind of game to expect tonight, especially when your watching two of the leagues bottom feeders go head to head.  In a game where you didnt expect it, I thought tonight's game was very entertaining and exciting.  Coquitlam played very well in the opening period but dropped off as the game went on.  The Express were outplayed for most of the 2nd and 3rd periods wont be happy blowing a 3-1 lead with just over seven minutes remaining.  Once the Express got the two goal lead I will admit and thought the game was over.  Vernon who has had troubles coming back down two goals let alone one goal pulled off their biggest comeback of the season.  Coquitlam has a few big kids who can really move the puck well, have a good powerplay and solid goaltending.  This team didnt look like a 5th place club.  The Express with now just one win in their last eight road games.
